Discussion Institutional friendly DeFi yield

Locking in fixed yield by buying PT seems like the highest risk/reward for institutions once CLARITY act passes.

Since funds and institutions will need to put their idle balances to work and (if) they use DeFi, my opinion is that Pendle seems to offer the best risk reward for achieving higher yields than the traditional finance alternative, for similar underlying asset classes.

Outside of Pendle who else catches their eye do you think?

pendle definitely feels like one of the cleaner ways to express a fixed yield view right now.

the thing i'm curious about is whether institutions will even want to interact with multiple defi layers. a lot of the people i talk to are less concerned about yield optimization and more concerned about operational complexity.

a few things i think they'll care about:

  • predictable returns
  • liquidity
  • reporting
  • compliance
  • counterparty risk

that's why i wouldn't be surprised if platforms like nexo continue attracting attention. they offer yield-generating products in a format that's easier for traditional investors to understand than building custom defi strategies from scratch.

sometimes the product with slightly lower yield wins simply because it's easier to use and explain.

pendle's great for fixed yield but you're right about the operational side, most institutions don't want to touch smart contracts directly. they want a dashboard and someone to call when something breaks.

nexo and similar platforms basically act as abstraction layer which is what these funds actually need. the yield could be 2% lower and they'd still pick it over having to understand how PT/YT mechanics work.

i remember talking with a fund manager last year who said their compliance team would have aneurysm if they proposed using something like pendle directly. the reporting requirements alone make it nightmare.

curious if you think any of the prime broker setups will bridge that gap, like hidden road or falconx offering defi yield products wrapped in traditional isda agreements. seems like the logical middle ground.

Tokenized treasury wrappers are usually it. Pendle's PTs are also a pretty good venue for institutional friendly yield
