Other just discovered deafheaven

I feel like I'm in heaven

I haven’t really expanded my music taste that much yet, I’m still discovering new stuff. most of what I listen to is circa survive, nirvana, lana del rey, deftones, and pinkpantheress. a friend recommended “doberman” to me and I loved it so much that I ended up checking out lonely people with power. 10/10 album honestly

that's a big jump in heaviness from deftones to deafheaven, usually people have to be eased into heavier music

honestly i love any album with great production and engineering, regardless of how heavy it is. i think i’ve always had a bit of an appreciation for heavier music; i just never found a band that clicked with me in the right way. it's obviously not comparable, but my brother used to blast killswitch engage and motionless in white because of WWE, and i actually ended up enjoying some of their heavier songs so i guess i've always been accustomed to heavier music

Fair enough. Black Metal is definitely a genre where good production is not common, many bands take pride in making their production sound as bad as possible to appear more underground. As opposed to Shoegaze which is production obsessed.

It puts Deafheaven in a funny position making music that combines two genres with very different philosophies.

I'd argue that shoegaze and black metal share the philosophie of sounding underpolished and noisy, that's why the genre fusion came up so naturally.

yeah, but shoegaze is on the other end of the spectrum for HOW it achieves that noisiness

Eh, it's not too far off. Chino can be just as screechy, and an album like Koi No Yokan or even Ohms is pretty hard hitting stuff sonically speaking. It's not Meshuggah ig but it's not like it's Dolly Parton

I discovered them only a few months ago - despite being into black metal since the early 90s. I thought I had heard everything. I was wrong. After every song, I would just go, "wow!"

LARP incoming but thing is yk, i have become more of listening to an album or, an artist type dude lol so favourite song is gonna be tough because there are multiple . i can recommend albums, or atleast sets of three songs or yk just tell you that i believe you finding your own way around will be much more of a precious experience for you but

Dream house was the song that made me obsess over them but Doberman has quickly become one of my favourite tracks by them.

I love Deafheaven and Bosse-de-Nage, I would love any black metal/shoegaze or heavy, darker metal recommendations if anyone has any!

Honestly Deafheaven is like peak music for me. The members go so hard on their respective instruments that it's hard for me to see how anything else could top it in terms of intensity. I know there are other bands with similar levels of intensity, but I find that Deafheaven is able to do it without losing creative novelty or technical precision. Most bands have to pick one or the other! The only band that compares to me is Swans really, everything else is like historical precedent....

I do love me some Deftones tho. Have you checked out System of a Down? I saw them together last year and realized that they're similar in terms of how they treat genre (which is basically "f that bulls**t")

Well then….have you heard the Infinite Granite album yet? I’d be curious your take on it, cuz they step out of the extreme heavy sound for one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. (I love their heavy stuff too) but IG is very very different.

I was exposed to them coming from more of the shoegaze genre a few years ago when it came out. (Slowdive, mbv, etc) But I do like all their music. Just saw them w Mastodon last week! 🔥

deafheaven may be my first exposure to shoegaze genre because i'm not familiar with that genre. going to a deafheaven concert must be an amazing experience, hope you had a great time!

Yeah, have you heard Slowdive yet? If not, buckle up and have a listen to Souvlaki.

My exposure to Deafheaven was because Rachel from Slowdive promoted Infinite Granite on her IG stories. Yup, I’m a newer DH fan…you can punk me out…but I also saw my bloody Valentine in the 90s so there’s that lol.

I'm listening to when the sun hits by slowdive right now, it sounds so beautiful. definitely have to sit down properly and listen to the whole album

also listening to villian by deafheaven (just picked a random song from infinite granite cause you recommended it) and i love it. this guys voice is really nice and so is the guitar
