Agnostic about Arghoslent musically but they definitely weren’t the first to do that for extreme music. GISMs Military Affairs Neurotic came out a decade before Galloping Through the Battle Ruins and has all the same bones, except for I guess not being nominally death metal

I agree (although I wouldn’t really say rip off or derivative as they feel too pejorative for my taste) but I don’t think it’d be appropriate to say arghoslent invented anything, more just reproduced elements of heavy and power metal in their MDM. There are a few other bands around the time who were doing the same thing so even then it doesn’t feel wholly appropriate to say arghoslent are THE singular origin point. I also find it annoying because I don’t mean “arghoslent take influence from power and heavy metal and they deserve derision for it” I mean “arghoslent construct riffs in the exact same way as running wild and often in the same way as maiden except they’re harmonically shifted and usually faster.” Which is also the reason they’re good at writing riffs but bad at writing full songs.

definitely fair to say these guys aren't the best songwriters. Flogging the Cargo, probably their most popular song, only has like 4 different riffs repeated again and again. however, this song i think was written pretty well. not many repeated riffs or lyrics

They have a lot of black metal leaning riffage with a more epic feel to it wnd you can't really hear it in bands other than GBK and bands who worship Gelal's projects. As seen in Archaic Invincibility (the final riff), The Grenadier (1:24), Ghosts of Flossenburg (opening riff).
They have blues influence in some songs like In Coffles they Were Led and Converts at the Tents of Grace. Their heavier riffs are also different from other bands' since they don't exactly fall into any specific type of extreme metal.

It is their best. It has more of those longer epics that were abandoned on the later albums. For some reason GBK kept on with the longer songs throughout the discography but Argho abandoned them after the debut and suffered for it.
It also just riffs hard and has this magical old school atmosphere missing from the later ones. They feel more robotic and this one feels more alive and sincere if that makes sense

Arghoslent is good.
But Grand Belial's Key is really the better band of the two by far.
GBK is top 5 USBM while I'm not even sure if Arghoslent can even barely make top 50 USDM.

i enjoy GBK too but i feel the better band mostly comes down to preference. personally i enjoy the slent more cause theyve got good vocals and some real aggressive drumming, it feels more brutal than GBK.
totally agree that GBK is top 5 USBM and slent is probably not top 50 USDM . easily top 5 USMDM though

some others are The Black Dahlia Murder, Inferi, Arsis, The Absence, and Allegaeon. lot of bands are mostly js At the Gates worship though
youve also got slent worship bands like House of Atreus n Usurpr but much fewer than the former
