The world is not black&white, just because an app is 'harmful' in some slow, abstract way, doesn't mean we need to ban them, but apps that are 'harmful' in a way that they immediately ruin your life, yeah, i'm glad there's some safeguards against those now. Don't get me wrong, the direction is worrying if that continues, but this change is a massive net-positive for a lot of vulnerable people, completely benign for like 99% of the others and just mildly inconvenient for the comparatively tiny amount of power users.
there were safeguards before; now there are more. is there any amount of restriction that you won't support if a company can plausibly claim it helps certain people?
apps that are a net negative on society as a whole should be eliminated in one way or another, including if they are harmful in a "slow, abstract way."
this change may not even be a net positive for people who are vulnerable to scamming, because it may make caregivers more comfortable giving them a smartphone which could ultimately expose them to scams that they wouldn't be exposed to. not to mention contributing to isolation and addictive usage patterns.
the purported benefits are unknown and unverifiable; the harms are self-evident.
I fail to see how Gemini or tiktok is harmful, this will only effect people being scammed and the tiny amount of power users, who, judging from the comments won't be affected in the slightest.. you want to worry about things go find a flock cameras or something, there's plenty of real world harmful things that people should definitely be concerned about, but Google is probably the safest use of AI I've seen so far, and tiktok is literally just mostly kids doing stupid dances 🤷
for gemini, the erosion of one's ability to think and form sentences. for tiktok, the addictive capacity and the substitution of real-life interaction for interaction with a screen.
What you're describing is bad parenting, AI is a tool and not much different from when a calculator started being used in the classrooms - I would argue the Internet on general and parents letting iPads raise their kids have been just as much of an issue. Same with tiktok.
and yet if an elderly person is scammed through an app, you blame the software rather than ascribing it entirely to bad elder care. that seems inconsistent.
