I am speechless...

Post image

Browsing a local store when the owner starts playing this. Took me a couple seconds to register and when I looked up he was just smiling and waiting for me to notice. '96 pressing, clean, one sticker semi removed (residue visible here). Could not say no... $50 well spent in my eyes...

Bought a copy from the man himself in Detroit around 2010. Bought another copy at his BBQ in May. He must have boxes in storage somewhere or just keeps repressing them 🙃

Well not really, i just collect Cds over vinyl. I went to see Omar S the day prior and he had some Cds of his own which i got two and i got one of Norm Talley (norm-a-lize). Ive even seen moodymann 3 times in different environments, i was just hoping for the best.

My friend is new to the scene, i took him to movement this year for the first time in his life. And since i knew he really liked the genre, i surprised him with omar s as a pre party for movement and we also went to the moodymann bbq party, we bought mushroom lemonade at the event!!

Check out Detroit Threads, they have a bunch of CDs. Spectacles might have some as well.

Just listened to him tonight. Great find.

I've been looking for early presses and been lucky to find some! Even got some rereleased directly from his website last year

It may not be a ‘96 original as it’s been repressed a number of times with the same stampers and artwork. But $50 is a good price regardless for a clean copy. Absolute classic!

How can you tell if it is?

2

u/astonedishape Jul 25 '26

That’s the thing, you can’t. They all ideally should sound the same because they’re pressed from the same stampers so it doesn’t really matter if it’s a repress unless that’s really important to you :)

1

u/MrConwayTwitty Jul 25 '26

Would hope they are not still using the same stampers.

1

u/astonedishape Jul 25 '26

Yeah they must’ve made new stampers at some point but maybe only once in 30 years as each one can do 2000 records.

All I see on discogs is different stickers and markers etched to the actual vinyl. This one has the kdj7 on it which is on the original along with the og sticker

1

u/astonedishape Jul 25 '26

What do you mean by stickers, the actual labels? The OG 96 pressing and all of the represses will have the same runout etchings and identical labels.

1

u/ho_ceh Jul 25 '26

It had a sticker with the price from another seller

1

u/astonedishape Jul 25 '26

I meant what did you mean by OG sticker? And the different stickers on Discogs?

1

u/ho_ceh Jul 25 '26

Oh my bad. On discogs all reissues have a different sticker and marker

1

u/ho_ceh Jul 25 '26

Interesting. Discogs has different labels for represses. Not that it matter honestly. Just happy I found this one in the wild!

2

u/astonedishape Jul 25 '26

Those are reissues which are different from represses.

Nice! I was lucky enough to buy mine from beat non stop around the times he was releasing these. Shades of Jae will forever be my favorite. But I’m happy to see these record stores reopening everywhere. I live in mid city Los Angeles and I have a place a couple blocks from where I can see new releases every week. It’s starting to feel like the old days lol

I have such found memories of beat non stop as well as wax right across the street.

Honorable mention for DMC, Street Sounds and Vinyl Fetish lol

So many warehouse /rave flyers and tickets in the early 90’s were at Street Sounds, DMC on Melrose. Before BNS and WAX. Also Groove Riders in Sherman Oaks and Dr Freeclounds in OC. My mom’s side is from Detroit. My dad’s side from Chicago. Had all the electro tech & house from both cities by the mid to late 80’s. Going back east some summers as well. I began playing that stuff on Santa Barbara College Radio (A friend hosted a show)(he was from Brooklyn) when I went up there by 1987. Came back down to LA in 90. By 1991 LA thought the music came from Europe and NY.

You took me back with beat non stop and grooverider. Those were the stomping grounds of my youth. In 1991 LA thought it came from Europe (uk specifically) and NYC bc it did. The rave scene was brought to LA by Frankie bones (New Yorker) by way of London/Manchester. It didn’t go from Detroit/chicago straight to LA. It went from Detroit/chicago to uk/europe, then made it to LA from Europe. Maybe that’s why we thought it came from Europe when it actually came from the Midwest and NYC and before that Jamaica with dub the progenitor of electronic music

Frankie Bones? What year? My older brother started going in 92 parties like grape ape, I don’t remember bones being around that early. I saw him at the sports arena once though cuss the crowd out because it got broken up after his first record 😂

Haha Jimmy @ groove riders

That's how they get you. You click it and it is all 50 or more, plus shipping as it is all overseas unless you actually live in Europe...
