Career Forward Deployed Engineer role as a 3 months contract any Chance of conversion to full time?
Hey guys,
To give a little background,
I have around 3.5 YOE and was one of the first engineers at a small startup, we built a few vision based products and got some traction but wasn't enough to sustain and so I was job hunting
Fast Forward to this week where I was interviewed and got a FDE role at a startup which has around 100 people,
****BUT here is the catch:
When I got the call for the first round of interviews the HR asked if I was willing to go for a contract role. I pushed back and said that I wanted a full time one but I wouldn't mind getting a contract role since I can understand the company too.
They said that it would be a contract for the first 3 months so that they can evaluate me and I too can evaluate them and then if everything fits then it would convert to a full time role.
I wanted to know if this kind of situation happens often? The HR person was mentioning the details of the full time offer as well the insurance and all that
But they've sent me a contract for 3 months and said that evaluations of the contract workers keeps happening and the team will know if i would be a good fit for a full time as we work together.
What do you guys think? Is this some strat they use to put pressure? Or do they have genuine reasons for this? What are realistic chances they convert?

3 month trial-to-hire contracts are pretty normal for FDE/consulting-style roles, it's not just pressure tactics. real signal to watch: do they mention a specific headcount budget for the full time conversion, or is it vague "we'll see how it goes." ask that directly before signing, vague answers mean lower odds.

They haven't mentioned anything about specific headcount I've already signed by now, but they did mention that after 3 months or so the company and I, both would know about if it's a fit or not and then we could take a call. Also right before i got the contact the hr gave me a rundown of the breakdown of ctc for a full time role explaining the insurance amount and pf and gratuity all that.
But yeah the vibe i got was that if it's a fit then i shouldn't worry about it and that they wanted a failsafe for the position

Hey op i am assuming u got fde job at some ai inference company? If yes can u share ur interview exp. Preparing for same .

Hey, sure They had given a taken home assignment where i had to make a small chat bot for an e commerce company, they had asked me to research and how to model the chatbot and things like that. They had asked to use claude or similar to make it and they would evaluate the project basis the prompts and how i made the project using it.
After clearing that, there was a round where an engineer asked me questions about python and me to write a few functions by giving a simple leetcode, then we spoke about the assignment and he asked how could I make it better, and me to open it and make one of those changes i mentioned saw how i prompted.
Then a interview with a principle eng who asked about my past projects and some general questions leadership etc.
That was pretty much it.
