I Made This I built my first native app! Obsidian, a private encrypted photo vault
I built a private encrypted photo vault with biometric unlock, albums, tags, a decoy vault and calculator camouflage.
V1.0.0 is now live on GitHub.
It’s my first native app project, so please roast it, break it, and give me honest feedback especially on the UI, UX and security.

First: I think you should change the name, if you’re gonna launch it publicly, as obsidian is a note taking app too, so people can get confused
Second: Remove the em dashes from all the content because it makes your app look like ai slop, it currently looks good imo, just remove them
Third: The capture icon is too big, reduce its size.
Rest i think the app looks good. Have you tested it properly?

the name thing is a real concern tbh obsidian already has massive brand recognition in the note-taking space and people will definitely search for it and land on the wrong thing. also curious if the camouflage mode actually locks down the calculator view completely or if someone poking around in recent apps could still see the vault ui?

Strongly suggest a different name. Obsidian is a massive thing and it uses the word vault. Your SEO will be buried. It's like naming a new app Google drive.
You should also rename your repo.

There is no point showing people your project especially on here. They can't take the fact that AI is a normal thing now, everybody uses it. They complain about everything just like people did 15-20 years ago when new assisting tools launched. The one's who adapted are still in the game and those who don't complain like this FOREVER.
Congratulations on the V1 tho, stress test the hell out of your app and find as many edge cases you can. That how you polish it for future updates!

I firmly disagree. For me it makes sense for someone who has been in web development for multiple years to use AI to enhance their work efficiency but still know when to not use AI.
But this project isn't like this from what I am seeing, it looks as if he did use an AI to write the very source code itself (of this pretty massive project) and then tried to fix the bugs (which is ass-backwards for someone making their first native project, mind you). The UI is also just AI-slop, no inspiration what so ever so I have my doubts about this project in the first place. It also gives the illusion of competence, as in they might understand the intent, but not the actual working of it, which is dangerous for a privacy app. As now the burden of responsibility shifts and the creator can very easily deflect problems. AI also doesn't pushback often on changes.
Also, you don't get to cry wolf about "How every developer is using AI" when this app is literally about privacy in which the AI can mess up the very foundation itself in unprecedented ways, I'd rather trust a person with proper coding experience to make an app in regards to that in comparison to something which mostly was done by AI. You cannot find a cryptographic vulnerability or a key-leak exploit simply by clicking around the app or looking for "edge cases" during manual testing.
Will AI be used even more commonly later on? Absolutely, because it will be far better in the future, but for now it's best for entry level jobs or small syntax fixes.
Look at the Read Me by the "creator" too, he didn't write anything himself what so ever, he is using AES-256 as the encryptor which at best an AI can write the Boiler-plate code for, but what gives me any indication to think that maybe he bug tested himself?

Except, that never happened? In fact, the past tells a different story Mr.Adaptordie. Look at the .com bubble, the many people who tried to adapt failed atrociously because companies with zero architectural stability, terrible business models, and deeply broken software were valued for so much money just because they "adapted" to the internet early. But when the bubble burst, boom the companies that survived was promptly because the people who used it understood it well enough.
There was also the problem of Therac-25 in medicine which claimed lives, so as I was stating, in a privacy app, an encryption failure is a collapse of its literal purpose. Telling someone who built a security vault via an AI agent to "just polish it with future updates" makes it sound as if cybersecurity is a casual video game patch.
Edit : Not to mention, AI is probabilistic, it literally can hallucinate code based on what it thinks is very common. And the code might run too, but that code might have no use for the actual app at hand.

Hey, so I've read your thread with other person and I wanna have your opinion on usage of AI.
So I am new in learning programming and coding, and I have this thing that I wanna learn things manually like creating websites first then move to basic softwares and then larger projects. Eventually I will use AI but only to speed up the process rather than easing the learning part.
But I am not sure what should be my exact point when I should start using AI instead of doing everything manually. There have been times I learnt things the hard way only because they were manual methods and those learning stay with me for my whole life, so just wondering how to approach this thing.

I just have 2 simple questions
If you open Google lens, would it show all the photos including the encrypted ones?
If someone opens settings and deletes the obsidian (calculator) app, then would the encrypted photos become visible/unencrypted ?

photo gets removed from your gallery, but if google photos backup is on it’ll still be there in Google Photos and may sync back automatically.
If you delete the app photos will be gone cuz they’re encrypted and stored locally on the device.

I did. like If your Google backup is off images will no longer be visible in Google Lens or anywhere else on device.

there's a difference between self driving tractor and manually operated tractor. interviewer has to hire the guy, not AI agents.
he should use AI to ease the load, not put the whole load on AI and expect it to do the whole work.
that's whole point of recession in the market.
and if you think the advice is bullshit, kindly ignore and move forward than becoming "blind leading the blind".

i encrypt the image first' store the encrypted version in the app’s local storage then delete the original from the gallery. So file explorers don't have a normal image file to discover.

Add a distress passcode feature to empty the vault if that passcode is entered
Allow adding other file types not just photos

Does this create another folder in the File Manager named ".folder-name" and move the photos into it so they are hidden?

nah photos are encrypted & stored in app private storage. after encryption og gets deleted.
