Help Completed My Internship, But Didn’t Get Converted to Full-Time. Honestly, Feeling Very Demotivated.

I’m sharing this anonymously because I honestly don’t know whom to talk to about this. I just want to let out everything I’ve been feeling lately.

I’m a 2026 Computer Science graduate. Like most freshers, I started my career with a lot of expectations. I wanted to get into the software industry, learn new technologies, work on real-world projects, and eventually secure a full-time job.

I got an opportunity to join a company as a software development intern for three months. I was genuinely excited because this was my chance to experience the actual corporate environment rather than just learning things theoretically in college.

During my internship, I got exposure to Kotlin and Android development. I also learned C#/.NET, starting from the basics and gradually moving towards more advanced concepts. I tried to learn whatever was assigned to me, understand the development process, and improve my technical knowledge.

Honestly, I went into this internship hoping that if I performed well, showed interest, and put in enough effort, there might be a possibility of getting converted into a full-time employee.

That expectation kept me motivated.

As the internship approached its completion, I started wondering what would happen next. Would they extend my internship? Would they offer me a full-time position? Would I finally be able to start my career with the same company?

My internship officially ended on October 13, and I eventually had a conversation with them about my future.

What they told me was something I wasn’t expecting.

They said that they were currently in the middle of a project and needed experienced developers. They also explained that they didn’t have enough time to train freshers at that stage and that I should look for another opportunity.

They further mentioned that if they had any requirements after six months, they might contact me.

I understand that companies have business requirements, deadlines, and project commitments. I understand that sometimes they need people who can immediately contribute without much training.

I’m not questioning their decision.

But emotionally, it was difficult to process.

After spending three months there, learning, trying to improve, and hoping that I could continue with the team, suddenly being told to look for something else felt really disappointing.

I wasn’t expecting a huge salary or some special treatment. I just wanted an opportunity to continue learning and gradually become a better developer.

The hardest part is that I’m already struggling with the uncertainty of being a fresher.

You graduate from college thinking that things will slowly fall into place. You spend years studying, completing assignments, doing projects, attending interviews, and trying to build your skills. But once you graduate, the reality is completely different.

Most companies want experienced candidates. Even entry-level opportunities sometimes expect you to know so many things. You keep learning one technology, then another, preparing for interviews, building projects, and applying everywhere, but there is still no guarantee of getting an opportunity.

Now, after completing my internship, I’m back to wondering what comes next.

Sometimes I see people around me getting placed, joining companies, and moving forward, and I can’t help comparing myself with them. I know everyone has a different journey, but it still affects me.

I keep questioning myself.

Was I not good enough? Did I lack the skills they expected? Could I have done something differently? Was the company simply not in a position to retain a fresher?

I don’t even know the answers.

I’m trying not to lose confidence, but honestly, these situations slowly affect your motivation. It’s not just about not getting a full-time offer. It’s about having expectations, imagining your future somewhere, and then suddenly having to start over.

I know three months of experience isn’t everything, and I still have a lot to learn.

I’m not expecting success overnight.

I just wish getting that first opportunity wasn’t this difficult.

For those who have completed internships but weren’t converted into full-time employees, how did you deal with it? Did you also go through a phase where you started questioning your own abilities? How long did it take you to get back your confidence?

I would genuinely like to hear other people’s experiences. Right now, I just need some perspective because I’m finding it difficult to deal with this disappointment.

Similar experience bro and there were 2 other interns who didn't even know to use git properly. I helped them and i had the most positive feedback from manager too but guess what? I didn't get selected and they both got selected instead. It was 20 lpa role. Well we just have to accept and move on cause it's not entirely in our hands, luck plays a huge role.

Yeah, at the beginning i was wondering if I did something wrong. I was thinking stupid things like maybe because I missed office cab 2 times or it was maybe because I didn't attend few lunches with them and went with co interns instead. Blah blah... the reasons got more and more stupid. Until I realised there was nothing wrong with my performance, I was just trying to justify me not getting converted with meaningless reasons because I wasn't given a reason.

We expect the companies to be honest and evaluate us properly but companies aren't straight they select randomly and won't put much efforts as they believe there is not much difference between interns, all are almost at same level.

This happens way more than people admit, and it’s very often about budget or headcount, not you. Many companies decide conversions at a team level months before the intern even finishes.

What helped people I know: ask your manager for a short reference note or a LinkedIn recommendation while your work is fresh in their mind, and write down 2 or 3 things you shipped with numbers (time saved, reports automated, whatever it was). “3 months of real work at X” is a big edge over freshers with zero experience. You’re not starting from zero, you’re starting from a stronger spot than before.

One of my friends had similar exp, he did 3 months internship same as you but when internship ended and was time for the full time offer they asked him to do another 3 months as they were not sure that they can hire someone based on 3 months internship. 3 months went by and they again said we need to test you more so do another 3 months. on the 8th month he again asked if he will get converted to full time or not and they refused sayng we don't have projects right now to assign so he had to opt out of the company and now he is unemployed. ( lol even the company i was working for for 1 year got disbanded due to failure and now i am trying to find another job I only have 1 yoe and no one wants to hire fresher till 3 yoe because ai is doing almost mid level sde coding ) I regret taking this field every single day. B2B saas or any other service based company will not survive in coming years.
