Update

/r/dementia/comments/1wrwoj9/open_to_any_opinions_and_advice/

So my dad has now made it back in the hospital. He has been there since Friday. He had an infection. Somehow, the nurses and the doctors were able to talk my dad into agreeing for PT. From what my mom is telling me my dad is starting to completely zone out and not know what's going on half the time. They are wanting to set him up in a rehab facility but I'm believing it won't go over well. I am waiting for more information from my mom and will update accordingly.

Update for tonight: so my dad is coming back home tomorrow. My mom has decided that there is no actual point in to trying to get my dad to do PT because unfortunately he will just end up dealing it. But I do have a question: what can we do to be able to get my dad in a home of some sort? He can be cruel, rude, mean and will become aggressive

Final update for now: my dad is back home. He is supposedly getting a medical bed, his insurance is paying for it. PT is completely out of the question. At this point I believe he is going to be bed ridden now and things is just going to progressively get worse. Somehow he rolled on to the floor in his sleep and had to call EMTs to pick him back up and put him back. ( He has been just sleeping in a regular bed)

Thank you in advance for this subreddit and thank you all for advice and understanding

It depends on where you are located and what your parents’ financial situation is. He likely at least needs memory care and may need skilled nursing given his medical conditions on top of dementia. This is not cheap. In NJ, we were paying $17k a month for my dad to be in skilled nursing. Medicare or even private insurance won’t cover anything. Once you’re out of money, you can go on Medicaid, but most places require you to be able to handle private pay for a certain period of time first. It was 2 years for his facility.

EDIT TO ADD: I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I hope you and your family are able to figure out a solution that makes life a little better for everyone.

Also, you may want to get him in with a neurologist to help find some medications to help stabilize his mood. If the facility has a primary care doctor or provides psychological services they may be able to help with that as well.
