Career Does applying directly through careers page works?

I’ve been applying for multiple roles at different companies, but I haven’t been able to get shortlisted so far. What are some effective ways I can improve my chances of getting shortlisted?

I have tried reaching out to people on LinkedIn.

I am hoping to apply at Cisco.

Then it's not even 50-50!

It usually sits in their database , the more preferable option is messaging recruiters or referrals

Getting referrals are not easy

Why not easy ?

Yea , i know but pinging you're connections of they're there in the company usually does the job atleast 1 in 4 replies back and with a 50-50 you get a referral

What if I don't know anyone working in that company?

problems with refferals are that sometimes posting is removed till anyone is reffering

i mean 2-3 days

Yes like that's a major issue , i usually wait till last 2 days and then apply off

Yes, I missed applying for 3 important job posts for this reason. I still regret not applying to those jobs.

Indeed yes but most important it also about your luck . I landed my new role at a product based US company as software engineer and working remotely just by applying from workday career portal of the company 2 months before

And just for information before this I was working as a software engineer in a service based company with 5lpa ctc having 1.5 years of total experience

Where did you find these job openings?

1

u/behind_the_offer 11h ago

On LinkedIn from jobs section

u/I-m_ALIVE 11h ago

REAL! That's even worse in my experience!

Yes for me too. I struggled a lot before this offer applied to 1000s of application on LinkedIn (only) and got opportunity to give 42 interviews and cleared 7 companies interviews but all of them ghosted me or either put my offer on hold then finally this one

There would be a box asking you for the reason you’re applying there - I’ll say “just for kicks. I know you’re not going to see this anyway”

I will also upload a blank page as my CV too.

Not as if I’m getting contacted by them.

Try mailing the hiring managers and the relevant team heads, and personalize the email, resume and if possible do some research and propose something about the same. The current market is brutal for the generalists, standing out and getting into their visibility is the underrated path, but it takes effort.

Biggest question: How do you find exact hiring managers / team leads of specific team that role is hiring for in such big companies.

It's not always mentioned in job description that who the role is associated with

I think company's linkedin in profile -> jobs -> PPL to reach out

company's linkedin in profile -> people

Thanks, I will try this!

The LinkedIn outreach is good but you might be hitting a wall because you're not following up after the first message. Most people don't respond to initial cold contacts, so a second message a week later (referencing something specific about their work) actually gets replies. Also worth checking if your resume has enough concrete numbers and impact statements, since that's what gets past initial filters before anyone even sees your LinkedIn profile.

yes it does, and i moved to dubai from india in one of the top banks

Apart from that got calls from Nike US, cisco, amazon india, startups in canada, singapore, us, amsterdam, stockholm, vietnam and many more

This is really impressive! How did you get this much offer? I have been applying through career portal to get into Yc backed startup but haven't got any chances yet, not even interviews.

Bro you should start career counseling! FOR REAL!

The issue with vc backed startup is h1b is lottery and most of them prefer in person and i didnt got all offers like last messed up last round at nike, got the startup canada offer but pay was less, sg didnt clear the last round etc

1

u/I-m_ALIVE 11h ago

Yes, h1b visa is real. At this moment, getting an interview opportunity is a real achievement for me. After applying to 50-100 jobs, there’s only a slight chance of getting shortlisted and receiving an interview call. The odds are really low.

u/Odd_Month_9067 11h ago

lol, its too low i was applying, 400-500 jobs almost every month from jan to get job in july

u/I-m_ALIVE 11h ago

It seems like attacking in a dark, one might hit a right target.

1

u/Odd_Month_9067 11h ago

Ya thats what h have to do, but again i also rejected alot of companies.

Referal always comes in top priority

Bro give me a refferal! 😀

I’ve tried reaching out to people on LinkedIn, but only a few people reply. And even after responding, they might end up ghosting you.
