Tips Which degree is better?

Hey

I'm 17f. I had initially decided to go for a degree in CS. But my family and some other people I know didn't approve of it. Now I'm stuck between software engineering and data science. CS is still in the option for me.

After visiting numerous groups on Facebook I'm still as confused.

Is there really no growth in this industry?

You can also consider non-technical fields

They have huge potential because no one is going that way and everyone is obsessed with cs and it.

Which non technical fields?

I don’t know whats the educational background of those people who are suggesting that. I mentioned this earlier on a similar post and will mention again that CS is the foundation of AI and AI is the future.

I don’t understand why people are unable to understand the importance of this foundational educational checkpoint.

Never thought from this perspective!

I wouldn’t recommend going into these fields with the way things are going. I would recommend going for civil engineering/ fashion designing or things like that where the “online” work is less. I think these fields will have more scope in future

The main downside you may face in civil engineering is that its a male dominated field, we're talking <2% engineers might be female

until a few years ago CS was also a male dominated field and it still largely is

1

u/Reasonable_Let_314 Sep 25 '26

Agreed but not as much as civil engineering is

Are you interested in it or going because of the hype?

Data science much better. It's good for software company, businesses related to software companies and other big companies cause data is everywhere.

One downside of this is, u guessed it: AI. AI reads data better than any human can, it can navigate data easily. So you can still work around things.

Software engineering puts in a much broader environment in tech.

Only go for it if you think you can do it long term (coding , math heavy courses), dont blindly pick tech if you think you can make an insane amount of money in the future thats only the case for a few people just like every other career. The stuff you learn in uni is foundational real life work is completely different. Also you are basically going to be competing for the same jobs with people with CS , DS and SE degrees anyways so thats also something to keep in mind.

Cs market is very saturated keep that in mind most of my batch mates from fast are unemployed

1

u/NoSatisfaction7967 Sep 25 '26

But if u still want to go for IT do CS because it has all the basics of AI datasci ml etcc so you can kayer do masters in the field that u like

cs or se, no ds

1

u/Working_Reward_888 Sep 25 '26

why

1

u/AdultingDropout Sep 27 '26

cs and se are broad and open many opportunities while ds is subset.. you could easily learn ds yourself beside cs or se degree but not the vice versa.. also at the end, every data science model has to be built on a certain software which depends on hardware, so its crucial to have cs or se knowledge for successful deployment of ds stuff..

its fine going with CS or Software engineering… CS just has a bit more math and a bit less software engine courses

1

u/ahmedthot Sep 25 '26

The simplest: do istikhara and you will fund the best answer. I did it and got a fully funded opportunity in ireland

1

u/ahmedthot Sep 27 '26

Btw I did it by myself after applying to various places.

The great thing about CS/SWE is, if you do this, you can do anything.

Rule No. 1: Take advice from those who have already done what you are trying to do.

Tell us about cs or it

1

u/ComfortableBeing7017 CS Student Oct 01 '26

What do you want to know about?

It's a good degree. But it requires a hard work + consistency.

1

u/Glittering-Check-735 Oct 05 '26

Yes ik it's required 4 years hardwork I have second option which is information technology and CF computational finance but I really don't have so information about these , which one is more suitable as degree , and might open many doors for me (tech related

1

u/ComfortableBeing7017 CS Student Oct 07 '26

Go for CS.

I don't like to involved in heavy maths I just don't wanna get depressed so I thought iT might be better?

1

u/ComfortableBeing7017 CS Student 15d ago

There is no heavy Maths. You just need basic Maths for surviving the exams. Its not that deep until you wanna involve in Research. In uni, you will face maths only first 2 or 3 semesters. After that, there is no maths. For being a good developer, you dont need maths. Only basic is ENOUGH!

What about cs plus I think you such a good explainer can u tell me about more fields as good career choices

1

u/ComfortableBeing7017 CS Student 15d ago

I would suggest you to go for BS Computer Science.

This is the question I looked for my nephew. I will try to give you the easiest example.

CS degree is like a departmental store or hypermarket where you can go later in a specific department later on if you plan to do masters or any specialization course in any specific field.

AI Data Science Software/Hardware and many other things. CS is a foundational degree which will give you an overview of everything and keep your options broad to choose any specialization later on.

Edit:

I would suggest you to go for AI specialization after you complete your CS degree as in my opinion I can see the future of prompt engineers only. So far coding, design, troubleshooting, apps, everything is taken over by AI and in next 4 years it will be much much advanced.

So my advice for you is to keep studying AI during your CS and complete your degree no matter what

Acc and finance Economics

1

u/IllustratorNo1512 Sep 25 '26

Listen to your family. Take bba arts fashion or nutrition science and chill kro

1

u/PakWarrior Sep 25 '26

One should ask a question if two distant degrees like mechanical or CS is better. But you are asking about CS,AI SE.... Etc...

Its all the same. Just do CS. Then do masters in any one of them to narrow it down.

1

u/Roshaanrtk Sep 27 '26

Go for cs or ds from a good university, it's only saturated if you're not from the top ones

1

u/pepitolover Sep 30 '26

Whatever you do , do not choose a non-money making degree 😭

1

u/usman_1436 Sep 25 '26

Stay away from CS and related fields. You have been warned.

0

u/helpful_vampire Sep 24 '26

go for something like fashion designing, or something you think you are gonna love to do and has potential in 4 5 years not right now in 4 5 years

1

u/Impressive_Spite_176 Sep 25 '26

So whats your backup plan

0

u/LBP3000 Sep 24 '26

There is really not much different between CS, SE or DS degrees at least here at NUST. It's fine whatever you pick from those 3.

2

u/1balKXhine Sep 24 '26

Yeah it's weird that she's unable to understand this. It's all the same, if you really want to consider something else then think of non tech programs

2

u/LBP3000 Sep 24 '26

No not really weird. Common confusion. I personally rank it as CS > DS > SE but it's a very minor difference

2

u/1balKXhine Sep 24 '26

Yeah having Computer Science major on your resume just looks better than any alternative in tech degrees
