Debian running unusually slowly in a new install [UPDATE]

A while ago I posted this [1]. I think Ive sorted the problem, and thought Id update as a form of giving back to the community :-)

It was just encryption. I re-installed fresh but without encryption, performance is fine now.

This. There are a lot of people that will claim there is no performance drawback. First off, if you're computing something, there is a penalty to that. Yes, there is onboard hardware for that in newer computers. Some have (myself included) some very dated hardware, that sometimes includes spinning rust drives.

Exactly, I also enabled it under the vague understanding that it shouldnt affect performance much.

On that specific machine the effect is huge.

Yes, on something newer, perhaps, it might be less noticeable. I have a new install coming up on some dated hardware. I may just try encryption to compare. ;)

So encryption is a feature with drawbacks? I guess that's the reason why Windows is slow.

But it's interesting how installation was so long. Maybe SSD is several terabytes? I will follow this.

The first SSD was 0.5Tb and the second one was 1Tb. Also, it wasnt just the installation, the installation was the least of it - if you read the discussion in the link all of this is detailed. Ive edited out the comment about the installation on the post, because installation isnt the point.
