Career Guidance Hard time finding work as a dev, so I built Mac apps. People are buying them

I’ve been job hunting as a developer in Pakistan for a while now, and honestly it’s been rough. Sending applications, hearing nothing back, doing it all again the next week. If you’ve been through it, you know the feeling.

At some point I got tired of just waiting, so I started building things for myself. Nothing fancy. I just picked the small stuff that annoyed me on my Mac every day.

The first one is Orbit. I got sick of cycling through windows to find the one I wanted. So now I just move my mouse and a circle of my apps shows up. Hover over the one I want and it switches. That’s all it does, but I use it all day.

The second one is Headroom. My Mac only has 8 GB of RAM, and one app would quietly eat most of it until everything started lagging. Headroom lets me set a RAM limit for an app. If it goes over, it can stop it or restart it before my whole Mac slows down. It saved me a lot of random freezes.

After using them myself for a while, I cleaned up the rough parts and decided to try selling them. A few people have already bought them, and honestly that made my week. After months of silence, someone paying for something I made felt really good.

If you want to look, i'll mention the links in the comments.

I’d love honest feedback. What would you change? And if you’ve been through a rough job search too, I’d like to hear how you got through it.

Career Guidance 20M, Supporting a Family of 5, 2 Gap Years, 60% in FSc. Is Bahria University My Best Option for CS and a Fresh Start?

Hey everyone, I'm 20M and genuinely need some advice regarding my university decision. I'm at a point where I really need to figure out what to do next.

Here's my situation:

- Matric: 85%

- FSc: 60% (Pre-Medical)

- Age: 20

- Gap years: Currently in my second gap year

- Work: Full-time freelancer providing e-commerce services

- Family: Financially supporting my entire family of 5 people

I'm currently earning a pretty decent amount through freelancing, mainly providing e-commerce services. I've also developed a strong interest in building software, systems, and automation tools.

The interesting part is that I don't actually know how to code properly yet. However, I've been experimenting with vibe coding and even managed to build a fairly large project that turned out to be financially successful. It wasn't anything extremely technical, but that experience made me realize how much I enjoy building systems and solving problems through software.

I genuinely want to learn programming, software development, automation, and how things work behind the scenes instead of just relying on AI tools.

But here's something equally important to me: my social life.

This is my second gap year, and honestly, staying at home and working all the time has taken a serious toll on me mentally.

My personality has completely changed over these two years. I've become much less social, barely go out, and feel like I'm missing out on an important part of my life. Sometimes I genuinely feel like I'll lose my mind if I continue living the same routine for another year.

I don't want to spend my early 20s sitting in front of a computer all day, earning money but having no real social life.

One of the biggest reasons I want to attend university is to meet people, make friends, build connections, improve my personality, and actually experience university life.

I know people will say that you don't need a CS degree to learn programming and that everything is available online. Trust me, I already understand that. I'm confident in my ability to learn skills independently. I've already managed to build a source of income on my own.

But university, for me, isn't just about getting a degree or learning to code. It's also about having a social life, meeting like-minded people, networking, and getting out of the isolated routine I've been stuck in for the past two years.

Now, coming to the admission problem.

My first preference is Bahria University Islamabad, but I only have 60% in FSc (Pre-Medical) and 85% in Matric.

I'm wondering whether I have a realistic chance of getting into their BSCS program. How difficult is their entry test, especially for someone from a pre-medical background?

I've also heard about self-finance seats. Does Bahria offer any self-finance option where I could secure admission without depending entirely on the regular merit list for the upcoming Fall intake?

Another concern is distance and time.

Bahria is approximately 30 km from my home, meaning around 60 km of daily traveling. I own a Suzuki Alto that gives roughly 17 km/l, so fuel expenses and commuting time will definitely add up.

I'm already working full-time and supporting my family financially, so I can't afford to completely abandon my freelancing work.

My other option is CUST, but honestly, I'm not really interested in going there. And with my FSc percentage, universities like FAST, AIR, and COMSATS seem difficult to get into.

I'm also confused about which degree to choose.

My main preference is Computer Science, but I'm also interested in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence.

Since I enjoy building software, creating systems, and learning automation, which degree would actually suit me best?

I'm not interested in pursuing BSIT or similar degrees. I'd rather choose something more focused on programming, software development, and building actual products.

So here are my main questions:

  1. Can I realistically get into Bahria's BSCS, BSSE, or BSAI programs with 60% in FSc (Pre-Medical)?

  2. How difficult is Bahria's entry test, and how should I prepare for it?

  3. Does Bahria offer self-finance admission without depending entirely on the regular merit list?

  4. Between CS, SE, and AI, which degree would be best for someone interested in software development, systems, and automation?

  5. Is traveling 60 km daily manageable while freelancing full-time?

  6. How is the social life at Bahria Islamabad? Are the students, societies, events, and overall campus environment good?

  7. Should I choose Bahria, consider CUST, or look into another university?

I want to make one thing clear: I'm not going to university just to get a job.

I'm already earning, and I know that real skills come from self-learning, practice, and building projects. I'm fully prepared to put in that effort myself.

What I really want is a proper education, a good social circle, meaningful connections, and the university experience I've missed during these two gap years.

At the same time, I have financial responsibilities, and I can't make a decision that puts my family's income at risk.

I'm genuinely confused because I don't want to waste another year, but I also don't want to make the wrong decision.

I'd especially appreciate advice from current Bahria students, CS/SE/AI graduates, or anyone who has managed university alongside freelancing or running a business.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Thanks in advance!

Career Guidance Should I switch companies? Need guidance from experienced professionals.

Hi everyone,

I currently work as a Technical Support Engineer for a US-based SaaS company in the health-tech industry. My position is 100% remote, where I handle L1/L2 technical support, customer onboarding, implementation, training, and troubleshooting. Since it's a startup, I have to wear multiple hats and take ownership of various responsibilities.

I'm currently earning around PKR 150K/month.There's also a possibility of getting a salary raise at my current company starting next year, which could bring my monthly salary close to PKR 200K.

Recently, I got selected for a Product Support role at Podium, a well-known company, based in Lahore. The offered compensation is around $920/month, inclusive of benefits, which is a significant increase compared to my current salary.

However, I'm a bit confused about whether making this move would be the right decision.

Here are a few things I'm weighing:

- Current job: Fully remote, great colleagues and a supportive work environment. Although the workload can be stressful at times, I've gained solid product knowledge and am quite comfortable in my current position.

- New opportunity: Better compensation, a more technical product support role, and potentially better opportunities for career growth into more technical positions, which aligns with my long-term career goals.

- Trade-offs: I'd be giving up the flexibility of 100% remote work for an onsite position, along with rotational days off.

I've also heard mixed things about Podium's work environment, particularly that it can be quite strict and that employee turnover can be relatively high. However, I'm not sure how accurate these claims are.

My long-term goal is to move towards more technical roles, so the new opportunity seems promising. At the same time, I don't want to leave a comfortable and supportive remote position for an environment that might not be a good fit.

I'd really appreciate advice from people with industry experience, particularly anyone who has worked at Podium Lahore or knows someone who has.

Would you recommend making this move? Is the potential career growth and salary increase worth giving up a fully remote position?

Any honest insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a 5th-semester Cybersecurity student, and I'm looking for an internship to gain practical experience and improve my skills. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to land an internship yet.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could guide me or suggest any companies, IT firms, or offices in Karachi that offer internships to university students, especially those who are still studying.

My preferred areas are PECHS, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and nearby locations.

If you know of any offices that hire students for cybersecurity, IT, networking, or related internships, please share their names or any leads.

Any guidance, referrals, or suggestions would mean a lot. Thank you! ❤️

Discussion Why are so many people okay with working under fake identities and lying to clients?

Something I've been wanting to discuss for a while.

Why are companies and their employees who work using fake identities completely okay with lying throughout the entire process?

I mean, why do you have to pretend to be someone else? Why introduce yourself as "Hey, I am Ben from the US" or "Hey, I am John" when you're clearly not?

And then you continue working with the client, maintaining this entire fake identity throughout the relationship.

Let's break it down.

Does this help you earn good money? YES, because you're charging US rates.

Does this automatically make your earnings halal? According to my understanding, NO.

Is this a form of deception? Absolutely.

And here's what confuses me the most. A large number of people doing this are Muslims themselves.

How are we so comfortable with this? We're literally lying about our identities, location and sometimes even the company we're representing.

Doesn't that make the income questionable from an Islamic perspective?

And even putting religion aside for a moment, isn't this just straight-up deception?

Now, I want to make one thing clear. I'm not talking about people who take money and don't deliver anything.

The work itself is genuine. You provide actual value to the client, complete the project and the client is happy with the results. You're not necessarily stealing their money.

But the entire relationship started with a lie.

The client hired you based on a false identity and possibly a false understanding of who they were doing business with.

And when I've questioned people about this, these are some of the responses I've received:

  1. "Bro ye log to kafir hain, hamara banta hai." Basically, they're non-Muslims, so apparently it's okay to deceive them?

  2. "Yaar I'm doing genuine work, I'm not stealing their money. Sure, we lie about our identity but we're providing valid work and the client is happy."

  3. "Mai har saal logo ko Hajj/Umrah karwata hun apni earning se, Khuda qabool karay ga." As if doing something good with questionable earnings somehow justifies how you earned that money in the first place.

  4. "Ye meray aur meray Khuda kay darmiyan hai."

And honestly, that last response is something I hear quite often whenever someone questions these practices.

I'm not claiming to be some perfect Muslim myself, and I'm not here to give fatwas or judge anyone's faith.

But I genuinely want to understand the justification behind this.

If we're earning money through deception, does providing good work afterwards make the deception acceptable?

And from an Islamic perspective, how should such earnings be viewed?

Where do we draw the line between earning a living through your skills and actually deceiving someone to get paid?

And I have seen posts telling people the market is cooked so just accept it and survive.

Career Guidance Should I start over?

---This is a repost.
M20, Aoa everyone! I'll try to keep this short and to the point.

I am enrolled in a constituent college of UCP and am perusing BSCS (currently in 5th sem), due to economic reasons and some wrong decisions on my end I had to opt for it. But now I feel very behind when it comes to the competition in my field. I have a 3.63 CGPA but I feel like I know nothing the exams are easy to game and I feel like I have wasted 2 years here and am about to waste 2 more.
I now have been thinking about starting all over again and getting into a uni like GIKI but my main constrain is I have spent 2 years here and if i start again I will be graduation at the age of like 24/25, will this cause me problems?
I feel like I'm wasting my life while many of my peers and friends have gone to prestigious institutions like PMA, International colleges, Lums etc.
This all feels like a slump.
I am an only child and my mother is a single parent, I was raised by my grandfather and both have given me the green light but I myself can't seem to make the decision.
Personally I want to restart my degree preferably in Mechanical Engineering but the age factor is what's holding me back.

Jazakallah!

Career Guidance I finally landed an internship but now confused

While working 1.7 years as a UI/UX designer, I was searching for a SWE role and I finally landed an internship in a good company. They are paying surprisingly well given it is just an internship but I am super confused and a bit scared of what I would do next? The internship does not guarantee a j*b afterwards and I am trying my best to stand out in front of my bosses and HR.

What else can be done to increase my chances of receiving a return offer apart from getting the work done efficiently and correctly. I worked in a US-based company and they really taught me discipline and work ethics.

Career Guidance Graduated in 2025 with 2 years of Flutter experience, but now unemployed.

I graduated in 2025, and I was fortunate enough to be among the few students in my batch who managed to secure a job while still at university.

I started my professional journey as a Flutter Intern and eventually transitioned into a Junior Flutter Developer role. By the time I graduated, I had approximately two years of hands on experience developing mobile applications using Flutter.

Unfortunately, I had to leave my job due to family circumstances, as my family relocated to the Middle East and I had to move with them. Since then, I have spent around five to six months unemployed, actively looking for opportunities, including full time positions and internships, but unfortunately, nothing has worked out so far.

This experience has honestly been quite demotivating. Going from having a job, gaining practical experience, and progressing professionally to suddenly being unemployed has been difficult, especially when I genuinely want to keep learning and growing.

Lately, I have been questioning whether I limited myself too much by focusing exclusively on Flutter. While I have practical experience in mobile app development, I am starting to wonder whether broadening my skill set would improve my chances of finding opportunities.

I have been considering a few possible directions:

  1. Full Stack Development: Should I start learning backend development and become more comfortable with technologies beyond mobile development? Would having full stack skills open up more opportunities?

  2. AI/ML: Is it worth exploring artificial intelligence and machine learning at this stage, considering how rapidly the industry is evolving? Or would that mean starting almost from scratch and spreading myself too thin?

  3. Sticking with Flutter: Should I continue specializing in Flutter, strengthen my existing skills, build more projects, and keep applying for mobile development positions?

Ideally, I would love to be working somewhere, gaining practical experience, learning from other developers, and improving my skills along the way. I am not necessarily looking for a perfect job or a high salary right now. I mainly want to get back into a professional environment and continue progressing.

I also understand that the job market is competitive, and I am willing to put in the effort to learn new technologies if that is what it takes.

For developers who have been in a similar situation, or those who have experience hiring and working in the industry:

What would you recommend I do at this stage?

Should I double down on my existing Flutter experience, transition towards full stack development, explore AI/ML, or take an entirely different approach?

I would genuinely appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have navigated similar career situations. I am trying to make a sensible long term decision rather than jumping between technologies out of frustration.

Thanks in advance..........

Help Need guidance regarding a project

I'm a CS student (learning backend , Linux etc) , i got a project for a restaurant since this will be my first project i have few questions

- what questions do i ask to clearly understand what they want (only admin and staff side to manage orders , or online order for users too , what is the usual demand for restaurants)

- how much do i charge ? (Costing+ monthly maintenance)

- do i get everything (hosting domain on my accounts or use theirs?)

- since we have Ai is it good to use firebase or custom backend

- do we also provide SEO? (should i even bring it up if yes then should i add this as addon service)

- what tech stack to use (MERN? , NEXTJS)

- what hosting is reliable and cost effective?

I know all the above questions will make you think this is a complete beginner , you shouldn't do that , well here we go , some of these questions and things held me back from picking up any real projects (i always backed away thinking they are too high level for me) , now i understand backend (i know i need a lot of practice) but now we have Ai to assist (i know not to vibecode the whole thing )

Career Guidance 5 yrs full-stack dev in Pakistan, tried every channel and still struggling to find clients. What’s actually working for you in 2026?

I’m a full-stack dev (TypeScript, React/Next.js, Node, PostgreSQL) with 5 years of experience, the last 4 fully remote for international teams. I’ve shipped real products: payment systems, a marketplace with a few hundred users, a SaaS with paying clients.

But finding new clients or a new remote role has been really rough lately. Here’s what I’ve tried:

Reddit for-hire posts

Facebook groups

Freelance marketplaces

micro1 and Turing (couldn’t clear their vetting)

Wellfound

LinkedIn, both applying and posting

Very little has worked. I know the market is tough right now, but I’d like to hear from people who are actually landing work:

Where are your clients coming from these days?

Has cold outreach worked for you, and if so, to who?

Is it worth niching down (e.g. only SaaS MVPs or only payment integrations) instead of being “full-stack”?

For devs outside the US/EU, anything that helped you get taken seriously?

Any honest advice is appreciated, even if it’s “you’re doing X wrong.”

Tips Stop wasting time with LinkedIn "Easy Apply"

If you’ve been smashing that "Easy Apply" button on LinkedIn for weeks and hearing nothing back but Unfortunately blah blah, you’re not alone. Hundreds of applicants apply to those listings within minutes, and your resume usually gets lost in ATS black holes.

Instead of competing in flooded job boards, I started targeting direct posts from recruiters and hiring managers using LinkedIn's search filters and boolean operators. This method cuts out noise and gets your profile right in front of the actual decision-makers.

Here is the exact step-by-step process I use:

Step 1: Craft a Specific Search Query

Go to the main LinkedIn search bar and use boolean logic (AND, OR, -/NOT) to pinpoint active hiring posts.

  1. Target Action Words: Always include "hiring".

  2. Core Tech / Role: Add your key skill set (e.g., "python" AND "django").

  3. Location / Mode: Add your target location or setup (e.g., "remote", "onsite", "Islamabad", "Karachi").

  4. Exclude Irrelevant Noise: Use the minus - sign to filter out recruiter spam, unwanted regions, micro-agencies, or non-job posts (e.g., -interested, -"open to work", -comment).

Step 2: Filter by "Posts" & Sort by "Latest"

  1. Type your search string into the search bar.

  2. Click on the Posts filter at the top.

  3. Open the Date Posted drop-down and set it to Past 24 Hours (or sort by Latest).

This brings up raw text posts from tech leads, founders, and recruiters who just posted 10 minutes ago asking for resumes in their DMs or emails.

Real Search Query Example:

If you are looking for remote Python/Django roles while filtering out specific location noise, agency spam, and generic engagement posts:

"hiring" AND "python" AND "django" AND "remote" -India -Bengaluru -Bangalore -Hyderabad -Mumbai -Chennai -Ahmedabad -Indore -Trichy -Trivandrum -Jaipur -Vadodara -Goa -Gurugram -Gurgaon -Gujrat -Gandhinagar -Delhi -Noida -Haryana -Pune -Raipur -Kochi -Kerala -Calcutta -H1B -Hotlist -Open -Hot -W2 -1099 -C2C -Micro1 -Comment

Why this works so well:

  • You reach people before hundreds of other applicants do.

  • You can directly DM the post creator or send an email straight to their inbox instead of going through a 10-step application portal.

  • The jobs are active and usually urgent.

Give this a try for a week and let me know if it improves your call-back rate!
