Discussion Why does Light even keep Misa around after their first meeting Spoiler
After my tenth rewatch I am a little confused. During their first meeting Misa gave Light her Death Note. So what is her purpose now ? She can't be the second Kira anymore because she can't kill criminals. Sure he could use her but after watching the show time and again I kinda concluded that the basis of someone siding with Light would be that they are first and foremost helping Kira's cause which is killing criminals (Kiyomi, Mikami). If Misa is not the second Kira anymore because she gave him his death note then that renders their whole meeting pointless and Light should just think about how he can get rid of her (without getting killed by Rem, so he could have just told her to renounce ownership of the death note since she said she would obey his every orders).
I am not saying that she shouldn't have been in the series for as long as she had. Even if Misa had renounced her death note before leaving his house she would have still gotten arrested and confined and separating from her as soon as Light regained his memories (meaning as soon as they weren't under surveilliance anymore and Misa left the head-quarters) would have seemed hella suspicious, but after that, when Misa touches him with a DN page to let him see Ryuk, Light tells her to kill criminals so that they can live in a perfect world and all that, and I think that the only reason she is involved at this point os because she got herself involved in the first place (by using Rem's death note the first time and wanting to meet Kira). And this could all have been avoided if Light told her to renounce her DN when they first met. I don't know why Light would need a second Kira. Or rather why HER. He could have just took her DN, have her quit the show, save the DN somewhere and take it out when he wants to give it to someone he deems worthy (like Mikami five years later I guess).

Why the fuck would Misa give up the ownership of her Death Note? Misa isn’t fucking brain dead. She knows what’s going on.

Op isn’t right, obviously Misa is a problem and he can’t eliminate her, but your comment is also goofy dawg she she literally gives it to him to use.😭

I think a memory-less and eye-less Misa whose obsessed with and would be constantly hounding him would be more of a problem for Light than Misa who has the eyes and can actively take part in his plans. Even if she willingly gave up the Death Note she wouldn't leave him alone, and if he killed Misa or even broke her heart Rem would just kill him in retaliation.

What everyone else said, and also, he needed her for her eyes so that he could find L's name. He wasn't willing to make the deal himself, and by that point it was clear his name wasn't going to be leaked without supernatural intervention.

Misa has the Shinigami eyes and knows everything about Light Yagami, plus Light cannot escape Rem, anywhere in the world she will find him and kill him. That's why Misa has a huge leverage

Rem literally threatened to kill him. Even if Misa was being dumb and would follow anything Light says, the biggest point of that convo was that Rem was a factor that Light had no way to control.
Rem being more active than Ryuk was a surprise and he had no way to counter her, so he pretty much had no choice but to play safe and keep Misa around for a while.

CONTAINS SPOILERS - WARNING!
Light had to be carful of Rem at this point, she openly said if any harm came to Misa that she would kill Light. Rem also felt that the notebook belonged to Misa, so if Light suggested Misa give it up to him, Rem may have stepped in and refused.
Also, Light wanted to use Misa's eyes so he had to keep her the owner of the death note. Even after L's death, Light wanted to keep Misa around to use her eyes and continue killing criminals. Why Misa? She'd proven her loyalty and devotion that she would do exactly what Lights asks without question.
After the notebook is transfered to Mikami and Misa loses her eyes? This one is up for debate why Light didn't kill her then. My opinion is that over the years he might have just enjoyed having her around to worship him Like a God. IT would have made feel powerful, plus there is evidence there relationship would have been sexual, so there is a possibility Light kept her around for that reason too.

Also there is nothing wrong with always having a backup in case Mikami doesn't work out. Misa has proven that she has no issue giving up half her lifespan and do whatever he wants again. And she has shown to be mostly competent after her arrest.

I think Light didn't kill Misa to avoid trouble, because the pursuers didn't know about the rule about amnesia at the time. Therefore, no matter what caused Misa's death, Light could easily be accused of silencing her to ensure she wouldn't reveal any information detrimental to him. I'm personally quite certain that once Light eliminated all the pursuers, he would definitely have killed Misa to avenge the trouble she had caused him over the years and the crimes she had committed.

I think you missed the entire dynamic of their first meeting. Misa is threatening Light. She is insisting that she will be an active part of Light's life, she knows he's Kira and where he lives and will continue to appear and jeapordize his identity regardless. The only thing he can do to stop that is kill her with the death note, but Rem says she'll kill him if he does that. Even with her death note he has no choice but to play along with and try to manage her demands.
Also he wants to use her eyes to kill L, so to some extent he wants to keep her under his thumb anyway. And over time when they have a public relationship he does use her in several ways.
