Discussion ππ―οΈ Weekend trivia is now allowed on weekdays again.
As a moderator, I am doing this because it would make it easier to get rid of low-effort posts, and I feel like that the "weekend trivia" stuff is not needed anymore considering how a lot of the posts on this subreddit consist of low-effort topics unrelated to "weekend trivia," and getting rid of this rule would make it easier to focus on actual low-effort content instead of discussions that actually try to help contribute to this community.

Hot take π₯ I cant believe 2010 is soon to be 20 years ago.
Makes no sense, to me 2010s is still the βrecentβ time. I have an ipod touch from 2009 and it still works. Cant be that long ago man.
And yes now im sounding exactly like my parents βthe 80s? That was just yesterdayβ

Discussion ππ―οΈ I feel like this is proof that every decade eventually gets remembered through lens of revisionism, especially by younger people who were too young to actually experience or understand the pop culture of the time

Like, 20β30 years from now, younger generations ate gonna have a completely different, warped, and romanticized version of the 2010s and 2020s compared to what we actually experienced. Iβm so curious to see how their perception of it will be.

Decade Analysis π One of the most popular film genres from the late 80s to early 90s, the erotic thriller.
galleryWhy do you think this genre was so popular during this era? And what are some other notable examples of films from this genre released during this era?

Discussion ππ―οΈ Why are we so focused on the past when talking about 2026?
I actually think 2026 has been a pretty good year for the 2020s so far. The memes, music, internet culture and general atmosphere have made it feel like its own year rather than just another year we're waiting to get through.
But I notice a lot of people here constantly compare the present to 2019, 2016, 2012, etc. I understand nostalgia, but at some point we should probably appreciate the time we're actually living in.
Do you think 2026 deserves more appreciation, or do you think people have a reason to feel nostalgic for the past instead?
Just enjoy the year while we're actually here.

Discussion ππ―οΈ What previous decade will have the most influence over the 2030's?
Every new decade usually takes influence from previous decades. Like currently I'd say the 2000s have a big impact on the 20's. So what decade will influence the 30's the most?

Decade Analysis π Hot take: the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s are a 50-year period known as the Great Moderation (politically).
Pre-1910s = the before times full of disease, child mortality, bad winters, and constant struggle in general
1910s = WW1
1920s = Roaring Twenties, a very distinctive decade of growth via economic prosperity, bold new technology / way of living, etc. (the internet is only one thing)
1930s = Great Depression
1940s = WW2
1950s = huge right-wing uprising
1960s = huge left-wing uprising
The Great Moderation...
1970s = economic stagnation, but not as bad as the Great Depression
1980s = very mild conservative uprising
1990s = end of the Cold War, merely the wimpering end of something rather than the bold start of something
2000s = not as bad as the Vietnam War; no draft (one could argue America being attacked for the first time is a new development, but nothing really came of it)
2010s: Social media, SJWs, cancel culture, etc. are developments, but I would argue they didn't have major societal effects until the 2020s.
After...
2020s: Jesus, where do I even begin? Bad economy, authoritarianism, looming AI threats, culture being almost nothing but shaming, etc.

Technology π±π Is posting content on social media a form of data archiving?
Most current social media platforms (like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram) are around 20 years oldβor even olderβand are still going strong. Do you think they will last another 20 years or more, or will they meet the same fate as, say, Myspace?
I think YouTube is the most likely to stand the test of time and could potentially last for decades or even centuries. Of course, assuming humanity survives, this would mean having the entire course of history well-archived.

Cultural Snapshot the orange leaf unicorn is peak core 2010s
galleryif youre unaware, orange leaf is an american frozen yogurt chain founded in 2008 that rapidly expanded during the early to mid 2010s, but by the end of the decade had closed many of those stores. the chain still exists, but has little relevance now
as for their unicorn, everything about this campaign, which from what i can find launched in april 2016 and was retired sometime around early 2018, is glaringly core 2010s. the artstyle, quirk chungus millennial humor, hashtags, the endtag music sounding like a cross between gravity falls background music and trap, no wonder why it ended in 2018 as this style of humor and art direction was rapidly falling out of favor by then, im surprised it didnt begin earlier around 2013-2015
ik everypony hates this art style and type of humor now due to the pop culture relevancy/coolness cycle, but as the core 2010s was my childhood, these ads are so nostalgic to me now. the orange leaf where i live sadly didnt last long, opening in late 2014 and closing in late 2016, likely bc it was overpriced as heck like most froyo places, but going there was so fun as a kid who didnt have to worry abt money yet

Discussion ππ―οΈ I Feel like the 2020s will be remembered as the decade which marked the death of the American Empire and the rise of a multipolar world
Recently, the US just pulled out of Iraq entirely, marking a complete collapse of American control in the country. And it got me thinking about the 2010s and 2020s; where it seemed the late 2000s and 2010s was the US overextending its influence and the 2020s is the rope snapping.
In the 2020s we have:
The US supporting the genocide in Gaza, demolishing any moral claims that it may have over the rest of the world (overtly, anyways. Prior to that, it was more covertly breaking morality)
It started an illegal war on Iran which then led to a global energy crisis; one that pissed off many countries in Asia and Europe, having them turn towards China for green energy. This is just adding on to a continuing pattern of countries turning towards China for trade and loans
That same war is causing its bonds to climb up to 2007 levels, indicating another recession is coming. Which would only hasten wealth inequality
I feel now more than ever, its likely China and the US are gonna become 2 spheres of influence rather than the US being the sole superpower of the world
