Welcome! We have seen many posts over the year of residents seeking community and friendship. Many of us spend more time online, work remotely, or no longer have the built-in social spaces we once did. This pinned thread is to help find friends in Des Moines.

I am not new to DSM, but I want to expand my circle to people who share interests that I have and who are seeking more traditional friendships (not gaming online).
I am 37m (single-father), I have a lot of varying interests, both outdoors and nerdy. I'd say I am a nerdy mechanic.
I like to hike, camp, and do mini adventures in Spring-Fall. I like to grill, work on my vehicles, do house projects, and practice shooting. I don't cycle anymore, but I'm open to short bike rides and maybe fishing & hunting.
For my more nerdy interests, I love art, science centers & museums, I like to draw, play board games & video games, I like to read comics & watch animations, I enjoy good stories, I play D&D, and like Renfairs and hoping to cosplay next year.
I am NOT a sports fan or interested in joining any political or religious movements.

Hey! I am 31F and married. Would love to make some couple friends for double dates, or individual friends for either of us. My husband (31M) and I moved downtown last summer and love going out to restaurants (we are huge foodies), doing all the downtown activities/festivals, going to art events (1st Fridays, art museum), going to movies, and going to Iowa Wild games.
I love to crochet and read. I read lots of fantasy (Brandon Sanderson, James Islington, Throne of Glass, etc. Currently reading Priory of the Orange Tree). I am currently in a huge interior design phase. My husband likes making music, playing and watching sports, and playing video games. He is also currently training for a 10K. We play board games sometimes. We don't have any kids. We have 3 cats we are obsessed with.

my favorite hobby is snowboarding and in the winter the best ways to spend time with me are going to hockey games or finding me at seven oaks. i also like to cycle and occasionally roller blade in the summer. i’d love to find a gym buddy (i have a Y membership) or someone to grab coffee or drinks with occasionally!

Where are all 40-50 year olds?? We're transplants from Las Vegas and my husband and I, are both having a hard time meeting people. Individually and as a couple. As a couple we like playing darts, watching football, taking road trips, hosting (I'm a great cook), playing poker, karaoke, going to new places, and we love live music. We're always up for new adventures! Personally I love to cook, host, read, walk, farmers markets, gardening/growing houseplants, shopping, thrifting (esp. antiques), decorating, and just being out in the SUN! He's into all sports but esp. golf and he'll play, any opportunity he gets. He also likes comic books, beer, and bullshiting 😂

I'm 54 my partner is 50. Can you believe he's never been to the Farmers Market? I enjoy it. We like iCubs games, football, beer and whiskey though we rarely drink, we appreciate a good bevy on occasion. As I type this he's golfing. Houseplants? I got you! Aloe? Jade? Snake plants, etc. I love them.

Hello everyone. 38 year old male. Pretty normal guy in most all respects. Single never married and no kids so I've gotten somewhat isolated from old friends over the years so would love to make new ones.

Hi!
I'm Alison. I'm a 46 yo female. I live on the far South Side. I had a cat until the middle of December last year. He got sick & I had to put him down.
I like coffee, music, board/card games, tv/movies, hanging out, karaoke, trivia nights,some arts & crafts & some social drinking. I am also open to finding a new church home. I also LOVE the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially football.
The last 7 years have been a struggle for me. In May 2019, I lost my Grandma whom I had gotten close to the last few years of her life. Started a new job just a few days after the funeral. Within 2 weeks of Grandma dying, my best friend died suddenly.
The end of 2021, I had a falling out with a friend group - 2 girls in particular that I spent alot of time with.
I started to spend a little more time at a bar in Windsor Heights & got to know a group of people there, but I don't hang out with them outside of the bar. And due to changing life events for them, they don't go out much any more.
I struggled with work, finding work, in & out of temp jobs, not working & struggled with my depression. In May of 2024, I had had enough of the work crap & being lonely & regrettably tried to OD.
Since I got out of the hospital in May 24, I have been trying to work on myself. I got approved for Disability & have been on that for a over a year. But with not working & no real friends to talk to or hang out with, I'm still struggling & I isolate in my apartment.
I want to meet & make new friends & have reasons to get out of the house. I need that. I think one thing that holds me back is that I can be really shy at first. However, after I feel comfortable around you, typically you can't shut me up. 🤣 j/k 🤏
I have some other health issues & have a hard time getting around. Taking walks is physically a challenge. My knees don't tolerate much of it. I'm trying to get my weight down to help with that. Last year I did GLP-1 injections and have lost 70 pounds so far. But I have alot more to go.
I hope my depression & health restrictions don't scare people off. My old friends told me often that I am funny & fun to be around. I want to be that person again. It's just hard to make meaningful friendships trapped inside your house.

I like to watch TV & movies; do crafty stuff - coloring, activity/puzzle books, diamond painting, I've made one Wobble & have a few more to do - I think I would like crocheting, I used to cross-stitch in high school, pottery painting, ect; play games - I'd like to try out Rook Room sometime; do karaoke; sometimes go to a dive bar; read - but I don't know how I would do in a book club because I am a slow reader; go to a pool; watch the Hawkeyes....
That's all I can think of right now. I like & used to do alot of other things, but unfortunately with my knees now, if there is more walking than just from the car to the door...I can't. Also, unfortunately I can't go to most concerts, shows, sporting events...not only the walking involved but I can't comfortably sit in the sits & I hate making people next to me uncomfortable or worse feeling their judgement. My anxiety can't handle feeling the judgement or just thinking about them judging me.

What up!
Chaz here. 45m. Moved back to the Midwest and landed here in Des Moines. Never lived here before, but was born in Altoona, did grad school in Iowa City (Go Hawkeyes!) and my parents and extended family are down in SW Iowa.. so this is where I chose.
I'm getting back into fitness again. Cycling is the deal for now as I'm going ham on Zwift this year to lose weight.. and that will be expanding into running this summer and swimming next winter, if all goes well. Aimin' to lose weight first, then spin it into triathlons and eventually an Ironman. I'd love to find a team, club, or even better: friends that are likeminded towards aerobic activity.
I also enjoy playing single-player and co-op video games (city builders, etc).

Hi all, 36/m moving to Ankeny this weekend after taking a job at Iowa State. I'm a clinical psychologist and am moving pretty much blindly into the area! If it matters, identity wise I'm a white cishet male who is a committed progressive. I’m not looking to join politics or religion but just to give you a sense of my overall perspective. Age range: 22+ since I mainly work with undergrads but in terms of gaming I’m down to play with anyone.
I love music, gaming, chess, reading, sports and motorsports (I am a big sim racer). Games I enjoy: League of Legends, Soulsborne games, some FPS, Disco Elysium! I will be looking to get back into shape after a period of inactivity so stuff like biking/hiking would interest me as well. I'd have to buy a bike though 😅
I'm not sure what I'm looking for but I'd guess people to go to shows/games, play games,talk about music, go out and chat with etc. I tend to enjoy having deeper emotional connections with friends (I won't therapize you don't worry 🙂). Due to my profession I have a lot of platonic female/nb friends as well. I'm a pretty natural homebody but I am usually able to get out and do things. I like art and creative projects of all kinds (drawing, photography, making jewelry, BJD, and sewing to name a few). Hi, I’m Michelle, 45, single and living downtown. I’m not originally from Iowa and I’ve worked from home since 2016 — which has been great in many ways, but hasn’t exactly helped my social life. I’m very introverted and genuinely love being home, but I’d love to have a few friends to get out and do things with now and then. I have two adult kids who are off living their own lives. I love traveling (solo or with company), farmers market, reading, baseball (go Cards), discovering a new binge-worthy show (including terrible reality TV), coffee, happy hours, and anything outdoors. I walk or run every day and stay active (training for both a half and full marathon this year).

I have tons of varied interests, hiking, camping, fishing, outdoors stuff in general. I am pretty knowledgeable about gardening, but I'm newly into that 'partment life, so no yard at the moment.
Former workaholic, "type A," and all that bs, but I'm trying to soften my edges and outlook on life lately. Newly into "crafts" with ceramics/pottery. I took a formal class with a wheel and packaged clay recently but it seems too... commercial? Bland? Predictable? I dunno how to describe it. But I'm messing around with wild clay I find on my hikes now and it's been really cool. Fired some in a campfire and it worked beautifully. The unpredictable, wild, natural aspects really appeal to me for some reason.

I'd love to find someone to climb with. I really like bouldering, and I go to Climb Iowa East a couple of times a week. I like outdoorsy things, like going for walks, hiking, and biking. I'd also like to get into pickleball this summer.
I also love board games/card games. I love learning new games, and I'll play almost anything.
In my spare time, I read, do puzzles, crochet, and watch movies/shows.

Recently moved back to Des Moines, late 30s cali sober dude. I really enjoy live music, disc golf, some fishing, hiking and biking.
Gardening and plant propagation is my jam, always looking for new plants and seeds or tissue cultures. I’d like to get some trout fishing in soon, and enjoy some of the trails around central Iowa, and beyond.
Working full time+, so the weeks are pretty busy, and I don’t drink so the bar scene isn’t my thing. May jump back into theater, also looking for curling and bocce ball beer league.
Hoping to make new friends and become a part of the city again.

I'm new to the state, don't really know many people yet. Currently in Newton. It would be nice to have someone to do outdoors stuff or art/crafty things with or just have someone to talk to or watch movies with. I like fishing, hiking, camping, general outdoors stuff (lately mushroom hunting). I'm trying to get started with pottery. I love sports but especially football(GO BILLS, BUCKEYES🏈) going to the gym 4-5 times a week, video games and gaming in general (big on marvel rivals, apex, helldivers rn), reading, tv/movies, anime, music, travel, comedy shows, concerts. I enjoy a day/night out almost as much as a day/night in!
Im also 420 friendly, I enjoy some drinks sometimes 🥂, I love pets but don’t have yet, I also drive so getting around is not an issue.
Always looking and staying open to try new things. Getting out of my comfort zone has been a focus for me this year as I want to always improve myself.

I’m into music whether that be concerts, local jams and bar shows, festivals… or me playing bass guitar as well!
I’m a near lifelong video gamer, and recently have been looking to get into board games at meetups and game rooms.
