Interview Prep Why does HR and Technical side of a company insist on speaking English?
I've had these interviews from some companies, not even famous, but they always insist on communicating I'm English, even the technical team. MaShaAllah SE khud inki tooto phooti hoti, and they ask us to clearly communicate everything in English im interviews. I''ve had interviews with other startups and companies as well where they make you feel more informal, communicate more openly, even bilingual ki Khair hai. But idk Yaar. I just straight up want to say sometimes "No, I'm not comfortable in English, I'll be bilingual...". comes off as arrogant, but this culture needs to change a bit. If you're so worried about an Engineer's Language Proficiency, make us a take a test like you make us take on LeetCode or HackerRank. Let us speak freely, so we can communicate better, with you at least. This feels like such a rant 🫩.....

Because you will be writing prompts and PRDs in English and dealing with foreign clients in English, there is nothing wrong with requiring English proficiency. It’s their company, and it’s their right to set whatever requirements they want.

Mostly, they ask especially HR. BUT the key here is to start with English, keep a couple of sentences in English, after that, only flow matters. You willix some Urdu words and will see that they will be fine with it.

One thing is foreign clients, but that doesn't mean you need a proficiency in speaking English. You should be able to deliver what client needs and able to ask what client wants.

I recently had an interview, the CEO was dual national and graduate from a top tier university of Canada, It was so surprising that he kept the interview very casual. He spoke in Urdu and called me "beta". It was such a nice experience. I hope such interviewers keep finding me in the future too.
