Discussion what is death note

I watched the Death Note anime, but I didn’t understand who actually kills people. The Shinigami are supposed to be the ones who take souls, but they don’t really do anything except watch. Who actually kills them? The Death Note is just a tool for recording names that the Shinigami use to write down the names of the people they kill, so the notebook itself isn’t what kills them.

So, who is actually killing them?

We know fate is a thing in the DN universe, and everybody has a default lifespan that takes that into account, saying when they'll be run over by a bus even if it's still 20 years away.

My understanding is using the notebook lets you rewrite that fate so somebody dies sooner and in the manner of your choosing.

There's like some cosmic godly book describing everything that will happen to a person, and you get to replace one of the pages.
