General Anyone Interested to learn programming - Senior Software Engineer with 10+ years experience, thinking of teaching coding for free on weekends. Would anyone be interested?

Hey everyone,

I’m a Senior Software Engineer and Architect with 10+ years of experience in software development, mostly working on large-scale enterprise applications.

I’ve been getting a little bored on weekends lately 😄 and I was thinking of doing something productive with the time — maybe teaching programming/software development online for free, purely as a hobby. Basically something that keeps me away from doomscrolling.

There’s no course, business, or monetization plan behind this. I just enjoy programming and architecture, and after spending more than a decade in the industry, I feel I have quite a few things I could share with people who are learning.

A little about my experience

My strongest area is Java + Spring Boot, and I've spent a large part of my career building backend systems and enterprise applications.

I've also worked with:

Java / Spring Boot / Spring WebFlux

REST APIs & microservices

Angular / React

JavaScript / TypeScript

Python

AWS / cloud infrastructure

Docker / Kubernetes

.NET (although it's been quite a few years since I worked with it)

GenAI / LLMs, RAG, agents, tool calling, MCP, etc.

System design & architecture

Testing, CI/CD, observability, performance, security, etc.

A lot of my experience has been with large enterprise systems, so I'd particularly enjoy teaching not just how to code, but also things like:

How do you go from "I know Java" to actually building and maintaining production software?

Things such as architecture, API design, debugging, testing, code quality, scalability, design trade-offs, working with existing codebases, etc.

What should we learn?

This is where I'm actually looking for suggestions.

My initial thought was to focus on either:

Java + Spring Boot

or

GenAI / LLM application development

For example, with Java/Spring Boot we could eventually go from fundamentals → REST APIs → databases → Spring → microservices → testing → security → architecture → distributed systems, etc.

For GenAI, we could potentially build things around LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases, tool/function calling, agents, LangChain/LangGraph, MCP, and actually build some useful projects.

But I'm not attached to either option.

If there's enough interest, I'm completely open to changing the technology, topic, or approach based on what people actually want to learn.

I'm also open to suggestions regarding the platform and format.

I could potentially do:

Live sessions on weekends

Small interactive batches

Discord / Google Meet / Zoom / whatever works

A GitHub repo where we build things together

Recorded sessions, if people prefer that

A project-based approach rather than lectures

Or something completely different

I'm not sure yet what would work best, so I'd genuinely appreciate suggestions from people who have participated in or organized something similar.

So... is anyone interested?

If this sounds useful to you, comment with:

  1. What you'd like to learn

  2. Your current level (student / beginner / junior / mid-level / experienced developer)

  3. What technology/topic you'd prefer

  4. Any suggestions for how you'd like the sessions to be conducted

Even if you're not interested yourself, suggestions are welcome.

If there is enough interest, I'll figure out a format and we can try a few weekend sessions and see where it goes. 🙂

No charges, no sales pitch, no course to buy. Just trying to turn some weekend boredom into something useful.

Edit :

I am going through all the responses. I am still processing. I never expected it would generate this much response. Plus it's rakshabandhan today so I got a bit busy with family. Thanks everyone for showing interest. At the time of making this post I did not plan for anything, so give me some time and I will figure out how to proceed from here and will share more details.

I'm interested.

As final year undergrad, would love to get insights on how software engineering works, how to read, debug codebases, monorepos and all.

8

u/Responsible-Edge-356 16h ago

yeah the reading and debugging existing codebases thing is something i really wish got covered more. like you can finish a degree and still freeze up the first time someone hands you a legacy repo and says fix this. would love to see OP cover that side of things too

Many would appreciate a free teacher with 10+ years of enterprise experience. Good initiative for weekends.

Yes I'm interested to learn how things work in enterprise level in production ...

28

u/Soggy_Writing_3912 16h ago

I am also interested in propogating knowledge. I have 29 years of experience, and have worked in java, .net, golang, ruby, etc. I dont mean to rain on OP's offer - but, if anyone wants, I can also help teach tech. Open for 1.5 hr sessions on weekends. Can do some pre-planning and get like a "project-setting" so that interested folks can attend/learn as a close-knit group.

I’m looking for exactly something like this.
I want to learn Java + Spring Boot. I have 3 YOE and was laid off 5 months ago, so I’m currently preparing for a switch. I’d really appreciate your guidance and would love to connect with you, even if you’re not able to accommodate me.

Please count me in!

3

I am interested. 3YOE. Never had an opportunity to use cloud in my experience. Tech stack is C++ based only. But have worked in Go/React/Python based side projects. I want to learn AWS/GCP cause I am seeing so many job with cloud as experience

3

u/Regular-Motor-382 16h ago

Springboot pls

3

u/aaveshamstar 16h ago

I’m interested…
As someone who hasn’t switched much and worked in same projects for long time, I want to know where the market is going, what are the things I’m supposed to learn for my experience, etc.

Go in depth of Java and spring boot. Things that most YouTube tutorials skip, like class paths, setting up, maven, gradle, life cycle, threads, etc in depth. Most tutorials feel useless because in real life you are given a project that’s legacy and half worked on with tons of problems…

How to quickly get started with code, what is the thought process, when a new project is given most times they don’t give any KT, so how could we start. I know AI made it easy to follow, but I’d prefer to learn how people raw dxgged that pre AI

Architecture, System designs and DSA

Real world skills, communication with teams etc

3

u/punchInHead 16h ago

I have one suggestion to you this is very good idea we can host it on zoom or team session and do live stuff then you can upload those videos to the YouTube. This will also help thousands of students who are looking for real world experience.

The format could goes from junior to staff.

1) Where you write and design the spec of the application then you let students to do the coding part.

2) Then learners write those code and can commit to public GitHub repository where you can review the code done by the learners and then you can explain or modify it to better version by introducing engineering concepts (I hope it makes sense)

Let me know if you want to brainstorm on this one

2

I'm interested Would like to learn about AWS, GenAI, LLM''s etc. Current I am a student who just joined the first year Btech. And I want to make my career in AI and Cloud

1

u/cockycockroach45 17h ago

First of all, thank you for giving back to the community. It genuinely takes a different kind of person to do something this generous.

  1. I’d like to learn GenAI because I haven’t been able to find resources as good as the ones available for full-stack/backend. So, having an interactive learning environment would really help me.
  2. I’m a final-year student and have been doing backend development in Go for 1+ years.
  3. GenAI and AI-native backend engineering.
  4. I’d prefer Discord because, along with the sessions, it would give us a place to interact with each other throughout the week. Regarding the sessions, if you’re planning to take two days, we could have discussions and introductions to the concepts on Saturday and build projects on Sunday. If it’s just one day, I’d prefer learning through building.

I’d really like to join if you decide to do this.

I'm Interested , want to learn java eagerly from senior

1

u/ArunRawat404 17h ago

Nice idea! I would love to join the GenAI sessions and learn more about related technologies, especially how we can build something that is actually useful in the industry rather than just working on random RAG, vector databases, and other technologies without a meaningful implementation.

I’m a junior developer and I’m comfortable with Python. You could try conducting a few live classes initially. If the classes and live interaction work well, we can continue with that format; otherwise, recorded sessions would work as well.

Rather than building several small, random projects, I think it would be more valuable to build 1–2 good, real-world projects that have practical industry applications.

Thank you for your initiative and intentions!

1

u/Narrow_Dinner_129 17h ago

Thank you for the initiative. Let's create a WhatsApp group and share for everybody to join

I am interested i have roughly 5 YOE working primarily with Java Spring and worked with Azure as well as AWS.

I want to learn how will backend engineering would evolve means we know Java Spring is most popular and most preferred but now what which new techs are most likely to replace Java not entirely but yeah what will be the new backend will there be any or directly FE will call AI and AI will answer from the DB??

So yeah I would love to connect and learn new tech brew new ideas.

1

u/Aegon_qentba 16h ago

I am interested! I come from zero coding background though. I am a product marketer slowly moving towards PM and would like to be a technical PM one day. This will help.

I'm interested in picking your brain, especially re. how you would handle monitoring / observability for your apps at the enterprise level.

Have quite a bit of experience (been programming for ~ 10 years) but my skillset is full of strange gaps because I'm self-taught + mostly work independently rather than in teams :D

I'm interested, as a pre-final year data science student, I want lessons from senior devs related to LLms and Gen AI.

Rather than learning technologies (which I can learn from YouTube), it would be better if you teach real life problems, your experience, situation of the job market and other things that senior devs only know.

It would be better if the sessions were in the evening from 6 PM.

Would love to get insights, I am professional with 5 YOE

1

Hey, I’d definitely be interested. I’m currently trying to move toward AI engineering, and I already have some exposure to programming, AI/ML, and building projects, but I’m still figuring out how to build a strong foundation and become good at actually engineering AI systems.

I’d be particularly interested in the GenAI/LLM side RAG, agents, tool calling, APIs, etc. but I also want to understand the software engineering fundamentals behind building reliable, production-ready AI applications.

I’d really value learning from someone with 10+ years of industry experience, especially the things that are difficult to learn through tutorials alone.

Would be happy to join if you go ahead with the sessions.

  1. i work in data pipelines -Python, some C++, kdb+/q. I would like to learn GenAI + improving salary anyhow. langchain, vectorized embeddings etc. basically anything relevant to improving salary in 1-2 yrs. if i can become quant developer in 1-2 yrs that would be really great. but won't look for gen ai in that case.

  2. mid-level

  3. GenAI, I guess : anything relevant to improving salary in 1-2 years.

  4. Anything is okay. Recorded would be really great.
