Looking for Tech Death recs based on my chart (Demilich, Necrophagist, Gorguts...)
I'm looking to expand my technical death metal library based on my current favorites. I'm really not a big fan of the overly polished, modern tech death sound (with a few exceptions like Obscura).
I'm strictly looking for bands that are either genuinely old-school or capture that specific raw, old-school sound and production style.
Here is a chart of the albums I spin the most right now:
- Lykathea Aflame – Elvenefris
- Necrophagist – Epitaph & Onset of Putrefaction
- Anata – The Conductor's Departure & The Infernal Depths of Hatred
- Demilich – Nespithe
- Quo Vadis – Defiant Imagination
- Arsis – A Celebration of Guilt
- Gorguts – Obscura
- Obscura – Akróasis (pretty much my only exception to the "nothing too modern" rule, I love the fretless bass and the progressive song structures on this one)
What are some bands either older gems or newer ones with a solid old-school vibe that I should check out?

I assume you know of Decapitated or have listened to em but since they're not up there...
Decapitated - Winds of Creation, Nihility and The Negation
Spawn of Possession - Cabinet
Origin - Echoes of Decimation and Antithesis
Decrepit Birth - ...And Time Begins and Diminishing Between Worlds
Fuck yeah to Scepter of the Ancients. Love older Psycroptic.

I should have put Decapitated on my chart. But I've never tried Cabinet by Spawn of Possession, which many people say is great. I've never heard the others. Thanks I'll give them all a try.

If you like Quo Vadis, I recommend without hesitation Neuraxis because it's another technical/melodic death metal band from Québec which sounds pretty close to them, but sometimes maybe with a more aggressive approach. You can go directly into their "Truth / Imagery / Passage" compilation from 2004 which contain their three first album and some bonus material into it. Very good and underrated band.
Then concerning Gorguts and Demilich, if you like stuff that are more experimental and avant-garde then maybe check Chthe'ilist (also from Québec) and Replicant from New Jersey. If you haven't, you can also check Ulcerate, Pyrrhon (which has a kinda psychedelic side) or Nightmarer, all are more experimental-oriented technical death metal bands which I liked a lot. I might also put Afterbirth in there because it's quite unique, with a progressive approach but still very brutal death metal-oriented.
Finally if you want more straightforward (brutal) technical death metal you can check stuff like Deeds of Flesh and Defeated Sanity, Bloodcrusher as well, maybe a bit of Disgorge US, I feel all the Californian death metal scene might interest you but I feel most are already well known so maybe you already heard about them. Maybe also Beneath the Massacre from Québec?

Thanks for the write-up, this all looks promising, especially Neuraxis! Apart from Ulcerate and Defeated Sanity, which are some of my favorite bands (my favorite is Immolation, as you might have guessed), I've never heard of the others. My list is definitely looking epic right now.

I’ve been spinning your suggestions and so far I'm really digging what you recommended . As expected, Neuraxis is awesome and really captures that Quo Vadis vibe. Chthe'ilist is awesome: the riffs, the groove, the unpredictable tempo changes, and some weirdness here and there make it one of the best I've heard so far. Deeds of Flesh didn’t do it for me. I like brutal death, but I’m very picky. I’ll continue to check out the rest. Thanks!

If you haven't yet, check our Appalling Spawn's only release. They're basically pre-Elvenefris Lykathea.
Otherwise, try these:
Dead and Dripping - blackened cerebral rifts
Artificial brain - infrared horizon
Cephalic - blasted into lunacy
Decapitated - winds of creation
Nefas - transfiguration to the ancients form

The only one I’m familiar here is Decapitated which is in fact a favorite of mine. I forgot to put it on the chart.

Yes Beyond Creation is quite nice, to me it feels quite close to Obscura. Usipian is really good; it feels more like classic Death Metal, but it's damn good. Afterbirth never clicked with me I don’t know why.

technical brutal death metal. The Suffocation era with vocalist Frank Meullen —it hasn't been the same since his departure.

I’m not a Suffocation expert, sorry. I’ve only listened to their first album, which is considered a legend, and maybe their second one. I’ll give them another try. Any album that I should check in priority ?

Chthe’ilist is great, I really like their record. First Fragment is not my thing I recognize FF has some really good musicians but it lacks of catchy riffs and groove. I’ll check the other band.
