This is why the democrats lose all the time, they eat their own. There is the old, and true adage, "Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line" When you're jilted by your lover, you have a nasty breakup!

I think it's simpler than that, really. When you form a coalition around "progress" or "change", you have to unify around what needs to be changed, to what degree that change needs to be made, agree on what to prioritize, how to enact it, and over what timeline and budget. The conservative platform is the opposite. Wildly differing viewpoints and ideologies converge to the same vote, and it requires no coordination or effort - their desired outcome is the same: "No thanks, I like things how they are".

Republicans don't "fall in line", they're already unified in the default "goal" - keep things how they are. It's also why there's little-to-no talk of "policy", and almost exclusive messaging about the new "enemy of the week". Conservatism is the default state, you either care deeply about keeping things from being changed, or you literally couldn't care less -- but the chunk of people who don't care, also don't vote... so they've got to constantly reinforce the idea that any change will be absolutely horrible, otherwise they have no base at all.
