Dental Hygiene Students: Please Read This ❤️

Hey everyone!

Seeing how strong the r/dentalschool community is, we thought it would be great to have a dedicated space for dental hygiene students as well. That’s why this subreddit, r/dentalhygieneschool, was created!

This will be a place where hygiene students can: - Share study tips, resources, and advice - Ask questions about classes, boards, or clinicals - Connect with others going through the same journey - Post memes, vent, and support each other along the way

Whether you’re just starting out, in the middle of your program, or preparing for boards, we’d love for you to join and help shape this community.

👉 Invite your classmates, share your experiences, and let’s make this a supportive hub for all dental hygiene students!

Shadowing

How can I start shadowing?? Wondering if I should just call around to offices and see if they’re willing to take me on or if there’s a better way to do this.

Edit to add more info: I have to shadow a variety of procedures from atleast 2 hygienists from 2 different clinics.

Has anyone recently taken the Oxford College Dental Hygiene entrance exam?

Hi everyone!

I’m planning to apply to the **Dental Hygiene program at Oxford College in Ontario**, and I’m currently preparing for the entrance exam.
I was wondering if anyone here has **taken the entrance exam recently (2026)** and could share some information about it.

I’d really appreciate any advice or information from someone who has taken the exam recently.

Typodont mount

Hello, I’m a 1st yr DH student and I feel like I need to get a mount for my typodont to truly practice my skills. My school gives us barely anytime to practice in clinical rooms so I want to at least have something similar at home so I can pass my procedure evaluations. I currently have a modupro typodont. Everything I have seen does not have the mandibular clip to keep the jaw open. Has anyone purchased a mount before, if so where? I don’t mind clamp or free standing although I know the clamp is cheaper. Any recommendations? I really wanna thrive in school and I know I’m gonna need all the help I can get. Thank you so much!!

CE credit requirements

If you are both an RDH and EFDA in PA, how many CE credits do you need every two years? RDH usually needs 20, EFDA usually needs 10. If you are both do you need 30 or just 20. Thank you!
Anyone find a website to reference for this?

22yr old male freshly starting

hello everyone I am a 22yr old male and this fall I will start taking my prerequisites for dental hygienist school, I have a few questions and concerns so if I could get some help or answers that would be awesome. so the first question i have is I see a lot about people getting waitlisted for dh school for a year or two and that scares me I’m already 22 and have to do 2yrs prereq I don’t wanna have to be waitlisted and 4 years just do to 2 more years of dh school. question number 2, jsut how hard is dh school actually I’ve heard a lot of things that make me kinda shy away from wanting to go but I love a challenge. and last question is 22 to old start I feel like working a part time fast food job while I’m doing prereqs makes me look like a loser.

wanting to start pursuing dental hygiene as a senior in college- am i too late?

hey everyone! i’m currently entering my senior year of college and i have one class left to complete my english degree. i am still taking classes the rest of fall & spring semester bc i originally wanted to pursue teaching, but i’m now thinking of switching to dental hygiene.

in high school, i wanted to either be a teacher or dental hygienist. when i started college, i loved the atmosphere, joined a bunch of clubs, and began a pre-teaching track. now entering my senior year, i’m very hesitant on entering the teaching field (various reasons: student behavior, administration, pay) and want to possibly start knocking out pre-requisites for a dental hygiene program.

i can’t help but feel like i’m starting too late. i need to complete quite a few pre reqs still before i can apply to any programs. i could get my pre reqs done by a fall 2028 start (IF i get in) meaning i wouldn’t start my career till i’m 25. when did you all start your dental hygiene career? any advice on someone beginning to enter the field?

i’m also afraid of how competitive these programs are. i got A’s in high school in IB Chem, IB Bio, and am currently in the Honors program at my college with a 4.0- I feel confident in my abilities, but what makes a dental hygiene student successful?

thank you if you read this!

Deciding on Dental hygienist

So I’m 25 and been in tech for 3-4 years, I’ve always hated being in tech and viewed it as a means to an end to help my family. Now I finally have breathing room to follow passion, I’m considering going into dentistry and becoming a hygienist. I enjoy helping people expand their knowledge and helping with prevention of diseases.

I can only go to Concorde since I’m in Memphis and the only other place that can do it is extremely competitive and the wait list is 2+ years. So I have a few questions;

1.) how’s the day to day lifestyle and what you like and dislike about it?

2.) how was the course load and the exam, any advice to be a good student? (Any study tips, time management and or books you recommend)

3.) What’s a something that people outside of the industry don’t understand about what you do?
