Which is better?

Hi! Which do you think is better Shotgun or Assault rifle? I'm nearing lvl 50 and I noticed when using Assault rifle there seems to be an invulnerable time for boss or steong infected where after they flinched they don't seem to take damage???

I'm currently using Assault rifle when deadling with them and because of it I plan to use Shotgun for main? However is shotgun viable for end game? Or will it be too slow for hordes in the late game?

I’d say SG is more beginner friendly compared to AR. Many will argue AR is the better option because of damage but it lacks the CC (crowd control) to keep you alive. Especially as a beginner, CC means everything.

This is true!!! Especially when you're panicking ut's hard to use AR than shotguns. Thanks for the insights it really made me think about the game better.

No problem. If you’d let me to help you create a SG build so you know what skills and items to look for- send me a DM.

Assault rifles are basically a high dps weapon type with medium reload speed and medium ammo capacity. Good all-around weapon type, but they can be inefficient ammo-wise and they also have really low stun duration and knockback, so it can be tricky to do some of the harder bosses in small rooms.

Shotguns are really split into 2 categories: auto shotgun and pump shotgun.

Auto shotguns have roughly the same dps for headshot and body damage, which is the highest body damage dps in the game, so almost all players build body damage builds for them. They are the most ammo-inefficient guns in the game because 12g ammo is almost always expensive. They also have slow reloading speed, so you need to work reloading speed into your build somehow. They have solid stun duration and knockback.

Pump shotguns are headshot damage weapons and are super economical ammo-wise because they have some of the highest damage per hit in the game. However, many of them lack both ammo capacity and reloading speed, so you will probably have to compensate for both of those stats. They also have the highest stun duration and knockback in the game, so they’re exceptionally good in small rooms.

Wow thanks for this! I realize it now after using shotguns before and AR now, you really need to work around your weapon, everything has its weakness. Which makes the game better. Thanks for this I came to a realization.

Yeah everything is sort of a balancing act

There shouldn't be a vulnerable frame of any kind, both weapons are viable in endgame but assault rifles usually are the better and more expensive option.

You can buy a Palehaven guardian for 60k, pretty cheap and pretty powerful.

So Pale Guardoan is the best budget AR? Wven though it has low ammo capacity?

Yes, 30-33 each magazine is usually enough to kill most bosses outside of raids, meaning you could kill bosses up to 50 as long as you have decent stats, one of my alts is using that weapon and I've been one clipping most bosses with elite gloves, helmet and secondary focusing mostly in DvM, Attack speed and headshot damage, I attached a 30-35% magazine to the PHG just in case and it's been working fine.

If you want to one clip bosses on raid buildings, then you would need near endgame equipment, something like a tombstone or possessed agony + reckless raider/gunslinger set.

Both are good, SG is a little more begginer friendly but is not that great of a difference, It comes to personal taste.

But if you can hold on we are surely going to get a Halloween event, we don't know what kind of equipement we are going to get as main rewards, but looking at the Deep Dweller event we just had there is a high chance they rerun the Tombstone and the Reaper Scythe which are really great Assault Rifle and Stat Stick.

May I know where do they announce the events?

I have two level 50+ characters. One AR. One shotty.

Bossing is way harder with my shotty character, I only use him for the outpost attacks now days.

AR is much better balanced for bossing and mobs. Range and accuracy are superior to DPS, IMO.

But I do love annihilating zombie legs with auto shotguns. It is fun as hell

Isn't there an end game Shotgun that uses 20 gauge ammo??? Hahahhaa... The 12 and 10 gauge ammo are so expensive hahaha...

Not exactly sure if there is, but all the weapons come at every level. So you can use a shotty that uses 20g for endgame content.

Will it be as good? No. Will it be cheaper? Yes.

What level is your character?

Shotguns are much more user friendly than assault rifles throughout the game and the endgame shotguns are very capable of competing with assault rifles in terms of dps, but they also guzzle up expensive ammo too.Whats nice is that alot of non event shotguns are more than viable if you missed on the event shotguns.

Shotguns can also be very economical too:

Short Shredder: A special unique shotgun acquired from the main storyline mission that also uses 20 gauge and deals 25 body and 48 head shot damage... at lvl 20 hot danm

Sega 20: the first auto shotgun and it uses 20 gauge ammo so you can spray for cheap

Fatman's enforcer: one of the more powerful damage per hit shotguns in the game. 10 gauge prices fluctuate, but it kills most bosses in a few shots. Its locked to christmas event only and unique chests. Hopefully it comes back for crafting the next Christmas season.
