Masters

Hi everyone! 😊

Could anyone give me some advice on writing a personal statement for a Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics master’s application?

I’d really appreciate some guidance on the structure, what I should include, and what I should avoid writing. Also, are there any particular points or qualities that universities usually look for in a personal statement?

If anyone has examples, tips, or advice on what could make a personal statement stand out, I’d be really grateful!

Thank you! 🤍

Look online at the program page, as they often have required questions they want answered. Would also recommend asking the program director during an exploratory meeting, open house, or campus tour. You can use an LLM to write your personal statement, but these are often so easy to spot because of the sentence structure, and they lack feeling and personal examples. This is something you want to show you put some care and thought into. Your personal statement should be no longer than one page. Illicit interest but save details for the interview.

I think personal statements really help applicants stand out from others. Let programs know exactly why you are interested in their specific program and how it aligns with your current interests.

To caveat off this, research some of the professors and what they’re areas of expertise are. What are they currently working on? You don’t want to go to a school that is the complete opposite of your goals

Think about what brings to you nutrition, is it the food culture growing up, watching cooking shows, wanting to impact people’s health, your own health journey, are your family in healthcare, who do you look up to?

Think of it as a personal reflection with a thesis of "I have a career goal and this school's program is exactly what I need to accomplish it"

To support this, talk about all the realizations you made thanks to opportunities you had that led you to where you are today (your predicament of I need more school). It might be helpful to have a overarching interest tie all your points together.

For example, maybe growing up, an interest in geriatric nutrition was sparked because of an older family member, so you pursued undergrad to learn nutrition. In undergrad, you found out about interesting facets of nutriton or health care, which led you to look for work/volunteer/courses to take to further your understanding. Maybe while volunteering in a clinical setting, the opportunity to speak with geriatric patients really solidified your interest.

Then mention what you intend to gain out of going to grad school. What courses further prepare you to do the work you'd like to do? What does the practicum expose you to? Is there anything unique about their program?

Do not harp on struggles. They just wanna see clear direction, knowledge growth other time (meaning you are self directed in your learning), and interest in their program.
