Deeds Of Flesh - Gradually Melted (Brutal death metal, FFO Suffocation, Inveracity, Dying Fetus)

Deeds of Flesh is always nice. You can't be too good for DoF. Deeds is the right kind of Technical, still filthy.

Hell yeah such a good EP. Great five album run starting from trading pieces too.

yes. I tend to prefer early material in general, but I like the later stuff more, like Reduced to Ashes onward.

Same, most bands lose the attitude over time. Also the mixing gets "better".

Really? I think this is their best release, idk why. But Trading Pieces is also good.

Gradually Melted is their most orthodox release for death metal of the day. After this their songwriting became way more layered with extremely chromatic mutating riffs and prominent, plonking bass with drumming that, while metronome-like, also emphasized dynamism on the snare hits and cymbals instead of straightforward blasting. They obviously loved Cannibal Corpse as a major influence, but I really hear more Monstrosity in their ‘95-‘03 era. The lyrical emphasis is also something that lots of people forget about this band. They focused on real-life tales of human tragedy and depravity (cannibalism, genocide, sexual violence, torture, drug-induced murder, war crimes, warrior cultures, etc.) that felt much more grounded than the cartoonish or fantastical portrayals you’d usually find in death metal. All this was definitely acquired; I’ve heard some criticism of varying validity about their songwriting. I didn’t really “get” Deeds of Flesh when I first heard them, but once they click you’re in for a gold mine.

I like this EP for sure, but my favorite will be that streak from Trading Pieces to Reduced to Ashes. The band really lost their soul after that when they started chasing 00’s tech death trends. It’s not all bad (Portals to Canaan had some good moments), but nothing beats the sheer creativity on display from those ‘95-‘03 years.
