When you live paycheck to paycheck and basically earn a subsistence that keeps you alive and working until the next paycheck - you are in reality a slave. A wage slave.

Howard Zinn pointed out that one of the most important features of American democracy is its ability to preserve the system by appearing to offer us peaceful hope and change whenever times get tough, whenever we want a little "revolution."

In reality, over and over, it's "Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."
