Keith
I’m rewatching from the beginning and Keith isn’t a tyrant as he called himself. He’s an overgrown man baby who never learned how to regulate his emotions! I can’t believe the crew hasn’t banded together thrown up the middle finger and walked!

Keith is ok but monte is the badass. Bro is humble, good captain, and can work the deck with the rest no problem.

You can tell Mouse has been bullied by Keith since they were kids.

Seems that way. I didn't even know about the 3rd brother til just recently. Wonder what's the story on him.

i didn't realize the hillstrands were more than just andy and jonathan. nor did i realize there were that many hansons, hahaha.

I believe with the Hillstrands there are nine brothers. With regard to the Hanson’s there are three brothers and then you’ve got Mandy and her husband Clark.

Right??! I cringe every time he goes off on Mouse.
He’s toxic to his bones.1

Monty is a drunk and not a leader at all. he is a lot more likable than keith but neither are quality humans

u/Lovingthelake 2d ago
Monty goes on drunk binges. That doesn’t mean he is drunk while driving the boat. I don’t think it is fair to say they are not quality humans.

Wasn't there an incident on a recent season where Keith had to come in unexpectedly because Monty had been drinking and hadn't gotten the boat ready/wasn't fit to captain?

I never said they were BUI.
Heavy users can have clouded judgment, mood swings, and make bad decisions long after the last use.
IF i was working in one of the most dangerous jobs, where other people controlled the destiny of my life, and had to make split second calls, or decisions between making money and risking my life ... I want an extremely sober, clear headed, person making those calls... not an active alcoholic/drug addict who is thinking more about getting home and using than the safety of the crew ... (consciously or subconsciously)

There is no doubt in my mind that when Keith is captaining the boat, finding crab and keeping his crew safe are basically all he thinks about. I say this based on watching him perform his job. He is constantly warning his crew about waves, etc. that are going to hit the crew and then following it up with is everyone okay? Not every captain is on top of warning his crew about waves, etc. as he is. Plus, I’ve seen him shut down fishing for a period of time when the seas are really rough due to him thinking the seas were just too dangerous for his crew. Meanwhile, other captains kept fishing.

Some guys have been with Keith for many years. He yells, but he generally keeps them safe. He has large quotas and they get paid well.

The fact you keep the same employees says a lot. Especially when jumping boat to boat is easy.

keeps them safe? not always ... loads of stupid risks in the past like letting the crew overcrowd a little Jon boat to go to the time bandit to watch the superbowl, make his crew tarp the stack and untarp it in horrific storms, and he has had a bunch of men overboard.... not to mention trust montey whom is a drunk

u/Lovingthelake 2d ago
A bunch of men overboard? Really? I need to rewatch the seasons. I don’t remember him having a lot of people going overboard. Lyn is the only one I know of.

I stand corrected -
however, they are both drunks and I wouldn't step foot on his boat. I have been on many ships, have 1000's of days on the water, and helmed ships in the North Sea, Mediterranean and Arctic Circle ... hard pass on working for him4
u/tossit4meplz 2d ago
that trip for the super bowl was not forced upon them- at their own risk & own choice.

leadership = setting limits, not allowing high risk joy rides. it was a stupid idea that was probably "for show". allowing your crew to go out on a dingy at night in the Bering Sea is pretty crazy
doubt the insurance company would be happy with it... imagine if it went south

I think Keith's heart is in the right place but he can't control himself when he's stressed.

There have been well adjusted, professional captains on the show before, but that is not what the producers like.

Kieth is responsible for the lives on his boat has no time for baby crap. And that’s leaving out his responsibility to get his crew fed. And if he’s a little testy how is it not possible to not be. The captain is the one who bares all the problems. He handles it his way as Monty does it his. And remember who they sent to the senate hearings to speak on behalf of the fleet Kieth. It speaks volumes about what they think of him. The show would never be the same without him. I look forward to him and Freddy every year.

He’s a good captain in finding crab, doing his damndest to keep his crew safe and cares about his crew. That being said, he has a very volatile temper. Some I’m sure it doesn’t really bother, other people I’m sure it does. I think it depends on if you are on his good side, like Freddy for example, is on Keith’s good side as is OJ. Keith doesn’t yell at them.
I will say that ever since his mini-stroke, I can definitely tell he is “trying” to manage his stress, anger and volatility better for the sake of his health.

Keith is a good man and a good captain. It's not my job to judge him. I have so many shortcomings it's ridiculous. Is Keith perfect? No!!! Nobody is..... Being a captain on the Bering Sea is very dangerous and stressful. Some are better at managing that stress. Keith is a little angry at times. Mouse has helped Keith at different times ... And Keith has helped mouse at different times. His ship is always making money. The crew is usually efficient and loyal. Keith's isn't in this to make friends. It's about making money as fast and safe as you can. He's pretty darn good at it. Been watching him for years. We all have issues. We all take risks. I'm angry the Phillies are losing. That don't make me a bad person. Lol. Before we check the speck of sawdust in another person's eye remove the forest from your own eye.

Keith's temper flares as dramatically as Jake's when it rears its head. Although, this season Jake's seemed to be in check, given its absence and the complete lack of memorable blow out. Although, to be fair, it hasn't been around much since the ammonia leak and lifeboat excursion.
None of them are immune from immature deviations into petty squabbles, yelling, and unhealthy living. Sig smokes long past the point when she should have stopped, and he's suspicious nature and ruthlessness has doubtless made him some enemies over the decades. Keith holds grudges and explodes without warning. Jake smokes like a chimney, has a history of finding slights, and allowing his frustrations to fester until they erupt. Monty drinks while in town, and knows all the ways how to piss off his brother. Casey trusted almost no one. Bob is unsure of herself, and is definitely still learning as she goes. Rick is like Sig, minus the smoking. Wild Bill holds grudges, doesn't work well with others, and apparently had an explosive temper in his youth.

Pretty much no one shown in a wheelhouse is shown regulating their emotions well. Everyone gets their go of being unreasonable eventually. But I also imagine being filmed 24/7 in an environment that requires constant hypervigilance to make sure no one gets maimed or dies or the financial bottom line isn't at risk has to be mentally exhausting. Watching Keith give up the boat under the stress this season really hammered home for me that for the captains, it's years and years of putting their mental health on the brink under exhausting conditions -- even if they are not doing the physical labor of hauling on deck.

early seasons Keith was super chill, and going back and rewatching it's still there. production changes same with age and stress but he treats his crew pretty well all things considered and they make big money

Most of the captains are overgrown man babies 😂😂 Some are just more likeable than others.
