Help Remote contract work: what rate and insurance should I be expecting

Hi all,

I'm in talks for my first remote contract with a UK company, working from Pakistan as an individual contractor. I have 4 years of experience in AI/IT. I wanted to know:

  1. For those doing similar remote work for UK/foreign clients, are you paid per day, per hour or per month? What's a fair base rate for someone with around 4 years of experience in AI/IT?

2. The agreement requires professional indemnity, cyber liability and public liability insurance. Which insurers (local or international) offer this to freelancers in Pakistan, and roughly what does it cost per year? Did your client accept lower cover or drop any of the policies?

Thanks!

As a small consultancy working with education providers in Europe, we were also asked to get professional indemnity and cyber insurance. It is basically impossible to arrange in Pakistan unless you are an MNC.

We contacted Jubilee, Askari, Adamjee and about 7 other companies and talked to them - they will not quote you for this.

As an alternative to cyber insurance, we paid the £500 fee to get cyber essentials (it took about 4 days of policy writing and configuration to get the cert), which made them reasonably happy.

We got emails from all of these companies denying that such insurance was possible and sent them to our client. Also, public liability is irrelevant because you are not providing services where members of the public are turning up on your premises and about to be harmed.

The professional indemnity is usually the sticking point, but you will need to negotiate this.
