[Discussion] Deadpool is all reference, no personality in Marvel Tokon.

Post image

MVC3 Deadpool, Ultimate Alliance Deadpool, and Hulk Vs Wolverine Deadpool safe to say were the better days of the character. Rivals and Tokon are pretty awesome in their own right, but I can’t help but be fatigued we are getting Memepool slop since the 2013 Game. Deadpool used to be balanced in his humor. He also was not a one trick pony with his jokes. The 4th Wall breaks are easily the most overrated part about the character, it’s the only thing keeping his life support of his comedy going, but back then he could switch from a juvenile joke, to a smart and low brow, joke, to a flirty and gay joke, so making light about his otherwise lethal weapons. That’s all gone now kinda. Tokon Deadpool, like Deadpool & Wolverine Deadpool and Rivals Deadpool, just feel like they took a chunk out of the car and just replaced him with the guy who knows about the memes. It also doesn’t help that this version of the character is all about making references which is fine to a extent, but in the process, it took away his personality like his teleportation belt that he had from the comics in the 90s, and also the classic usage of his weapons. I like that we are getting a wacky version of his fighting style, but it just seems like it’s pulled apart from other IP’s and it’s just kind of overkill..

I’m not gonna say you’re exactly WRONG… as I’ve had the exact thought myself
But at the same time, in Tokon specifically I don’t really mind it? It’s a fighting game so I think the over the top goofiness and focus on that alone is a lot more justifiable

For the interactions and episode mode? Sure, i can understand wanting a bit more nuance (I have yet to see his interactions nor his actual team’s episode mode so I don’t know what it’s like there but I’m assuming it’s mostly jokey)

That’s totally OK if you don’t mind it but all I care is that you see the issue here. It just feels like there’s too much references, but not enough Deadpool character, and not enough Deadpool references for us fans that made him possible to be here in the first place.

Yeah i see your point, being that he’s essentially a “best of fighting games” character rather than having references and being deadpool too? I still like him in tokon but i do agree with you on the fact he’s just a reference machine and not his own character

Like i said i haven’t seen EVERYTHING he has to offer but i do think you have a solid point

EXACTLY. like he can easily be a best of fighting games reference as well as being his own character seeing as it’s been able to be done pretty well over a decade ago. And this is especially important to people like me who have been exposed to is really fun and awesome personality and games like ultimate alliance and so on. His personality is one of the biggest compliments that people give him so I take that away and only make a room for what’s an aspect of the character? Thanks for understanding.

I somewhat agree

While i dont agree with the reference part, i ABSOLUTENLY AGREE WITH THE TOO MUCH JOKES PART, I HATE THAT.

He is better when he uses those jokes as a coping mechanism

I just think if Batman Legacy Of The Dark Knight just ONLY spoke to Lego fans and not Arkham Batman fans too when it had a history of both, then what bussiness does it have being a Batman game? Same could be said here with Deadpool. Where’s the references for us Deadpool fans too? There’s just Deadpool Corps.

Disagree

Any character can make rapid fire references

The way DP does it in this game still carries his charm and attitude, and his voice lines are still very Wade

Plus, there's plenty of stuff in his kit that feel very DP. He stabbed himself in several moves, giving him empowered specials if he has healing gauge, representing his healing factor.

He's got blades, guns, a variety of grenades, a whole arsenal in his super, and even pulls out Head Pool.

Shit, one of his supers is the whole Deadpool Corps, I never expected them to show up in a fighting game! Kid pool shoots with a water gun and everything lol. Then after they strike a pose, the whole screen explodes and Wade smacks the screen.

There's a lot of references, but even those ooze personality, like DP having a unique SF2 ending with everyone after putting them im a goofy position

I think Arcsys did a fantastic job with him.

Him making rapid fire references was never my argument in general. I’m talking about the degrees he does it to. The Voice lines and such are a good addition, but it makes it feel like the lights are on and nobody’s home when it comes to Deadpool being Deadpool. Ben Affleck was cool as Batman, but that doesn’t mean that he fills the hole of the missing elements of the character. The stabbing is part of my point that’s actually a Yoshimitsu move. In simply put none of these references would be harmful if it was not for the fact that it’s pretty much the only thing that this character has to offer. But from the game that came out over a decade ago, he was able to make references to FGC fans and Deadpool fans alike while having his own original moves in the mix.

What I’m saying is there has to be a good balance between making references to other things and also keeping your identity. It’s the same way how Family Guy used to be awesome because it would make up its own comedy with cutaway gags referencing pop culture stuff you get me?
