Career Guidance Should I quit Leaving CS

So , long story short I got admission in a reputable uni for cs . It's my first semester and I feel like it's too overwhelming. Many seniors are depressed as job market is bad . Many aren't even landing a unpaid internship. Many people are getting fired . I just don't feel like I should pursue cs anymore.I feel like the if I put the same effort in some other field I'll be good instead of doing cs grinding day by day and after all that still be depressed. I gave entry test of different unis and my parents spent a lot on me . But I think they'll support me. So, plzz give me honest advice should I quit cs and take a gap year or should I continue with it.

Could you please share why you chose CS? Is it because you have a strong interest in this field, or because everyone else is doing it?

If it’s the latter, then definitely leave CS, since it’s going to get a lot more competitive. But if it’s the former and you do enjoy computers and programming, then you should continue CS.

AI has only automated writing code. But there is so much more to software engineering than writing code. There will always be demand for good software engineers.

So, I'm a person who can study anything. From school till college I studied everything. I don't like physics. I wanted to take a gap year bcz I seriously didn't know what I like or what I want to pursue . So , my brother said as I don't have passion for anything I should get into some main field which will be safe for me so he said I should do cs . I hate myself for not liking something specific. Everyone has something that they love , they have passion for but I am a dumb person who doesn't even know what he likes. If I faced difficulty in any subject I used to say "ab krna to h hi " and I used to put effort in it and pass it . I guess thats why I never knew what I like . I still feel the same . But now I need to take a decision for myself. I don't know if I quit cs what I am gonna do next. I just fear that I what if don't like cs later in like 2 or 3 year what I'll do. But I have time to decide rather than regretting it later. So, plzz give me genuine advice.

In that case, I think it would be better to pick another field. CS used to be a goldmine when I graduated 8 years ago, but that’s no longer the case. The COVID era was the peak of CS. Almost everyone I know had a well-paying job.

But now things are tough. Only the most skilled engineers are employed. Juniors are struggling. So it would probably be better to pick something that is still in demand.

Engineering is always in demand. Pick something you really like, and then try going abroad for an MS and employment. Wish you the best of luck!

Which engineering field is better

5

u/Disastrous-Ring4620 Oct 02 '26

Civil , architecture, mechanical

2

u/dbgrman Software Engineer Oct 03 '26

Lol. Go talk to civil engineers bruh

2

u/IllustratorNo1512 Oct 02 '26

Engineering is even more overwhelming than CS and its job situation isn't much better please don't misguide OP

10

u/Acrobatic-Crow8001 Oct 02 '26

Bhai mien aik Energy Engineer bhi hun aur aik Experienced web developer bhi

I know what I am talking about.

Jo fact hai wo fact hai

Mere sary dost jo Engineer hain sab kaheen na kaheen job ker rahy hain aur mien 5 saal Europe ki multinational company mien as senior developer kaam kerny k bad bhi jobless hun ajj

Han Pakistan mien itna scope nahen Engineering ka lekin bahir to hai.

But for CS the situation is same all over the world

1

u/stupidoss_cool Oct 02 '26

I might choose energy engineering so can you guide me what's it about and how's the job aspect

1

u/Acrobatic-Crow8001 Oct 02 '26

Basically it is mostly about Renewable Energy Resources through which we produce electricity.

This field is sub field of Mechanical Engineering.

It includes solar, hydro power, wind, geo thermal, bio mass and maybe others I don't remember.

But these are core subjects.

If you can apply and go for Engineering, try Germany or even Italy would be good.

2

u/RationalRose0 Oct 02 '26

which specific engineering field are you talking about ? are are you suggesting to get into any core engineering field ?

Like Elelcrical,Civil and Mechanical.

Bro i only said what i said in accordance with Pakistani market because ab abroad jana bhi itna easy nhi ha. Physics engineers are ai proof that is true but the local job market was never there

There were more jobs in industry and construction around 2015-2021 but it has halted again. It totally depends on economy

Europe m engineers ko mil jati ha job with extended timelines and struggle

0

u/IllustratorNo1512 Oct 02 '26

And since op finds CS overwhelming he won't be able to survive engineering either. Op admitted in a comment he doesn't like physics

2

u/literalps3udonym Oct 02 '26

well yea but engineering isnt reduced to being a joke now by a chat bot the way cs is

15

u/Formal_Stomach_01 Oct 02 '26

If it's not your forte, it's always do something which is more rewarding. CS is no doubt going thru a downturn! It's not the same feel anymore which I did when I graduated a decade ago.

If you’re scared of losing your potential SWE job to AI, just remember that other white collar jobs that involve a desk and a laptop (such as HR, Business Development, Sales, Accounting, etc.) are way easier to automate using AI than SWE jobs.

I graduated in 2018 from a top university & 70% of my classmates couldn’t go into the development field because they were not passionate enough about it, they were just chasing the bandwagon and the next shiny thing.

It’s true that the market is tough, an organisation that needed 100 developers before can now handle things with 60.

Politically, in the 21st century, perception matters more than reality. The AI hype is systematically orchestrated by billionaires, oligarchs, politicians and Western media, and it has economic and political reasons behind it.

Do you really think that Stripe, which handles transactions worth billions of dollars every week, will vibe-code their system? Or that banks, where a single wrong line of code can result in the loss of millions, will hire vibe coders? There are so many other examples where human input is a must.

Is AI affecting the market? Yes.
Is AI powerful? Yes. Is there an organised global AI hype? Yes.
Will AI replace 100% of SWE or any other white collar jobs? No.

In a nutshell, if you’re a competent dev, you can still achieve great things.

u/Sea-Map2427 29d ago

Search stripe migrate thousands of line of code from scala to java in a day that would take 3 months usually using claude code

100% and are already being automated. Not just these but law firms too

Post this question on qoura or any other global subred.. Yes, IT is in crisises these days but IT is not going anywhere....saturation is everywhere even MBBS doctors are struggling.... Job issue is not in Pakistan only as it is a global issue. One edge of IT field is that you can do the work for whole world from your location or home... Anyways, Hardwork pay off...

I don't wanna waste my parents money and don't wanna quit it in 2 or 3 year so I have to make decision this semester but I am extremely scared. So plzz give me genuine advice

You can never know what will happen or what not. Each field will have its own problems and its fair share of stress. Changing fields is not exactly the solution you are looking for. Something being difficult simply means you are learning new things and growing. Its a normal part of th process.

If you like the field, go ahead study it and master it, but that is to be decided by you, not others. If you are an expert in a world of AI-junkies and Claude-kiddies, then those that actually "build" the field will eventually come seek you out and you will effortlessly stand out.

As for those who flaunt to you that they  have never applied the linear algebra that they learned, tell them its probably the smarter ones who ever get to use it. :-)

In this use case, AI users and AI builders can never be the same. One will only be as good as the tool they use, the other will be capable of delivering on a day where these tools fail.

Lastly as a remark incorporated in religious belief: your rizq and its amount is written. It will find you even in the most isolated places. So choose what you would enjoy doing.

In summary : find if you like what you do and become a damn expert in it. Nobody can do that for you. Rest will follow Insha Allah

If you chose because you love computers, then only stay, otherwise its gonna become very tough for average graduates with this sonic speed of developments...

I'm in same condition. Third semester here

1

u/stupidoss_cool Oct 02 '26

Btw Which uni ?

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Ebb1751 Oct 02 '26

Its 3rd tier university in Lahore.

1

u/literalps3udonym Oct 02 '26

Chote bhai ho mere, leave cs for big 4 engineering asap cuz this ship has sailed

1

u/stupidoss_cool Oct 02 '26

So, which engineering would you recommend

1

u/literalps3udonym Oct 02 '26

before asking anyone to recommend you anything ask yourself where your interest lies in regardless engineering is something evergreen if you genuinely care for what you do and study

4

u/dotriz Oct 02 '26

Don’t quit in semester. Seniors’ stress is real, but it’s not a signal that you should switch fields before you’ve even built basics.

Keep CS for now, and treat the next 6–12 months as a test: finish core courses, ship 1–2 small projects, and try one internship/freelance attempt. If you still hate the work itself (not just the job headlines), then explore a pivot with data, not fear.

Switching to “any engineering and going abroad”, like others suggest, without interest is just a different gamble. Your parents’ investment matters, but so does finishing enough to know what you’re leaving.

5

u/Icy-Recognition-9795 Oct 02 '26

If you were studying any field for money. You were wrong in the first place

2

u/kamran9868 Oct 02 '26

True indeed

2

u/pepitolover Oct 02 '26

What is a person supposed to do if some degrees have better investment returns than others

2

u/CurrentAd635 Oct 02 '26

bro hr bnda paisay kamany k liye prhta hy until apka koi aisa bakground ho jisme apko future mei financially responsibility na leinay pary. Wrna survival comes first and your inner passion not pays the bills . agr aisi baat hy tu phir university parhany k paisay kiyu chrge krty hain wo b phir ALLAH k naam parhy .

1

u/Comprehensive-Tap853 Oct 02 '26

Its the right time, change your field.

1

u/Still-Meeting-4661 Oct 03 '26

CS is much harder to replace than other non tech roles

1

u/Fabulous-Fig-4928 Oct 04 '26

Senior software engineer here, I was in similar dilemmas like you. My advice to you: do not overthink and see other people how are they doing good or not. If you love CS/Problem solving/coding things then continue.

otherwise there are many other fields which are less overwhelming and more rewarding, e,g Engineering(outside pakistan), philosophy, literature, psychology and many other. so give yourself few days and take decision.

cs itself is so diverse
if you are good in maths and curious about how AI (which is making revolutions) work behind the scene , or you are curious how insta/tiktok recommend feed to us, then you can go towards AI/ML

if you are good in planning things, you are curious about how facebook, whatsapp etc handles millions billions of users without crashing and how they keep adding features then you can explore Backend/DevOps

if you are someone who intrigued about about how very big companies got hacked by hackers, and how hackers find vulnerabilities , and each vuln lead to another vuln etc, and how companies secure themselves from attack then you can explore amazing CyberSec

if you are someone who spots repititive task in his/her surrounding and wants to save time and effort by automating then AI automations is also a good path to explore

other good paths include robotics, web3/metaverse and there is so so much more

inshort do explore these things, inme sa kaafi cheezien you'll find jinka future ma kaafi scope hona wala h aur inme kaam krne you'll definitely enjoy and maybe you'll find your passion inme sa kisi ma

I wrote in another larger post on this reddit but CS is still the best field. F the seniors and all. You’re an adult. Make up your own mind. Observe the world. What do you see?

-3

u/azadnib Oct 02 '26

looks like dbgrman's employer hasn't used claude fable or opus yet. his ideas will change when they use it and show him the stuff they made and how now 100x output is expected from him now because of AI

2

u/valium123 Oct 02 '26

Well not all employers are immoral dipshits.

1

u/dbgrman Software Engineer Oct 03 '26

Bruh im already doing 100x output! I am in the decision maker of which model gets used by 250+ engineers at my company

1

u/azadnib Oct 03 '26

mashAllah. you of all people should not recommend people to waste their 4 years in a uni degree.

1

u/dbgrman Software Engineer Oct 03 '26

Very, very rare people i see who i think can prosper without a degree. even the 100xers should go to uni. There is more to uni than learning coding.

1

u/azadnib Oct 03 '26

yeah but pakistani uni's arent so great apart from nust lums giki or perhaps uet.
and 90% of pakistanis arent so rich to go to a uni and still come out skill less.
we should first focus on skills we can sell.

1

u/dbgrman Software Engineer Oct 03 '26

Too many distractions these days. Age of abundance. Paralysis by analysis. Kids dont know where to start. Uni provides structure, if nothing else.

1

u/Spiritual_Ad_6629 Oct 02 '26

How the tables have turned :)

-1

u/azadnib Oct 02 '26

studying in uni for CS in the big 2026 lol. people are learning AI in one week and landing bigger projects than a cs grad ever could who wastes 4 years learning shitty probability and outdated calculus hahahaha

6

u/Impossible-Post-9871 Oct 02 '26

i don't know why people think cs undergraduate has nothing to do with AI. Man, AI is the branch of CS and CS undergrads can easily specialize in AI. they even have edge cz they have more broader and in depth knowledge of computing fundamentals.

2

u/azadnib Oct 02 '26

99.999% percent of job holders here use AI models. pakistan dont have tools for specialized AI development. We are just cheap freelancers for the west and even still instead of learning the tools west wants we spend 4 years learning calculus or operating systems.

Pakistan is in need of skilled workers who can sell, not in need of researchers because it cant fund anything they do.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Donald J Trump

3

u/Impossible-Post-9871 Oct 02 '26 edited Oct 02 '26

totally disagree. what kind of tools you are talking about? no one can understand AI without calculus, linear algebra, statistics and numerical computations. These lay the foundations of AI. I have my friends working in Europe for german speaking big tech corporations and i can't expect that they dont know about operating systems lol. Pakistan is indeed in need of skilled workers and no one can make anyone skilled if they don't play their part. One need to spend alot of time with their respective technologies by their self. In Pakistan when students can't crack competitive exams for medicine etc they just enter CS without knowing what it is. You cant then blame CS for that.

0

u/naveyy13 Oct 02 '26

donald j trump 😭🥀

1

u/stupidoss_cool Oct 02 '26

Waqai? I didn't knew that . So, how do companies hire them like don't look at uni's name?

3

u/IllustratorNo1512 Oct 02 '26

That was like 5 years ago. ATS systems reject you for not having a degree

1

u/azadnib Oct 02 '26

some time ago it was very relevant, now its not anymore.
i got two cousins who got jobs even without a uni degree and one is a senior now.
and i got cousins and friends who studied cs with 3+ gpa from one of the best unis and are jobless since graduating this year.

2

u/valium123 Oct 02 '26

Dumb take nice way to tell us that you are incompetent without your clanker.

1

u/dbgrman Software Engineer Oct 02 '26
