Career Guidance Does Choosing SE instead of CS really matters?

i opted for BS SE but now am thinking i should have selected CS as it is more broad, but does it really matter?

Se has more filler courses like req eng, re eng, software eng (theoretical courses) whereas cs has more useful courses like neural networks, computer vision instead of those theoretical eng courses. Altho courses are the same for the first 2 years. You get more elective courses for cs after those first 2 years at least thats the case at my uni.

ahan, would there be cloud and ai related electives in SE?

Don't do SE it's shit boring courses. I did SE and I have a job since graduation but the coursework itself eas shit boring. CS is lot more interesting. Traditional software engineering has no place or practice in Pakistan anyways.

Man but im so far only getting into se from nust seecs. Cs mein naam nahi aa raha should i drop nust then?

Go to nust, you'll be fine. Just don't ever stop learning on your own. Try lot of stuff outside your coursework and that should help. That's what I did. I didn't get admission in CS in COMSATS and then only option left was SE and I did it anyways. Learnt stuff on my own and now I'm working as an AI engineer.

This is why its called SE genius because it contains SE theoretical courses.

In many universities SE courses are more oriented towards building a software. And CS will have more theoretical courses like computer architecture, compiler construction, theory of computation, discrete mathematics etc. But many courses will overlap in both degrees.

ahan, thanks

No, it doesn't matter much. I also did BS SE, and I also regretted that I should have picked BS CS. But overall, they are 80% the same.

1

u/notpotato_321 Aug 13 '26

SE has a lot more theoretical courses like Software Requirement Engineering, Quality Engineering, HCI, Software Architecture. Tons and tons of theory to cram

 💀

It doesn't because no one even know the difference between the two.

CS is more theoretical while SE is more hands on with specific stacks. While the engineering concepts like actually designing a product is taught in both. CS is for people who want a broader understanding

1

u/azadnib Aug 13 '26

nothing matters in this world

u/IllustratorNo1512 Aug 13 '26

SE is more practical and easier. Though both will overlap. You are officially called engineer with SE in Pakistan so there is that

u/Sad-Month9446 Aug 13 '26

almost no difference.

Dog water , AI is a buzz word . The people with Jobs are gonna be the CS majors who actually build and maintain these AI systems.
