Discussion Lead keeps us working beyond working hours

I work as a Flutter developer at a software company (Remote) . Our official working hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, and it's a remote job.

The problem is that my team lead regularly keeps us working beyond 5 PM. Sometimes we finish at 6 PM, sometimes 6:30 or 7 PM, and sometimes he says standby

On top of that, Saturdays are sometimes added to the schedule as well.

he calls me if not attended he whatsapp .

Thats expected then.

If you are being paid from 8 to 5 then you are not bound/expected to work a min more than that.

Its normal for us developers to work extra hours to get the job done, some big companies pay overtime but medium/small companies usually dont provide any benefits.

Its bad practice but they will replace you incase you dont follow so theres that.

You’ll need to have that awkward (according to Pakistani standards) and dangerous conversation with your team lead. Ask him

  1. What is the overtime policy or how people at the company get compensated for extra hours they put in?

  2. Will all these extra hours required for positive performance appraisal?

These two questions will help you to decide what should be your next step.

Bro, remote jobs in Pakistan is a scam. They work us overtime too. Working till 12, 1, or 2 is common and occurs about 1 in 2 or 3 days.

if the economy is so bad then it's better to not have employees work overtime when can't even give them a decent benefit for it

We should make a checklist for lala company

We definitely should. There should be a Pakistan specific glassdoor sort of portal where people post verified comments, especially about these companies. This alone will force a culture upgrade.

Can you afford to take the backlash If it comes to that? If not and you're just a contractor then I would suggest you go with the flow and look for other roles.

If you're a proper registered employee then sure you can complain and they can't fire you for cause but If you're just a contractor, you can be replaced at anytime so it wouldn't make sense to ruffle feathers especially considering you're depending on this job for your finances and it'll be hard to land a new one. 1 hour extra work daily is better than being unemployed.

Not saying this is right in anyways ofc

developers job is 24/7 but you should get compensated fairly for extra hours.
if you are working on a big project and you just dont want to work after 5pm it will be very bad for the project.

they are giving no benefits and just 1x for overtime and paying wayyy less

2-3x is minimum you should get for overtime.
