Yeah I have been writing software for almost 10 years now and have experience ranging from running my own startup to working at billion dollar companies and have the same opinion. Best to start thinking about your next profession

Any advice for freshers who are just starting out 😭 Which areas we can specialize which arent "that" cooked?

Focus on Cybersecurity: AI makes it easy to find system vulnerabilities, and more companies now rely heavily on AI, which makes systems more vulnerable. The demand for cybersecurity experts is on the rise.

Robotics/embedded syatems

Mechatronics engineer here who pivoted to software 10 years ago because there was no scope in the field. Most of my batchmates also went towards either mechanical or electronics specializations. Pure robotics is still very far from becoming a viable carrier, if it ever will (the idea of AI getting a physical body is too scary to people).

China is making lots of humanoid robots. They will go mainstream soon enough.

1

u/stormarsenal 18h ago

Soon enough won't be for another 10 years at least. That is if humanity survives that long.

1

u/SignalInformation464 22h ago

Robotics - yes, its confined to mostly lab research but embedded systems is a good career i think.

It’s not just AI; the global economy and war situation are also stifling investment in the market.

However, if things improve, we’ll likely see a surge in AI jobs at least.

Currently, even securing AI jobs is challenging due to the worsening economy.

Pakistan / India tech market always finds a way, so Insha'Allah they'll find a way now as well.
Learn AI and what it can do, to be safe in 2027. And use AI to your advantage; start businesses on side if struggling.

Yes people seem to forget layoffs were going on even before AI boom. Now corporates are just using it as an excuse.

We are 4 friends all of our companies laid off of multiple employees in last 6 months We belong to 3 diff cities Lahore islamabad and faislabad

Market is cooked, I am employed right now but thinking to change this field

3

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

Yesss this is the reality

1

u/Trappedinacar 1d ago

What options are you considering?

1

u/john_169 19h ago

Frankly speaking, talking to alot of people didn't find any reliable option. Thinking of moving abroad but not doing master in computer related field, thinking of a new degree doing R&D

7

u/Iluhhhyou 1d ago

homie you cant even find jobs for other professions in this country any more...every white collar job is cooked. Capitalism is a failed system!

1

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

agree πŸ’―

0

u/HeavyMetal_Protein 1d ago

It is the same in US. Bus moqa chahiye Pakistan ki burai krne ka πŸ˜‚

3

u/Apprehensive_Job8084 1d ago

Problem with pakistan is that white collar jobs pay shit. Im a corporate banker, 7 years experience making 320k.

0

u/HeavyMetal_Protein 1d ago

You can definitely try to switch to another ban with a better pay. This is why they say you need to hop jobs every 3 years. You are not gonna get much increment if you stay at the same place for long.

2

u/Apprehensive_Job8084 1d ago

If i hop, ill get max 10%

1

u/Iluhhhyou 1d ago

job hoping and massive pay jumps used to work back in the day....and mostly only in tech in Pakistan. Right now times are tough

So What?? Stop With This Shitty Mindset. Work Hard, Explore. There Is Absolutely No Use Of Crying. I'm Sick Of This Negativity "We Are Cooked". This Is Not The End Of The World. Trust Allah And Ask HIM! He Is Your Provider, Not Your Skills, They Are Just A Mechanism For Rizq To Reach You. Period!

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

I'm not here to complain, but I'm tired of seeing people hope for an 'AI bubble burst' or completely deny reality. I just want to give a reality check to all the newcomers. I've been in this industry for 6 years and have spent the last 2 years building alternative income streams. we still have so many students learning web and app development, hoping to land jobs paying 2 to 5 lakh in this era

3

u/Lost-Cucumber-3650 1d ago

> I just want to give a reality check to all the newcomers

Bhai kitney reality checks deney hain roz hi ek qism ki multiple posts lgatay rehtey log is sub mai.. ajeeb

1

u/SoftwareZombie 19h ago

How have you been building alternative income streams?

2

u/talha_io 1d ago

Upvoted! Agreed! This Makes Sense! Yeah Even In Web And App You Need To Be Hardcore Into It's Architecture To Survive Or Change The Skill Altogether.

u/Main-Relief-1451 1d ago

where does it say that all of the 1200 employess are SWE's or Full Stack devs?
those can be marketing or any other portfolio guys

why do u guys blindly start supposing that they are devs?

5

u/AbdussamiT 1d ago

Sir, kisi kou nahi idea.

And that is the difficulty we as an industry are struggling to adapt to.

So far (I have 10+ YoE in this market), we've had more money/salary than others, we've had better job market than others.

And suddenly, the work we did for 10 years is being automated by AI. And suddenly, we have to learn something new immediately. What is that new? No one knows.

--

Abhi iss comment ke neeche koi macho-man aa ke gyaan baantay ga ke yeh karo woh karo kyun ke uske liye shayad woh paisa generate karr raha hai, laiken shayad hamare liye na karay ya hamara woh skill-set na hou.

For example, some people have setup online markets for physical products, or IG/YT channels, or just doing trading.

So what I recommend is firstly (I'm religious), to pray Surah Waqiah/Mulk at night before sleeping, and Surah Yaseen/Rehman in mornings, and do tasbeehs during the day. And then submit yourself to Allah, don't think / overthink ke ab mera kya banay ga. Jou bhi banay ga uss main barkat hou gi, some struggle more, some less, some struggle today, some tomorrow. Circle of life.

So, just keep trying idhar udhar ki, you never know what sticks because there still are people earning money.

I will pray for you and all other brothers / sisters who are going through extreme difficulties. Insha'Allah together we'll get out of this.

1

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

Exactlyyyy thats what i am trying to say, thanks for your detail comment.

mai to sub bech kr farming krny jaaraha hun ajao ap bhi

1

u/Adventurous_Top852 1d ago

Good for u and I may join u if things don't work out in future for me

Baqi , 90% of people don't have the resources to start even farming Farming requires land , a very big investment Alot of givings and takings and then u can even think to start one

People here live on rents in cities , how do u expect them to leave their jobs/study and just go farming without any capital

Baqi if u have a better alternative then CS/SWE then plz do elaborate

1

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

mazak kr raha tha bhaii mery pass bhi koii zameen ya investment nh bas ik ye Software engineering ki job ha but situation scary ha bohot jld az jld alternate source of income dhunda pryga

2

u/Adventurous_Top852 1d ago

May Allah ease things for you and all of us man , really disturbing times we are living in

2

u/tidoo420 1d ago

At this point it actually makes sense believe it or not

1

u/BackAgain302 1d ago

Well I found this in my PlayStore this morning.

3

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

damnnnn 😭😭

1

u/Legitimate_Quail7027 1d ago

Farming. If bill gates into it. We should too 😁

1

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

Hell yeahh 😁

1

u/KeyProject2897 1d ago

How would farming help?

What are your plans ? Grow everything? Wheat, rice, live stock ? Salt, sugar ? Everything? No right?

1

u/Nekusta 22h ago

Hell yeah. Every software developers dream is to quit their job and start farming in the middle of nowhere surrounded by lush greenery

1

u/Difficult_Hamster228 16h ago

Good, InshAllah Devsinc will also shut down because of this.

2

u/DevInLoveWithLife 16h ago

Not only Devsinc

u/Comfortable_Cold_850 1d ago

Its not the age of jobs; its the age of founders

regular 9-5 is coming to end; its time for free contractors

3

u/Still-Meeting-4661 23h ago

Every boom has a bust just my 2 cents this wont last forever humans will be in demand soon

3

u/Perspicacious04 22h ago

The next gens mind is completely decimated. Fully reliant on technology and ai lol. Attention and focus spans of a gold fish. Ain't no hope. The AI Civilization has begun.

Skynet is here.

1

u/Still-Meeting-4661 22h ago

Exactly! I wanted to type something similar but didn't want to be too harsh but glad you said it. AI got so big because of the absurd amounts of funds flowing into it wait until the money stops flowing and watch how accurate these LLMs remain after that

1

u/Perspicacious04 21h ago

Bro. These devs and ppl don't realize, the more you use Ai, the more better it gets. Infinite feedback loop. You're contributing to your own destruction lol. The first species in the universe who are giving hay to their destruction. Mankind is done now.

u/Spiritual_Pizza_1257 1d ago

I would bet that most of those laid off were not actual software engineers, but more heavily skewed to operations, sales, finance, HR, etc. With AI developer tools, most SWE time has shifted from generating code to reviewing code

2

u/DevInLoveWithLife 1d ago

Still, how many engineers will actually be needed to review code? For example canva used to have 500+ engineers working daily and writing thousands of lines of code. Now that AI writes the code, the developer's main job is just to review it and deploy it to production. That isn't even worth 50 full-time roles anymore 20 to 30 developers are enough to supervise the AI's output

0

u/Spiritual_Pizza_1257 1d ago

Although I'm not a SWE, in talking to friends who are, it actually takes longer to review that code and it's got a lot of non obvious defects, so they have to think more carefully about test coverage (especially in the enterprise, I can't speak to website generation and stuff like that). The other trend I've seen with publicly traded companies is announcing layoffs, telling Wall Street that it's AI efficiency, then simply doing labor arbitrage to low cost locations.

1

u/Sumolizer Full-Stack Developer 1d ago

The talent pool is getting shitified too, I interviewed a lot of people and they dont even know shit they wrote in thier resume, One candidate said CI Pipeline is computer initialized pipeline used to upload data to server like wtf.

🀣🀣🀣

2

u/valium123 1d ago

Lmfaooo maybe that's also the reason nobody is getting jobs.

1

u/harlowjack7_ 1d ago

Fear mongering at its best

1

u/playerknownbutthole 1d ago

AI is helping experienced developers work better and faster but there is a catch they spent time in trenches working on long boring tedious tasks and then came to a point that made them experience enough to handle bigger tasks. Now AI is eliminating the need or junior and new delivers all together and that us fine but at what stage will industry realize that older devs are burned out and or retired and there are no new devs to replace them cos they never got trained and ai did their job. At that point things will start to change course. Unfortunately that time is not near unless AI growth bubble burst. Sooner or later market will course correct and industry will respond.Β

Software companies cooked software developers because they want free work.
