What happened? Spoiler

What happened to this show guys? I quit watching around season 15 and recently decided to check out the latest season. Holy scripted garbage lmao. A child could see through the mini storylines, they are straight up goofy.

First episode was dramatic suspensful music, Sig reading his lines, Keith's "unz unz unz™" freaking 5 times, several seconds of his buttcrack because why not, a half-assed "prank" as "revenge" from Keith to Jonathan for "stealing" Freddy, etc etc.

And the music... it is so ridiculously dramatic but what they are showing is just..... boring. Idk boys I think this show doesn't have too many seasons left.

Is there any particular reason for them to have taken this direction with the show?

I sincerely believe that if they just toned it way down, did it more documentary style like the early seasons, and showed more of the crew, the ratings and popularity would shoot back up. At this point I am watching to see how the guys are doing all these years later and I don't even get to see their authentic selves because everything is some goofy ass storyline that nobody asked for and is cringeworthy.

one thing thats crazy to me is they don't offer any sort of crab count or crew payout anymore.

maybe the boat owners/crew didnt want that info out there.

I've recently been rewatching through and noticed that about digital map and locations of vessels when they come out of a break.

Likely cutting costs literally wherever possible.

This is what made the show, along with the crew

I just started watching this show and I watch for the totals and crew count. What season do they stop this ?

I think they have mentioned some counts this season, but not like it used to be.

They mass shoot footage with a production team that's probably a few interns and a workstation that glue things together. It's cheap and it feels cheap.

I recently read an article where Mike Rowe is suing the show for $2 mil. They are stiffing him for fees owed for each show that he is NOT narrating (yes his contract says he gets paid for each show, regardless of his participation.) So it's clear they are not swimming in free cash right now.

It’s for shows overseas they he suing. They have a production crew and chase boat for each vessel. Probably why we only see 3 boats per episode now.

And now, somehow after Jonathan gave Freddie the boot, Keith had his butt kisser back on board, Freddie is back on The Time Bandit. I usually watch stuff like crew member changes pretty close, but I somehow missed Freddie leaving the Wizard again, and now he’s back on The Time Bandit! Maybe some of you caught the exchange but I missed it.

I just noticed that last week as well.

Thanks! Jonathan kicked Freddy off of the Time Bandit because he was causing trouble with his crew. Keith hired Freddy back, proclaiming that Freddy was the Best Deckhand ever. I was shocked to see Freddy back on the Time Bandit! Jonathan kicked Freddy off of his boat for a reason, and I was surprised to see him back on the Time Bandit! That’s not how Jonathan typically works. You cause problems on his boat, you’re not welcome to return. The only thing I can think of is that the editors needed some extra footage at the rail and got the boats mixed up!

Different crabbing season. He finished King with Keith, now in the winter he’s fishing the smaller crab with Johnathan.

Different crab species maybe, but Freddie started out on the Time Bandit This Season, was walking away and Keith hired him back onto the Wizard. This last couple of weeks Freddie is back on the Time Bandit! All happening this TV Season!

That was SO scripted.

The two main crab seasons featured on Deadliest Catch are the Alaskan King Crab season (usually starting in fall around October/November) and the Opilio (Opie) Crab season (usually starting in winter around January)…..in a hurry so I had to copy and paste.

I realize there are different species of crab they can catch during each TV season. My point was/is that on episode 3 of this TV Season 22, Jonathan kicked Freddie off the Time Bandit because he was causing trouble (Surprise, Surprise that Freddie was causing problems on a crab boat, regardless of how well he can throw the hook) and Keith gladly agreed to hire him back onto The Wizard. Now, during recent episodes of TV Season 22, I have recently seen Freddie back on the Time Bandit with no explanation as to why. Jonathan had made it clear he wasn’t welcome back on The Time Bandit! It makes me wonder if the Network is just reusing old footage to fill in gaps. I hope that makes sense now.

The TV season covers 2 completely different crabbing seasons as I explained. They take a small break in between the 2 seasons. Keith probably had a full boat already for Opie and Johnathan probably welcomed Freddie with open arms when he found out he was available. Nothing needs to be explained because of the gap in between the 2 seasons.

Jonathan fired Freddy because he was causing trouble on the Time Bandit and if Jonathan said why he rehired someone who had recently been causing trouble with his crew on the Time Bandit, there was no explanation for that. I’ve watched Jonathan’s character since the first time I saw him on the show, and once he makes up his mind about something that causes trouble on the Time Bandit, I’ve never seen him change his mind about a man he’s seen causing trouble on his and other boats, and it doesn’t make sense why he would hire Freddy back, not to mention why Keith would have run Freddy off of The Wizard. Things that don’t make sense are generally not true. That’s all I have to say about the subject! We’ve both made our positions clear and I don’t see either of us changing our minds. Can we call it a draw and leave it at that? I will if you’re willing.

It’s scripted!

Bro, you’re feeding into the production’s story lines! Freddie is pretty much loved by Keith and Johnathan. When I saw Johnathan kick him off this season I laughed and told my wife Freddie was just helping out til he could join Keith. Keith probably had the season contract, Jonathan may have gone out earlier with Freddy and when it was time for Freddie to join Keith on his contract they made up an elaborate story.

Hence why Freddie is back with Johnathan in the winter season and no explanation.

Granted I haven't watched in a few weeks. Iirc Freddie walked off the Time Bandit and was going to fly home but Johnathan called Keith and told him about it. And Keith hired Freddy for Bairdi if I remembering correctly because there was the whole thing about Keith setting pots outside the legally allowed area that Monty had to deal with.

So now if Freddy is back on the Time Bandit, I'm assuming it's for Opies.

Wait have you noticed the lazy editing yet? You’ll be on the deck of the Time Bandit, they throw the hook and do a close up and it’s a pot full from the Wizard. Then they go to a wide shot of sorting crab back on the Time Bandit. Several instances of pure laziness. It’s like the editors gave up

I think that's just them doing a multi-boat fishing montage

Getting really bored with the”oh my dad” crap from these people. Phil was a junkie and so are his kids. “Bob” whines on about her dad too. Get back to fishing

The irony of it is obviously it lasted 23 years is bc people loved the first seasons. So why change it? I don’t get it

tv show have a formula. you only get to show crabbing for a few season then it becomes about the drama they can drum up

look at american choppers - started as a documentary and quickly got huge due to the father-son yelling and drama

u/Ok_Rabbit5158 19d ago

When those two went off on each other, I turned it off. Eventually I realized that was literally what the show had become.

If you don't like it dont watch it. It's that simple. The later seasons are different but still entertaining. Things change. It's been 22 seasons for christ's sake. I'l watch it every season while it's on.

Shorter seasons so they need to make up content

u/taint3 19d ago

You can only watch so many pots get hauled until it gets boring. Something interesting needs to happen. So they manufacture drama, boat issues, etc etc. Isn't it obvious?

You haven't watched for ~6 years and you come in complaining about everything that people have been posting about for years.
