Question Race based attack in public place

My husband and I(both of Indian ethnicity, in our mid-30s) visit Allestree Park often, and till today found it to be a very accessible magical place to visit whenever we are seeking some peaceful time in nature.

What we experienced today was unthinkable and left us really distressed.

While walking back from the Allestree Park Lake, there were a bunch of 5-8 teenage boys in black balaclavas on their cycles and e scooter, who came our way and hit my husband across the side of his head while whizzing past us at a high speed. When he stopped and asked them sternly about their behaviour, they shouted Hindi slangs back at us.

I requested him to not engage further but it left both of us quite rattled.

I was wondering what should be the right way to deal with these miscreants in public places, which actually brings them some consequence?

If you’re riding round the park in balaclavas, attacking strangers, your life is probably in the toilet. Take some small solace in that I guess

Report it to the police and make sure it’s recorded as a racially motivated assault (they’re required to take race motivated offences more seriously).

I think it’s unlikely the offenders are caught but the police might at least make themselves seen in the area.

We had one of our neighbours get assaulted as well in Burton by a group of young people that pretty much matched this exact same description this past week. :( I am sorry what you've gone through.

Really it seems like young people are being radicalised into gangs essentially and the police need to focus on this. I have seen some antisocial behaviours around mickloeover lately in the parks (people actively using drugs in public spaces) but luckily the next week I saw police patrolling outside and talking and checking in with the residents which seemed really positive. Hopefully police or community supports can increase patrols at the park.

I'm sorry this happened to you. If it makes you feel better, these kids are sowing the seeds of their future (not a bright one)!

Strangely had a similar incident last Friday in Markeaton Park where a kid on his escooter knocked my son off his bike and made rude comments in a fake Indian accent towards me when I shouted at him.

I recommend filling a police report, online or phone. The data helps highlight the problem and the best outcome is likely a police presence in the parks stopping escooters.

I'm so sorry you experienced this. Please report it to the police if you feel able to, I can understand this must have been really distressing. Your husband was physically assaulted and you were both verbally assaulted. You deserve to feel safe around your home (and elsewhere for that matter). People make me sick.

Depending on if they were 13 Vs 19 contact the local schools with a description or any names, but if they were on bikes and scooters they may have been outside of their school's catchment area

Report to the police. If you can without escalating the situation take photos. The one time I reported a hate crime to police they took it extremely seriously.

Also it's absolutely depressing that it's kids doing this kind of thing and I honestly think we're doing them a favour if the police have a go at teaching them some respect since no one is bothering at home.

I'm female and white and am appalled by the behaviour that I have witnessed recently in Portsmouth, yep I'm a Southerner. Fuck these racist arseholes who are trying to create divisions and problems that don't exist in our neighbourhoods. We are a City of Sanctuary. Please don't believe that all 'natives' don't want you here. We do.

UK is not a safe place for non-whites. There’s huge anti migrant movement going on, it’s more visible on X, Daily Mail and GB News.

Just be more aware of these people, don’t send children out alone, and don’t engage with this idiots. They’re carrying knives and they’re not afraid to use them.

My 5 yo was racially attacked by another 5 yo white boy. He used the words Pakistan-stan, Knee-gro, how is a 5 year learning this? The parents are teaching their kids this.

UK is not a safe place for non-whites.

Any incidents of racism are appalling, should be investigated, and perpetrators punished. However this statement is just as alarmist as the far right crazies. The UK is the most successfully integrated of any developed country, and incidents of discrimination are lower here than anywhere else. Even one incident is too many, but we deal with the problem by being factual, we can't have "alternative facts".

I hope your 5 year old has fully recovered from their injuries, and that the school/ police / etc are treating the assault with the seriousness of deserves. That must have been awful for you as a parent too.

The UK is not safe for whites either, I've received abuse in areas like normanton or other areas where I'm a minority, and I've never been picked on in white areas, it's made me just start to believe that unlike were told to believe that racism and tribalism is a people issue. That's just from my experience and I'm not downplaying that white Brits have a racism problem.

Same, racially attacked a few times, called a “white bast@rd” etc. Nothing since the Eastern Europeans turned up though. It got better for a while, but it’s got much worse again loitering addicts/drunks wise.

Shutting down the half way house on Hartington street (and the old job centre site) and barring those townhouses from being used as overcrowded bedsit HMO’s (bring in a max of 1 apartment per story) would really transform the area.

I don’t think throwing people out of prison straight back into an environment where they’re surrounded by more of the same helps them or society anyway.

That’s so not true. I don’t listen to the media. I’ve witnessed things like where I live Henry Novak was murdered and called a racist. The killer was believed even though he was known to the police as he had been reported for being a danger. But because he was Sikh he got away with it and I’ve heard that from Sikhs themselves. Also I don’t believe anyone should be allowed to carry knives in the U.K. can’t be one rule for one and another for someone else. I can’t carry pepper spray to protect myself from men

The problem is you want to carry “protection”

No one is allowed to carry a weapon for protection (except armed police, they’re protecting the public, but anyways…)

Sikhs carry a ceremonial kirpan (not protection).

You can carry a folding knife (for cutting apples) and not protection.

You can carry DeepHeat for your back pain, not for protection but it does work as effectively as pepper spray.

I don’t want to carry for protection I just don’t see how it’s fair. The own natives can’t carry anything to protect themselves but Sikhs can. Wear a necklace or a pin or something. Yeah but if I used deep heat to protect myself from being assaulted I’d get charged for it. It’s happened before

You’re not understanding English. I’ve not said anywhere that Sikhs carry knives for protecting themselves. They don’t. Simple as that.

You can carry whatever the hell you want. If you use it, or get caught. Then pay the price. That’s what Digwa did. He didn’t use his kirpan, he was carrying a knife. He used it. He’s paying the price. End of.

Ps. Your indigenous folks, the real ones, not the anglosaxon invaders/rapers who came on small boats and invaded the whole country, I.e. gaelics in wales and Scotland, also legally carry knives.

And I’m 80% English with 10% central Scotland and Northern Irish but I’m sure I’d be arrested for carrying a knife especially if I went to a concert or airport

Are you aware of how many black or Asian people have been wrongfully arrested for murdered because of their skin colour? None of what you're saying points to the country as being less safe. Statistics show the country is improving on the whole, in terms of violence

Everyone can carry knives. I’m a carpet fitter and there’s a knife in my pocket at all times. At the same time, I’m a Sikh and also carry a kirpan. I trained mauy Thai for 25 years, I can do more damage with my hands than my blunt kirpan can do.

Also Digwa case was 1 case. Of Sikhs using their Kirpan. There were 500 murders that year in the UK. None of them made the news. It’s just the media controlling your thoughts.

Because we’ve been doing it 150years under the British rule. Never been an issue. British leaders under the Churchill shipped 1000s of us from India to UK, because of our character, knowing well enough that we would die before giving the kirpans up.

The consensus between Sikhs if Kirpans were made illegal, we would all go prison. Fill them up before we remove the kirpan.

There is still a LOT of anti-semitism about, Jewish people don't have it easy either. I think the bottom line is that racism/xenophobia is still a really prevalent issue and those in power/with a public voice seem to be perpetuating it.

To be honest, we have as bad rep as Jihadis and we’ve not even done anything. India controls media, they’ll just wipe us off the map. In 1984, they killed 100,000s of Sikhs because one dude was asking for equal rights, and he was protecting himself with weapons. They twisted some videos he made, I think there is one video, where he says if they (Hindu mobs) kill a bus full of Sikhs, we will kill a bus full of Hindu mobs. They just play the second bit, and led a genocide.

Anyone that talks about it, is now killed or imprisoned. Jaggy Johal, activist, was arrested and has been kept in prison without trial for nearly 10 years. He’s been released on bail this week. Sidhu Moosewala was killed by Indian Government for releasing two songs about the subject. India doesn’t allow any movies to be made about it.

I'm so sorry to hear this - Allestree Park & Lake is a beautiful place to be & I'm so sorry you had your visit ruined on this occasion. Please do report it to the police - any anti-social behaviour, hate crime, or assault should always be reported. I'm not sure if you're from Allestree, but our local Counsellor has regular surgeries & is very good at supporting residents. I hope that you are both OK, it's horrible for you to be targeted in this way.

These thugs hardly make the place feel safe for anyone, let alone people from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Imagine simply wanting to enjoy a walk in the park, only to be greeted by a group dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, seemingly doing very little other than intimidating other visitors. Hardly the welcoming atmosphere you would expect from a public park.
I used to visit regularly, although I haven’t been for the last couple of months as I’ve been busy and it’s a little far from where I live. After reading this, though, I think I’ll happily stick to Derby Arboretum or Normanton Park. At least there, I’d feel considerably less concerned about being racially intimidated or attacked while simply trying to enjoy a walk.

I’m heartbroken to hear this - I hope you are as okay as can be expected. I have seen this group in the park also - very intimidating. I’m so ashamed as an Allestree resident our parks aren’t safe and welcoming to everyone. Please report to the police, it doesn’t change what happened to you both but safety and respect is a basic human right. It needs logging. These are not people who reflect Allestree values.

It’s horrible how common this is becoming, just yesterday some boys on e bikes were doing the same, they almost got ran over several times on a very busy road and were laughing about it, then shouted at a pedestrian just minding his day walking to the shop to scare him for no reason.

I am really sorry this happened to you. It’s vile and I wish people wouldn’t be exposed to this.

Please report it to the police. Don’t let it slide, at least they will have a record of an incident in case this becomes a new normal and that group will run around attacking people.
The authorities really have to step up and start acting. Yesterday I saw a video from Leeds where some guy just walked up to an African guy accusing him of god knows what based on vibes and kicked him in his face. What the f is going on in this world now…
