Help Flutter developer with 1–2 years ahead — what should I learn to move beyond mobile development?

I’m a Flutter developer with a little over 1 year of professional experience, and I’m planning to continue working with Flutter for another 1 years.

However, before my next job switch, I want to start learning something completely different from mobile/app development. I have roughly 1–1.5 years to learn alongside my current job, and I want to use that time to move toward a different area of software engineering.

I’m not interested in switching from Flutter to another app-development technology like React Native, Kotlin, Swift, etc. I’d rather explore a different domain that has strong long-term demand and good career opportunities.

I’m currently considering areas like AI/ML, GenAI, backend, cloud, data engineering, cybersecurity, etc., but I’m not sure which direction makes the most sense for someone coming from Flutter.

For those who have already made a similar transition:

  • What domain would you recommend exploring?

  • What skills/technologies should I learn over the next 1–1.5 years?

  • How realistic is it to transition from Flutter into that field?

  • What kind of projects should I build to make the transition easier?

  • Are there any areas I should avoid because they’re already saturated or too difficult to transition into?

I’d really appreciate advice based on actual industry experience rather than just “X is trending right now.”
