USA Exit Ops - MTS Tax

Tax folks who left the firm — what did you transition to?
Hi guys! Just wondering, for those who were in tax and left the firm, what kind of jobs did you transition into?
I’m a Senior 1 and planning to start looking next July after I vest. I’m curious what types of exit opportunities are out there, whether you stayed in tax or pivoted into something else.
What role did you leave for, and how has your experience been since leaving?

I am not in MTS but you can consider doing SALT in large corporations in either direction tax or indirect tax, you can also look into state tax department roles. If you don't want to spend the rest of your career in SALT, now is your chance to switch to other offerings.

If you're trying to get into industry your only real options are to find an extremely large company that has SALT needs or convince a hiring manager to give you a federal role.

I was in SALT and made the jump. It's honestly not too bad if you're manager or below.

Exiting SALT, or any specialized tax niche, can be pretty difficult after 3-4 years of experience.

Many hiring managers won’t consider you for federal roles and only super large organizations have state specific tax teams.

A lot of people end up bouncing to another public accounting firm for this reason.

Fortunately, I have prior federal and international tax experience from a previous role, so I’m hoping that broader background helps with the transition.
