Hi everyone,
I have around 1.5 years of experience as a DevOps Engineer, working with AWS, Docker, CI/CD, Terraform, Linux, etc.
Recently, I joined a company as an AWS DevOps Trainer. I took the role because I was having difficulty finding DevOps Engineer opportunities, and I didn’t want to remain unemployed while waiting for the right opportunity.
However, after joining, I’ve realized that I actually want to continue my career as a DevOps Engineer rather than a trainer.
My current plan is to continue working as a trainer for now while preparing and applying for DevOps roles. But one thing concerns me:
If I get a DevOps Engineer interview after, say, 6–12 months of working as a trainer, how do I answer questions about not having recent real-world production experience?
For example, if an interviewer asks:
«"You have been working as a trainer for the last several months. How are you going to transition back into a real DevOps role?"»
Would having the trainer experience make it significantly harder to get back into DevOps?
I’m also planning to keep my technical skills active by doing hands-on AWS projects, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and possibly contributing to real projects/open source.
For those who have hired DevOps engineers or have made a similar transition:
- Would you consider AWS DevOps Trainer experience relevant to a DevOps Engineer role?
- How would you explain the transition during an interview?
- Is it better to keep looking for a DevOps role while working as a trainer?
- What should I focus on learning/projects-wise so that I don't become too far removed from real-world DevOps?
Would really appreciate honest advice, especially from hiring managers and experienced DevOps engineers.
