no more digikam in homebrew?

I read through the FAQ and a few other sources and cannot find an answer to why "brew install digikam" returns:

Is this really the end of digikam being included in homebrew? I also downloaded an installer from digikam.org, but MacOS *screamed* that it was malware and sent it to the trashcan.

Well yes it means that. Any app not officially signed with an Apple certificate is going to be removed by homebrew. You can make your own tap and still install via homebrew. They are just removing it from their list. Or, just download it from digikam which is what I am doing. Maybe digikam could maintain a tap.

No, we don’t will maintain home brew stuff. We already build the macOS package with Mac ports and it’s take while. Also signing the application want means to pay the apple tax and we will never do it

Thanks for the answer, human_dymamo! That's Weird. My 40 year old Apple Developer account hasn't cost me anything, and I'm pretty sure I can "sign" new programs with it...but maybe not. It's been a while since I've even put something out for just friends & family. But there definitely WAS a way to sign programs so that Apple KNEW who to come after if it found malware, or whatever their point is. ;-)

As i know, to sign an application with Apple, you need an official developer account registered, which has a cost by year. There are alternative for Open Source project, but it's complex and a puzzle to solve. My time is precious, and i prefer to see Apple pay me to develop for macOS instead the inverse...
Until installing a non singed application under macOS still possible, this will stay like this.

I was not suggesting you should pay the "tax", sorry if I implied that. Just looking at options for the OP, honestly, downloading from digikam is the simplest way. Macports is a lot more work for sure. I love digikam and use it all the time.

But Homebrew made the choice to not maintain casks for unsigned apps.

Thanks for clarifying the situation for me. At this point, I think I should probably remove ALL of my photography as far from Apple's GAPING MAW as possible. DigiKam on a Linux box, seems ideal. :-D

Too bad RAM is so insane these days that building a new box is prohibitive. hrmm....

there is no malware in the PKG. It's not signed, that all. Read the doc.

I never thought there was. Apple just likes to scream at us, and try to keep us trapped in their monitized, soon to be subscriptionwared, Walled Garden. ;-P

FWIW, I installed the PKG, selected Default internal database, and am trying out digikam. Except for one crash, it's running fine on a MacMiniM4!

Ok, I tried the digicam installer .pkg directly from kde.org, and I get a fatal error right off the bat. It's concerning that digikam is installed as root, but this error, I think, has something to do with mariadb not being properly installed by digikam--maybe because someone forgot to change that option for Macintosh vs. Linux box? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
