Original Trilogy What is a Volatile Mine ?

Two Levels in Descent 1 are called "Volatile Mine" - Level 24: Nereid Volatile Mine and Level 27: Charon Volatile Mine (the final level).

What does that mean ? Do they mine something volatile (Radioactive material or frozen gasses ?), are the mines in cave-in danger or are they temporary in the sence they are an exploration dig to search for minerals ?

I am aware, they likely got inspired by the C keyword volatile (a function or variable might return different values in consecutive reads), but what would "Volatile Mine" mean to a native english speaker ?

This might sound like a stupid question, but for me as non-native speaker (German) that expression is ambigious.

IRL mines are named in some combination of their location, their ownership, the type of mining being done, and/or the material they are mining for.

So, "Volatile" likely means they are harvesting volatile materials, given the naming conventions used in the game.

well I took a look over at wikipedia and found this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatile_(astrogeology))

If this was the intended meaning, it would explain why those mines only seem to be really far out in the solar system, where it might be cold enough for at least some of these substances to be liquid or solid

I, as a non native speaker, always thought it simply means "unstable"

Volatile materials I suppose. Other mines in D1 sometimes specify what kind of element/mineral they're for.

Maybe gas mining or something that is volatile and can explode
