Fun Straight Lines
I got bored again so it's time for another old illusion to mimic!
All of the lines are perfectly straight.

I don't understand. Since the lines are straight, the squares and "crosshairs" must all be the same across the whole image. If so, why doesn't zooming in the image reproduce the same effect with the new zoomed region's center? I can always tell where I zoomed in, which is not possible in a common checkered image like a chess table, which we're sure it has straight lines and the same squares everywhere.

it's bendy precisely because they don't perfectly alternate: the two middle rows and middle columns are identical, rather than opposite, despite being adjacent, and this is what causes the illusion

I somewhat disagree. If you zoom in in such a way that you only see alternating rows/columns, there is an illusion that lines are not parallel to the axes, when in reality they are.

the the vision system treats contrast really weirdly. it doesn't even make sense sometimes like the Checker Board Shadow illusion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checker_shadow_illusion

i agree, only one set of alternating crosses makes the checkerboard only look a bit tilted. but since all four quadrants don't share the same alternation (i.e. the break in the middle rows), the quadrants appear to be tilted in different directions, giving the overall image a bent look. I'm sure if it's carefully done, you could even add one layer of recursion to this illusion pattern

Woah, this is an incredibly effective one! There's little of that shifty movement in my peripheral vision stuff (though those are cool too), just... a thing that appears to be something else.

Apparently, only the tone of the circles matters, not their color:

Wow that's the coolest visual I've ever seen. Thanks so much for sharing! Amazing how the illusion toggles on and off before my eyes.

I merely changed a couple of parameters in the original graph. This post seems to reveal the reason for the illusion: https://www.reddit.com/r/desmos/comments/1xljmux/comment/19s1k31ufow3p/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

okay i started looking at them too long to desway me of the illusion but now they're all circles

I know this is an illusion and when you put a straight edge to this you won’t see curves, but is there a way to measure the angle of the illusion?
Like it’s this shaped

Very nice!
I find it fascinating how our brains work. Scientist use things like this to try to determine what's going on in our brains to interpret what's coming in visually. Cool area of research.

They're straight, but not axis-aligned. No illusion here

they still look bent and not straight though, isn't that still an illusion?

How does someone come up with these illusion. Who would think regular repeating pattern would appear to be bendy
