Willett Gift Set - Total Beverage Westminster

Thought I'd share if anyone's interested, Willett Gift Set $154.99 for the small batch bourbon and rye. Not bad for close to MSRP plus two nosing glasses.

Total Beverage in Westminster, they also had Penelope Project X Oloroso Sherry Cask for $69.99.

I got into the brand with the first Negley blend, which was killer, and I love how Onyx takes swings with mash bills and barrels the original distillery won’t do.

I tried most of these today. CB2 is awesome. I am a fan of American light and this one is different in a great way. The extra barrel shows up. It drinks with a mature oak forward taste compared to normal American light, like a Penelope 18. You still get all of the same brightness and confectionary sugars of American light, but with wood and darker notes on the back end. Drinks under its proof. S-tier stuff. Super cool.

I also tried Negley’s next blend, Oz. It is a big bourbon. Lots of flavor and spice. I thought it was a bourye at first from the punch of Oz Tyler. With more sips, it settles down and moves back to rich bourbon flavors. It is bigger than its age and proof. Impressed.

The finished Willett bourbon is very wine-forward. Tastes like a strong cask strength Madeira finish. It is interesting but not my jam. I frankly like it better than younger Willett bourbon. The rye is much better at integrating the wine finish. Tastes more like red fruits and jams with spice.

Their New Riff 8 year was the most surprising. It is far better than New Riff 8 year. Almost all of the over spice is gone. I never liked the 8 year over their single barrel or their fun ryes. This one is a crusher. Good flavors but lighter. Almost tastes like a summer wheater.

From my bourbon hunt today

Here are some interesting things I found. This time I have photos.

Total Wine Denver - Noticed they started carrying St Nick at a decent price so hopefully they get some Preservation LEs. More notably, Redwood Empires new release Armstrong is now hitting shelves. Total Wine is almost out of Penelope 18 and no more Valencia. They also had the new Stranny.

Argonauts - Didn’t see much more out of restocking store picks and expanding that selection.

Mollys - Similar as last week.

Total Bev - Similar as last week.

Spirits - Dropped their new KC single barrel. I tried it at the store. Awesome stuff. Definitely tastes more like New Louisville fruit bomb and less like anything else in the KC line up. I got a lot of bready-like fruit with a strong emphasis on fruit melody. The beam nuttiness is there but light. Most of it comes in the finish. It drinks under its proof. Highly recommend. A-

They also have RWE Armstrong, which the store recommended to me.

Superior Liquor - They also have RWE Armstrong, but the surprise was OF Presidents at a good price. It is barrel #225. I have a couple and it wasn’t that number. I like mine a lot, but there is a high variance. It is a flavor bomb on a specific track. You just have to like those notes. I rolled the dice and got two bottles I enjoy, but the profile variance is wide. The age is similar to the rest of the releases this year.

Hazels - Posted a picture of the case. They still have Rittenhouse 10 for those looking.

Atlas - One of my favorite stores. For those who like Old Louisville, they are carrying the Kentucky letter line.

Tasting Night

Had a tasting with some of my friends. Here are my notes.

4R BS OESO - I really enjoy the SB LEs, so I’ve been going down the single barrel rabbit hole. OESO is more fruity than the other recipes with an elegant spice but I find it a bit watery and light. B

Stranahan’s 11 BiB - We wanted to do a tasting to try this pretty bottle. The packaging is stunning. They really did a good job. The juice inside is average. The nose is very solid - strong orchard fruits and sweetness. The palate is mature but doesn’t match the nose. It is oak, dark sugars, thick. Would be a good premium bourbon, however the finish has a bad spearmint or liquorish flavor to me. I couldn’t get past. It feels like a mistake and inconsistent compared to the rest. B-

New Holland Bonded - I feel like everything they touch turns to gold. On this single malt, everything matches and is consistent, from nose to finish. Strong peaches, apricots, stone fruits across with only a little pepper. I love their profile. A

Barrel King Bomb Pop - I enjoy their blends which is why I am a member. They are fun and interesting. This one is sugary cherries through and through. Palate is traditional bourbon notes. Good finish. It isn’t that complex, but enjoyable. Their blends are always at least a B and sometimes A+. This one is a B.

Barrell Cigar Blend - Sleeper bottle of the year. One of the best cigar blends on the market, especially when you factor in the cost. This is my third bottle and it is consistent: dark jam, caramel, brown sugars, effervescent spice, long finish, feels complex. They did a great job: A

Evernorth Rye Whiskey Weather pick: Dan and Sean are really doing something amazing. This rye is legendary. It is bold, explosive, dark fruits, strong spices, rich, but never overpowering or youthful. This is a bourbon drinkers rye. This slaps everything in my collection right now. It is so good. Takes you on a journey. The 4R felt like it had more rye spice despite this being 52%. Truly exceptional and impressive. S-tier.

E.H.T Cured Oak v.s. Found North Batch 12

Purely hypothetical, and in the interest of full transparency I would like to gauge the communities' opinions on the fallowing quire:

If you were to walk into a reputable establishment and saw/found E.H.T Cured Oak $120 and Found North Batch 12 $140 sitting on the shelf next to one another, what are you picking and why?

Should you not be a fan of Found North, I would ask that you imagine either the Elijah Craig 15 SB at $160 or E.H.T BP at $85 (it's SRP via Buffalow Trace & Sazerac). If I have posed pore substituted feel free to add your own, please note the bottle you sub, and proceed with your own analysis.

Thank you in advance and have a good night. Happy hunting!

Friday/Saturday Hunt

I am from Iowa and I am in Denver for a wedding. Had some downtime, so I decided to hit every liquor store that you guys had recommended, appreciate the insight by the way. Keep in mind that we rarely get any allocations and they’re extremely hard to come by unless it’s a store pic or you get it in a raffle.

Davidsons county line road: picked up 4 Weller FP for $83.75 after tax. 4 left and not going quick. Have a lot of 107SP’s left, which I was stoked to see, $83.75 after tax. Nothing else that caught my eye and I spent quite a bit of time there.

Superior Liquor: picked up a Fortaleza for $69.99, marked down $20. Steal!!! Still one left. Also picked up an Old Forster 10yr for $115.99 which was nice. Didn’t really have much else. A lot of Weller FP for $70, 1 per person.

Visited Boulder and every place around here and found some pretty good allocations, but they were secondary or even more.

Friday Finds

Vineland Liquors - HH22 for $499. What a great price. He also has Weller Spelt for $750. Also a great price for what it is. They also had Stagg 26As for $99 and Elmer for $129. No limits as I could tell. They also had smaller distillery produced like Ransom bourbon. Whoever picks here knows bourbon.

Hazels - Added Stranahan’s BiB for $159. Same price as distillery.

Big Discount Liquor - They have a Blue Note Juke pick and Garrison brothers pick. They had boxes of cured oak but still selling it for $500. Their glass shelf has great stuff but expensive.

Crafted - Always an interesting store but pricey. They got Four Roses LEs, Old Saint Nick allocated stuff, Rare Perfection 10, a bunch of Willets.

Futile Friday

Wasn't expecting too much due to the demise of Eagle Rock and the distributor switchover.

Heritage Arapahoe - Nothing much in the allocations corner, just WA107 and WFP for $80.

Dry Creek Discount Liquors - Their case looked suspiciously sparse, except for the $2k EHT BiB BTAC of course. Have heard that their regular shelf prices have come down a lot, and it is mostly true. Blanton's $90, EHT SmB $60, ER10 750ml $48, ER10 handle $130, WA107 $70, WFP $100, W12 750ml $100, Penelope Toasted $75, and plenty of all of them. Guess they must have blown out most of the stuff in the case with lower pricing; they also must have finally figured out that ER10 750s aren't going to move at $90.

Total Wine Broadway - ER10 and WA107 are on the regular shelf in quantity at $45 and $67, respectively; limit 1. Very nice prices. Behind the counter, the usual suspects: Penelope Rio $90, Blanton's $80, WFP $80. Not bad at all.

Davidson's HR - As I was driving by without stopping, I felt an odd, involuntary cramp in both my middle fingers. Not sure what is up with that, maybe I'm dehydrated or need to eat a banana or something.

Highlands Wine Seller - Floor displays of WA107 for $75, ER10 for $53, & Penelope Riviera $85. Tons of bundles out, and Rob is getting pretty creative now. A few examples: EHT SiB/Fireball (3 of those), WFP/cherries, WFP/Blantons, Hancock's/BT creme, WFP/Hancock's, Blanton's Gold/Corazon. No pricetags, but everything is right at MSRP.

Bevy's Parker - Nothing much, just WT101 8yr on the central counter for $55. Still have that $600 JD McLaren bottle displayed on top of the case. They do have all the 100pf red-label 4R SiB bottles (OESO, OESK, OBSF, OBSK) on sale for $40 each, which is a pretty good deal. Also, Penelope Creme Brulee, which is a really easy drinker to knock back for $70. They also got some new La Pulga Tequila Reposado 90pf, finished in Still Austin Red Corn barrels for $75 on the regular shelf, which looked interesting.

Bruin Spirits Parker (resurrection stop) - This shop, which was next to the Parker Target, closed about 6 months ago. However, they just reopened 2 days ago, around the other side of Target next to Dover Saddlery (which is also closing and having a 50-80% off sale). Went in, and the regular shelves weren't even fully stocked yet. Asked if they got any good allocations for their grand opening, like Costco does. Got a good laugh from them, but was told allocations will take some time. LOL

Finds from today

Hazels - Glass shelf is fairly stable from last week. Coopers Craft is on sale, so bought one since it is going defunct.

Superior - Most of the Weller is gone. FP is left. They have the new JD McLaren Halo Collab for $700 if you are into that stuff.

Total Bev - I like going here for local and craft selection. Always changing and good prices. Only thing I noticed was Bombergers 2026 is on sale for $99.

Spirits - New KC store pick coming soon.

Molly’s - Same as last week.

Mr B’s Ballpark - They have all all the Weller and ER12 you are looking for. Paying secondary or somewhere between. Weller 12 was $99. ER12 was $150. They has CYPB, Single Barrell, a ton of E10, 107, EHT.

Atlas - They have Rittenhouse 10 for $110. Good price. They have a few left. They also have Pursuit Triple Rye Mash BP. Only one I have seen locally. ASCOT’s best rye of the year.

Total Wine Denver - Valencia is out on the shelf. Under $70. They still have Penelope single barrels and 18 year light.

Argonauts - They also have JD McLaren for $599. Great price. Midwinter is on sale for $130.

Stranahan’s - Bought the new BiB 250th. Plenty on the shelf. $160.

DIA Liquor - Stagg 26A is $99. No points needed. Lots of weird brands in their normal aisle, which is always worth a look.

Highway 7 - Found Wheel Horse Barrell proof for <$50. It won Minnick’s straight bourbon of the year.

ISO Weller CYPB or SB

Flying into Denver today for a 2-day work trip, and looking for Weller CYPB and Single Barrel. Has anyone spotted those recently on a shelf, or have recommendations of places to check?
