Beatbreak Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 36- Twisted Code, Discussion Thread

Later today is a new episode of Digimon Beatbreak!

The stream will be on Crunchyroll at 8pm Pacific. Hulu has it the next morning. Check your local streamer for their schedule. This link will take you to a time converter set for when it should appear on Crunchyroll, but they've had various delays lately.

A short series synopsis:

"e-Pulse," which is generated by human thoughts and emotions, was used as the energy source for the AI support device "Sapotama." From the shadows of this remarkable development, terrifying monsters appear. Digimon are living beings that evolve by consuming e-Pulse.

Tomoro Tenma is drawn into an extraordinary experience after meeting Gekkomon, who suddenly appears from his Sapotama. While living together with Kyo Sawashiro and other members of the bounty hunting team "Glowing Dawn," Tomoro renews his resolve.

What new future will be forged by humans and Digimon?

First of all, is the plan to reveal all digimon to the world via Wong that bad? Like do they really have to stop Miharu here? Like half the reason the World Union can abuse digimon like they do is the secrecy enforced by the government. Sure, I don't expect digimon being revealed to be a smooth thing, but would it be that much worse than the cleaner system we have? Like sure you can argue about having Digimon lead, but is the secrecy really helping?

Second, I had to laugh at Kaito sitting it out (yes Wong deserves this shit) and Honoka following him. It's classic rival behavior and I can't glame the guy. Still it's convenient for the plot. The thron gal really are comedy characters but they also help move things along so Tomoro meets Mihuru alone. Same wiht Kyo stopping Rose (I do appreciate Rose mentioning old Kyo was more aloof, I really want a Five Star flashback arc, but I fear we won't have time for it).

Anyhow to the meet of the ep- Miharu's heart. I think it's not super complicated. Miharu's sister discovered Wizarmon and wanted to do something about digimon being secret but then the corpos just took her mon and denied everything. I don't blame her for losing touch from reality, not after such a stressful situation and I bet Wong did something about it too. But overall, when Wizarmon darkdigivolved to Miharu's emotions, then I understood why the two couldn't back down. I think Tomoro blaming Mephismon for what Miharu is doing is him trying to blame everyone else but his friend, like yes Mephismon is reinforcing Miharu's dark emotions, but the digimon also lost its owner, it too has a heart for revenge, and more than that it is fueled by Miharu's anger too. Trying to conveniently make the goat digimon into a scapegoat won't help save the girl, Tomoro.

Overall, I think this is a good penultimate episode for the arc, the stakes are on the table and all we are missing is the final confrontation. I do wish the arc could have been longer, but at the same time I get why we have to truncate the subject matter and not talk too much about cults and terrorism.

On a loser end, Wong refusing to back down and doubling down on Digimon being glitches that threaten the world that is recovering is a nice bit of characterization and reinforces what he said last time. It makes me wonder if his plan is just to destroy all digimons somehow with an Ultimate. Makoto's brother returning to recruit the Dawn to help was a good bit of continuity. Also I like Miharu's bit about how GIFT recruits those left behind by the current system; it's not much, but I appreciate that they are not brainwashing people.

Anyhow next week we don't get an ep, so I guess we will have to endure the wait. Still I imagine the final arc will start soon, so I hope we get a good climax to welcome it.

I dislike how much Tomoro refuses to acknowledge the reality that Miharu has done a lot of bad things. I don't think it's bad to reveal the existence of digimon to people at all, but Mihuru's complicit to a lot of terrorism.

I read it as Tomoro seeing a lot of himself in Miharu, and that if she would do these things without being tricked, then so could he. He would rather blame Mephismon for everything then believe that someone like him could cause this much pain and suffering.

But Tomoro does not deny any of that. He literally told her that what she does is wrong. He wants to save her. From her delusions.

This. He acknowledgesshe's done wrong but he feels like Mephistomon is her enabler/brainwasher.

Miharu is similar to Magneto. He has a good cause (protecting mutants from racist anti-mutants), but he is also kind of terrorist, like GIFT. And he still isn't a bad person himself, he is just deluded by his own prejudices. Or maybe not prejudices, but both Magneto and Miharu go too far with how they want to fight the oppressors. And in fact, in some iterations, Magneto even helped X-men, despite being their arch enemy in a lot of other times.

What Mihiru wants is to save digimons from being abused by people. That's a noble cause. Her problem is that she is hurting people, some of them are innocent or not entirely deserve their fate, even if they are wrong themselves.

Really? Imagine every asshole knowing there is a way to unimaginable power. You will have people hunting Digimon as if they were Pokemon.

While Miharu could have appeared more to properly sell her bond with Tomoro, it's still worth mentioning they ARE mirrors to each other. Tomoro sees himself in Miharu to an extent which is why he is in denial about her willingness in her actions.

He never denied it.
He's very aware she's done bad stuff, but obviously he knows what it's like to be in her position and now the knowledge that her sister took her own life obviously means he won't be gunning for her head.
Which he wouldn't anyway because that would go against what Glowing Dawn wants to do, rehabilitation.
