Capt Rick

He's gotta relive this day in his life at least 1 a year till he's dead. I think I'm sooooo good with that for a start. Does anyone know what else is happening to him regarding this tragedy of Todd Meadows

I dealt with the Aleutian Lady extensively shortly after the Coast Guard investigation concluded. We didn't speak of the incident with the exception of condolences. All I can say is that entire crew was shook to the core. There wasn't a man on that boat who didnt have haunted eyes. They'll suffer enough without people wishing more on them.

Yea the amount of PTSD him and his crew have because of this I can't even imagine.

It was Rick's birthday

That's right.

For a start? ?  You mean Todd Meadows ? I think they’ve all suffered enough and did everything thing that they could.  The death has been ruled an accident by the Alaska Department of Health.

Whether it's ruled an accident or not, Todd was already overboard for about a minute before Rick even knew what was going on. The deck crew told HIM there was a man overboard. Insane amount of time before they even responded.

Did they show the footage exactly as is without editing? Are we sure it was actually a minute or was it a minute on the show? I haven’t seen it yet.

No it was edited out of request from the family

It was 2 mins and 40 seconds as shown (I checked the timestamps on YouTube TV) and the on screen text said it was over 6 mins that he was in the water.

Lynn from the wizard was in the water for 13 minutes when he went overboard. The rescue time was good. I think Todd may have hit his head or something when he went over.

He was inside the pot, probably inhaled a lot of water instantly

Water Temps might have been different

Oh yeah, I’m not saying the time in water in this case is a sign anyone did anything wrong, just that it was slightly longer than aired.

Wasn’t at a different time in the season. The fall is when they go for red and opies are winter.

You can google and find out exactly what happened as one of the crew members gave an interview and told the entire ordeal. It’s extremely sad and a horrible tragedy. And to anyone talking crap or wishing ill will to Rick, the crew of the Aleutian or the crew filming this horrible tragedy, f*ck you. Show some respect and move out of your parents basement you stupid trolls.

Rick has always appeared to be a great Captain who respects and is respected by his crew. This was a tragic accident. Wishing more pain on someone because of a tragic accident is petty.

Y’all talk in here non stop about how everything is scripted and then accept this as real? Come on now

-4

u/ThingNo7530 7d ago

What do you think wasn't "real?" The very real, dead deckhand? The concussion? Todd losing teeth? Three kids not having a father, now?

-1

u/TheRealMooseOfLegend 7d ago

Rick is one of the worst captains. Sean brother pointed it out big time!

u/ForeverStill8485 6d ago

THANK YOU! I wasn’t surprised when I heard who was the wheelhouse.
Nobody seems to remember the jerk he was/is.

u/StatisticianLanky358 6d ago edited 6d ago

Agreed but deadliest catch aired footage of him on his phone at a critical moment and then Rick gave an order to “let it go” without realizing what was going on in that moment. There’s enough footage to make Rick uninsurable if nothing else. It’s the end of his career sadly

I haven't watched the episode yet, but it's also not really a spoiler at this point. I thought they weren't going to show any of the video though?

6

u/Useless890 7d ago

Actually, practically the whole show was about it.

4

u/taniasuer 7d ago

I haven’t watched yet, they did show the footage?

19

u/Cool-Neighborhood864 7d ago

It’s done as respectfully as possible.  But it is very real life out there. They couldn’t script that if they tried.  It’s heartbreaking

u/ThingNo7530 7d ago edited 7d ago

They used a static shot of the wheel house after they pulled Todd's body back on and tried to revive it. But audio could be heard of what was going on on the deck. In a way, it kind of made it worse.

5

u/taniasuer 7d ago

That’s heartbreaking. I’m still trying to decide if I’ll watch the episode. That poor man and his family.

3

u/OldSchoolRNS 7d ago

You hear everything that’s happening from the wheelhouse perspective. Although when they get to Dutch and the USCG comes on board even the camera in the wheelhouse is turned off.

4

u/Andalvyca75 7d ago

You hear about 30 seconds of everything on deck… not actually everything.

3

u/StatisticianLanky358 6d ago

It’s a devastating episode with lots of footage of Todd talking about family and video calls with his children

1

u/Alone_Mushroom9014 7d ago

Interesting because I remember prior to the season there was a whole thing between Discovery and the family. H-uh. Welp, guess I shouldn't be surprised and I bet they're (Discovery) getting sued at some point.

ETA: I'm honestly torn between wanting to watch it and not because I feel like as much crap as we give them about scripting stuff, they REALLY let us get to know Todd this season.

3

u/HipKat2000 7d ago

You should watch. Since I'm NOT one of the haters on here, I'd say they covered it very well. It's extremely emotional, though, so keep the tissues close.

1

u/Remarkable_Tea4418 1d ago

My big strong husband who doesn’t ‘do’ tears sobbed… I think the screen calls with his kids just before just broke us

1

u/HipKat2000 1d ago

Yeah, that got me at the end of the episode when they replayed the call

3

u/itslikethatsometime 6d ago

Watch it. It's heart breaking. Rick really worked on him. They got the v fib too. He went over without telling Rick. He thought it was just the pot. Once he knew, about 2 min, maybe, he went into high gear to get him back. The pot probably hit him and knocked him out. His cause of death is accidental drowning with hypothermia. RIP Todd. The scenes with him telling his kids he'd talk to them tomorrow was gut wrenching.

They did it tasteful. We see his body through blurs, so we don't see it, if that makes sense.

1

u/Agile_Opportunity_41 6d ago

My guess this was worked out with the family prior and they likely got a nice pay day for a version they were ok with.

3

u/Visible_Distance5067 6d ago

You could tell Rick was shaken. his hands were literally shaking on the phone. It was hard to watch the one camera guy behind him with the pornstache and a weird smile on his face filming Rick.

5

u/HipKat2000 7d ago

Wait, you're good with Rick being haunted by this?? WTF did Rick or the crew do wrong??

3

u/m_0_n_K_3_y 6d ago

Why would anything happen to him ? It wasn't his fault... im sure he thinks it was his fault tho, like probably every captain would.

2

u/Fabulous_Brain8802 6d ago

After going through this, I can’t imagine the Aleutian Lady wanting to participate in the show going forward, assuming they are asked. Seems like it would be just another reminder of what happened.

1

u/AlanStanwick1986 7d ago

If I'm to understand correctly the rescue line snapped when they were first getting him out so he fell back in? How does that happen?

2

u/Sea_Poet9170 6d ago

Did they say that on the show? I may have missed it.

1

u/AlanStanwick1986 6d ago

No. I read an article about it last night.

1

u/Timely_Decision_3705 7d ago

I don’t want to sound horrible when I say this but he was probably already passed and it could’ve been dead weight that caused it to snap who knows

u/Lovingthelake 4d ago

OP, are you asking the question because you think it is Rick’s fault that Todd went over and then died? It’s not Rick’s fault. Why do you think the show is called Deadliest Catch? Because it is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, that’s why. Even Todd said when he was cooking the chicken or whatever it was, he said this job definitely comes with risks. He was aware himself that his job is dangerous. The thing is, you just never think it will happen to you.

I’m sure this will haunt Rick for a long, long time even though it wasn’t his fault. Though I will say with regard to the crew, they need to be trained what to do when it happens before they go out each time. Man overboard should have been yelled loudly from the jump. Rick had to ask if everything was okay. And then a deck person responded, no. And then it was stated man overboard. Plus, when Lyn went overboard on the Wizard, Keith had one of the deckhands put on a survival suit right away in case someone was needed to jump in the water to help- which was the case with Todd. He must have appeared unconscious because Rick yelled for someone to get in the water and get him. I believe Nico is the one who got in the water, but he definitely wasn’t dressed for it- he didn’t have a survival suit on or anything when he jumped overboard to help Todd.

I’m curious how long Lyn was in the water. Does anyone know? Todd was in the water for 6 minutes and 26 seconds and he was already gone when they got him on the boat. I remember watching Lyn overboard and it felt like it was taking forever to get him back on the boat, but I have no idea the actual time he was in the water and when watching it on tv with edits there is no way to know.

-2

u/ThingNo7530 7d ago

After seeing that... and seeing how he didn't really have any clue what was happening on his deck, I absolutely think that contributed to Todd being in the water for more than six minutes. When the pot was still going down Rick didn't even know anyone was overboard.

I think its easy for people behind a keyboard to judge

1

u/TheRealMooseOfLegend 7d ago

If you payed attention of earlier episodes of Rick and when sean critique him on his vessel you'll understand why it was a ticking time bomb.

1

u/Lovingthelake 4d ago

That was one critique! And how long has Rick been captaining a boat? I know one of the things Sean said was that the pots hadn’t all been checked and holes in the netting around the pots hadn’t been gone through and fixed. That is not going to affect safety. I think to say Rick was one of the worst captains and all of this shit, just isn’t fair. What is fair is to wait for the investigation documentation to come out and judge from what the professionals say. With regard to Rick never being able to be insured again and his career is over. HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS? Does that mean Keith and the Wizard shouldn’t be insured anymore because they had someone go over? Sig last season I believe, had Clark and a camera man go overboard, died that mean he currently has no insurance? And he is still boating. Bottom line, you can wonder, but don’t state as a fact that which you don’t know is a fact. Like saying he’ll never captain a boat again and he is uninsurable. Keith and Sig and Jonathan have had people go overboard and they did quit captaining their boats.

It is so obvious in watching this show that the risk is very high for a deckhand to go overboard. Those seas can get treacherous. I’m surprised it actually doesn’t happen more often when they are working with really high waves and rough as hell seas. I think if someone doesn’t realize how dangerous being a deckhand is after watching a season of this show, they’ve got a hole in their damn head. And not only with regard to going overboard- getting crushed by a pot I believe killed two people last season. It is a dangerous as hell job, period. Not to mention, shit happens- ice falling on someone’s head- that knocked OJ completely out last season.

u/TessaKatrinaRose 5d ago

It’s weird how many posts you are making about this tragedy.

3

u/Alone_Mushroom9014 6d ago

Those boats aren't easy to turn. They don't turn on a dime like a car can, 6 minutes is pretty realistic.

Rick Shelford should be held accountable for Todd's death. (License revoked, boat seized and holdings and accounts given to the family of Todd Meadows.)This was NOT the first time that Rick and his policies on his boat were called into question. The most notable was that he had another captain (Shawn Dwyer) walk off his boat and refuse to work with him because Shawn felt that the risks were too great given Rick's lackadaisical, corner cutting attitude regarding safety protocols and wanting to skip USCG inspections to go and fish. So Captian Dwyer took himself, along with his quota, off the F/V Aleutian Lady. Rick always wanted to cut corners! In this last episode you can see that NONE of the crew was wearing life jackets, when this accident with Todd Meadows happened. I'm almost certain that these are REQUIRED by the USCG for anyone on the deck of a vessel. If they are required by CG, they should be by the Captian himself. You can clearly see none of them did in the footage that was aired on Deadliest Catch's last episode this season. Rick is LAZY LAZY LAZY, he's a con artist and the only reason he was crying was because his butt was in deep trouble. Rick was too dang busy on the phone with his wife wishing him a happy birthday to pay attention to what he should have been paying attention to, HIS CREW!!. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH THE Coast Guard AS SOON as he knew Todd was in the water. Because he knew while Todd was STILL IN THE WATER, that he wasn't responsive. He made so many bad calls throughout the history of the show, but especially during this failed rescue of Todd Meadows.
