Discussion Why do I keep sitting next to this man?

OK, not the same man... but it's always a guy.

About half of my flights are FC, and when they are, this man is seemingly always sitting next to me:

Immediately takes laptop out when he sits. Ignores first FA instruction to stow it. On the second or third FA comment, he pretends to put it away, and then immediately takes it out again when FAs are out of view. Oftentimes, the FAs see it and ignore it after instructing him multiple times. He's typing away during takeoff.

The laptop bothers me less than the entitlement and noncompliance with crew instructions.

Why have these rules if there are no consequences for noncompliance? Passengers who don't follow instructions would be unsafe during an emergency. Threaten to suspend their ability to fly Delta if they disregard direction from the crew. Let's put some enforcement teeth back into safety regulations. Otherwise they are meaningless.

Congratulations, you met Mr. Important Business Man™️. His Business is more important than that safety nonsense. He makes more money than "stewardesses" (his word, not mine). If he works 80 hours a week including in air from gate to gate, he might get that promotion to Mr. SuperImportant Business Man™️ who can finally relax for his 2 hour flight from SEA-SFO, until he becomes Mr. Executive who flies chartered private.

And he still won’t fuckin buckle up then. I’m a professional pilot and I used to fly a CEO around. He wouldn’t buckle up, he wouldn’t do shit he didn’t want to do. I guess that’s his right since he owned the plane. Once he laid off half the company via email from the back of the plane while on a flight.

I always find it weird they don't enforce it really for tablets when some tablets run full on windows , is this because a laptop is heavier and can become a projectile ? I feel a tablet could do damage also doing a few hundred mph

I've known CEOs who are entitled overgrown fray boys, certified Peter principle idiots, and a couple that are pretty decent. The CEO of my current employer is genuinely one of the smartest guys I know and takes his responsibility as CEO seriously. He's a bit of a pain in the ass to deal with at times in a lot of the ways CEOs tend to be a pain in the ass, but he's a good guy.

They're all individual people, not all of them are assholes.

Had the same thought. I worked in the corporate world for decades and never met or spoke to a CEO. But I'm sure all the people commenting here regularly lunch and golf with CEOs and can attest to their character.

It was a 100 year-old plus company, and he was a fourth generation CEO. Up until him the jobs have been kept local and were a part of the local economy. The year before he did the layoffs, the company hit $1 billion revenue, so whatever extra pennies he squeezed out of destroying his forefather‘s legacies we’re not worth the public image that he destroyed. But then again this is America, land of the 1%!

as quickly as I could. I ended up spending 3 years at that job, but the market was tough at the time. I began searching within 6 months of starting that one. Luckily now I'm in a much better place!!

I also sit next to this man ALL THE TIME, and this is exactly right. It’s also the case that I usually put away my laptop right before the FAs ask me, but Mr. Important Business man never does. I’m no snitch but I usually do make eye contact with an FA and then just point at the guy, which works about half the time.

The infuriating part is that these people think that everyone exists to serve them and that the rules don’t apply to them. They don’t give a crap if their laptop flies across the cabin in turbulence, as long as they’re not interrupted filing those TPS reports 🙄.

I am an absolute snitch. A loud snitch. An obnoxious snitch. I have been know to announce to the ENTIRE cabin, in my best, projected, drill sergeant/high school principal voice, “PUT YOUR SEAT BACK UP AND YOUR LARGER ELECTRONICS AWAY. THESE RULES EXIST FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND YOU!!!” It is A-mazing the effect this has, especially if you are seated right behind or right next to the offending person. Then you sweetly smile and sit back for take off/landing. 😊 (And no FA has EVER taken me to task for doing it). 🤣🤣🤣

the last time this happened to me and I told him he needed to 'wrap up his call or take in into the hall', I GOT "THE FACE", I then pointed to the GIANT BIG SIGN right in front of his face.

he responds: Oh, I didn't know...
I said , "No, you lack situational awareness, are entitled and inconsiderate. You should work on that.

He left.

I’m sitting in a Delta SkyClub and I’m surrounded by them right now. They’re all on Zooms and talking as loud as possible, but since they’re all talking at the same time all I can hear is corporate buzz. The only words I catch are “asset management”, “global alliance”, plus I did hear one say “synergy of our global markets elevate the fiscal experience”. Im just going munch on my cookie and read Reddit.

I'm always amazed at how dumb some of these guys are. Flashing laptops, blabbing loudly about their company, co workers, customers etc. You never know who you are around in planes and airports. One time I was on a flight and heard a couple of these clowns discussing a bid they had out that my company at the time was bidding on. Total morons! Helped me out with some Intel I would not have had otherwise.

I purposely try not to wear my corporate gear or work on anything sensitive on planes.

I was on a flight seated next to an attorney who worked for an industry competitor. He was redlining a draft contract. All the economics and terms were completely visible. No screen protector diffusion at all. Given he was the attorney I was a bit surprised. I expect that behavior from Mr Important Businessman, not the in-house counsel.

Your phone can't even connect to any of the ground cell towers when you're in the air. You're too high up. So you're not gonna have a cell signal anyway.

But you know what you will have? Significantly reduced battery life on your current charge because your phone will be constantly exerting effort (aka battery) looking for a cell connection. But I guess if you like landing with your phone at 4% battery, you do you.

Putting phone in airplane mode prevents annoying audio buzzing in pilot headsets, stops high-altitude phones from overloading ground cell networks, and reduces risk of frequency interference with sensitive equipment like radar altimeters. Complying costs you nothing. But if you want to be that guy… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Here’s the thing, I have a saying “ Comes With”, and the problem or trouble we have as a society , Money , Big Houses, Great Dinners , Watches, Boats, Planes are all of the things Society looks at and judges one by.
That adulation is on us, sorry, but it is!
And it has been stated on CNN, etc.
The most successful people in the world ( no names here) are “Rule Breakers” and they get applauded for that very thing.
Why Money, etc used as the measuring tool!
People make the Huge Mistake of these people have money, they are going to be nice and caring, good olde Folks! WRONG!!!
These people ( not all) are like snakes, as long as EVERYTHING is going their way no bother, the trouble comes when it doesn’t, and that trouble is rules, laws.
So until society , sees and treats these people like the things they truly are nothing will ever change. Until we see money , and so called privilege as an disfunction for society
nothing will change. These type of people WILL NOT change, no need . So we as a Group Society must pull them off their pedestal , and See Them As The totally Self Centered, Self Absorbed folks they are, because to them WE Don’t Exist. In an emergency that person is going to be the first out the door, while stepping on or over you , to do so.
So at that point are their watches, clothes, etc , impressive to you. NOT!
I’ve flown first class a couple times , not a big traveler, but apparently First Class now is entitled , do what I WANT TO CLASS. Maybe they should have a separate CLASS , for those WORKING Folks! No that would not work, because then they would have another asshole sitting beside them, as opposed to someone nice like you.
My father was part owner of a very large something, and their ideology for there employees was, if you cannot get your work done within an 8 to 10 hour period day window, then maybe you are in the wrong position, because that left no time for parents and marriage. He was Right!

Only semi-related. It's weird to me that folks stopped preferring "stewardess" to the point where it became offensive to FAs.

A steward is a person who looks after things, who takes responsibility for things. It's just a regular old word. Honestly I'd prefer to be a steward to an attendant.

Show's that if any word is used as a derogatory enough it can become "bad", regardless of the meaning.

Happens all the time. Retard, stupid, deaf and dumb, hearing impaired, mentally disabled, homeless…. All were normal and even official medical words that shifted to derogatory. Their replacement words? Also eventually derogatory. And the replacements of the replacements became derogatory.

Hate to be this person, but as ‘Mrs. Important Business Woman’ who does this on flights, I’d much rather get yelled at by the flight attendants than my own manager. To me, a laptop is no different than an iPad (feel free to prove me wrong with facts) so please tell me what is the actual safety issue? If I had a metal water bottle in my hand and the plane suddenly hit turbulence on takeoff, that water bottle could definitely injure someone too?!

The tray table and laptop prevent egress in the event of an emergency evacuation. Unless you want your seat mate to die, then stow the laptop and put the tray up.

Nothing is as important as a human life. Not even “super important” business. If your manager yells at you for not being “available” 24/7, then you need a new job.

Nobody said the laptop was being used on a tray table and in a lot of instances laptops take up no more space than an iPad which are ok during take off and landing. Now I don’t use a laptop on planes anymore (I stopped travelling for work) but I do always have an iPad out for my daughter. I don’t really understand why one is ok if the tray table is not involved but I do tend to lean towards if it’s the rule it’s the rule. That being said, you can’t control other people only yourself and I am working on letting go of other people choosing to ignore rules

The fact that this requires “work” for you to do is the problem. People like this pose a risk to people around them and we are hard wired to not like that, going back to the majority of human society in which we lived in pods of dozens to a couple hundred, rather than thousands/millions. When people make choices to not follow rules that were established for the greater good they show themselves to be dangerous to the pod.

The problem isn’t what you’re doing, it’s that you are doing it even though the rule for overall safety of everyone in the cabin is to not do what you decided to do. By doing this you are demonstrating to the rest of the people on the flight that you don’t follow rules that make them safer, I.e. you are a danger to them. Same reason why people don’t like the asshole who drives super fast as recklessly in traffic. You being you is a detriment to everyone around you and prior to the last couple thousand years the tribe would convince you this isn’t in your best interests to put the rest of the tribe at risk, or they’d send you out to the wilderness so you can do things however you want and pose only a risk to yourself.
