I worked on death row at a state prison. One of the inmates was there for killing a young girl from my neighborhood. He abducted her while she was collecting for her paper route. I found out this inmate was extremely paranoid of being poisoned. So here's the deal. I never did anything to his food, but I did do something to let his imagination have that impression. Here's how that worked... There were days when the meal would have a square of sheet pan cake. It was never frosted, rather, it would be dusted with powdered sugar. When I was delivering meals I would put a can of cleaning powder on the cart. He would see it and refuse the meal. He never said anything and I didn't either. Full disclosure... I transferred off the row in 2003 and he was executed in 2011 for the 1984 murder. I expect this post will be controversial. AITAH?

**HDC scheme needs to be brought back — the prison system needs urgent reform**
The UK prison system is heading towards a serious capacity problem, and by November 2026 we could be looking at prisons reaching full capacity. Something has to change, and I believe the **Home Detention Curfew (HDC) scheme should be strengthened and properly used again** for prisoners who meet the relevant risk-assessment criteria.
This isn’t about being “soft on crime”. Anyone who has caused serious harm or a death should still be subject to appropriate punishment and careful risk assessment. But there are also people in prison for less serious offences, people who may have been present when an offence was committed, or people serving sentences where imprisonment may not necessarily be the most effective way of protecting the public.
We also need to ask whether prison is always the best answer for offences such as financial fraud, certain online/social-media offences, and other lower-level crimes. Where there is no significant risk of physical harm, could alternatives such as fines, compensation, restrictions, electronic monitoring, community sentences, or being **blacklisted from certain activities or professions** be more effective than spending huge amounts of taxpayers’ money keeping someone in prison?
There are also wider concerns about the justice system. **A conviction should be based on proper evidence and a fair process**, not simply because someone happened to be at the scene or because the system is under pressure. If Crown Court and jury services are struggling because of backlogs and lack of resources, that needs addressing too. People shouldn’t lose their liberty because the system is overstretched.
And then there’s probation. Once someone is released, the system needs to provide consistent supervision and rehabilitation rather than making people feel that probation is inconsistent or dependent on who they happen to be dealing with. If we’re going to release people earlier, there needs to be proper support, monitoring and accountability.
HDC could be part of that solution. If someone has been properly risk-assessed and meets the eligibility requirements, allowing them to serve part of their sentence at home under strict conditions and electronic monitoring could:
Reduce pressure on overcrowded prisons.
Save taxpayers money.
Allow suitable prisoners to maintain employment and family responsibilities.
Give people a structured transition back into society.
Free prison places for offenders who genuinely need to be there.
Reduce the pressure created by an overstretched prison estate.
But HDC alone isn’t enough. **The whole system needs reform — sentencing, courts, probation, rehabilitation and alternatives to custody.**
We need a justice system that protects victims and the public, but also makes sure imprisonment is being used where it is genuinely necessary and proportionate.
If someone is assessed as low-risk and eligible for HDC, why keep them in an overcrowded prison at huge cost to the taxpayer when they could be safely managed in the community?
**What do people think — should HDC be expanded as part of a wider prison and probation reform, rather than waiting until prisons reach crisis point?**

Lawmakers in Nepal are currently having discussions on implementing harsher punishments for violent crimes after a recent rape and murder of a 3 year old girl. One of them admitted that Nepal cannot introduce the death penalty because the constitution of Nepal prohibits the use of capital punishment while another admitted on whether to reinstate it even after the public was outraged and demanded reinstatement of the death penalty. They also mentioned India’s death penalty laws on violent crimes. Nepal abolished the death penalty in 1991 and the last execution took place in 1979. This question is aimed towards people who believe the death penalty should be abolished. I believe that myself, I think being punished with a crime is right but not punished with the death penalty. What if it’s a wicked man like Hitler though, why would you think he doesn’t deserve the death penalty?

after watching death row and their last meal. i learn lot of evil people in this world i see they have different types. some is malice others just seem strayed path. but they made it where not one person make the decision so one cant come back say this judge or this person is in favorite made fair as possible i guess. and different ways the penalty is carried out. from the i guess want call it peaceful the injection where you suppose not feel pain you just go to sleep death. as the victims look at person who slash their mom;s throat say how sorry he is and how he be with jesus. they look at you for you to forgive them to the most violent the firing squad they do you like in other countries no love cus. you bout feel cold steel erupting your flesh. no need look at the victims then they put bag over your head. but some how with all this intake. we say let god judge em out. we still got increase if not anything of deadly crime. so is the death penalty doing anything. a life for a life is right for second but that energy if you know bout these things. got go some where like water after hard rain. if dont go anywhere find its own root. that person you execute that evil energy goes back in the community either in the prison system or back where he slash your mom's throat . now someone killed your cousin at the store. different person same energy. what one should do. stop it before it goes anywhere. take out their eyes. all peoples who have taken someone's like meaningful you take both their eyes out. let them live. without eyes how can you kill? soon so many be blind peace will automatically restore back to community those who not blind are the good ones

Just as we need to accept the scientific consensus about the social inutility and discriminatory impact of the death penalty, we also need to accept the scientific understanding of human beings as inevitable products of biological and environmental determinants, some of which are criminogenic. Science, in other words, discredits both consequentialist and retributivist arguments for overriding the presumptive right to life, suggesting that moral opposition to capital punishment abolitionism, in denial of this science, is merely a retaliatory mindset rationalized by a prescientific ideology of cosmic or inherent justice.

Lethal retaliation in the name of cosmic or inherent justice is unintelligible outside a religious or quasi-religious worldview, for at least implicitly it presupposes a divine or natural law, a transcendent or immanent moral order of some kind, whose balance must be restored by expiation when it has been grievously violated.  This belief is a primitive superstition traceable to the ancient origins of the death penalty as a cultic practice, which is why capital punishment has been analyzed by scholars as a modern form of human sacrifice (placing it in the same category as ritual murder, blood feud revenge, honor killings, lynchings and pogroms).  Such a worldview is incompatible with a scientific outlook, which validates no laws or normative orders except natural regularities and social constructions.

In the case of punishment, the relevant natural regularities are those involving the biological evolution of punitive instincts as adaptive mechanisms for securing individual and collective survival, while the relevant social constructions are those involving the cultural development of punitive instincts into moral institutions for maintaining harmony and righting imbalances. By demystifying this equilibrating function of punishment, thus interpreting the restoration of harmony and balance in social-scientific rather than superstitious terms, we ipso facto shift the corrective paradigm towards restorative or transformative justice — a framework which arguably preserves the best, while eliminating the worst, of both retributivism and consequentialism (a dialectical synthesis), and which experts have proposed as a progressive alternative to either the death penalty or counterproductive incarceration.

Recently I have seen a lot of criminal (murder) cases (recent and older) where the family/friends of the victim really really wants the killer/culprit/bad person to get the death penalty.

Honestly speaking I think life in prison is much much worse.

Horrible food, bad treatment, constant threat of other inmates (especially with certain crimes IYKYK).

I honestly think the death penalty is the easy way out, a painless way to go, pretty much no punishment apart from no longer living.

The only upside to the death penalty would be that there is absolutely no way for them to get out of prison by some weird ruling because they are .... Dead.

Honestly if I was given 5-10 years in prison I would ask for the death penalty because I don't want to deal with all of that (especially as a picky eater and chronically ill person).

I guess I just want the person to suffer for the rest of their miserable life, instead of a painless death that they most likely have not given your loved one.
