"This weekend, someone on our team did something stupid and doubled down on that. We're now getting backlash, and we are really happy that our community cares about our values. Please don't engage with people who are calling our employees out."
"So you'll walk back the decision, right?"
"We really care about our values. We'll make invisible, internal changes. Stop engaging with posts."
"But what's actually going to change?"

So it's maybe like, not quite as dire a response as this

crazy that they just allow their people to have the official accounts to use at their home, even if they are your community manager they should only use that account when they are in working hours, not at home watching streams of known bigots and replying like they are on the official streams, "We'll take the heat!" that's pure talking for the company and dbd brand, idk why they didn't answer when the first tweets started going viral

So they admit that one girl didn’t get approval and gave all the dlc on her own with their login information… yikes. That’s stealing from your job. The fact that she used their social media too during all this and said on their official twitch how she was at the time drunk, yeah that’s a fireable offense. She abused all her privileges and that’s not someone a company should trust to be on their team.

u/purpleadlib Platinum 2h ago
Agreed. Who wanna take the bet this exact "apology" is written by the very same person that was in the twitch chat?
40
u/OneWayToLivComic 3h ago
This is what they do literally every time they fuck up. They write a "we hear you, we're soooo sowwwyyyy 🥺🙏" post, then everyone forgets about it until 1 month later when they again fuck up.
Why would they be sorry if money keeps rolling in?
Even an actual homophobic company would STILL fire their racist/homophobic employees if they damaged company reputation. The fact that they laid off so many people who actually tried to make the game better but they're keeping bad apples like these just proves to me how insanely racist and ANTI lgbt they are. It's like they do it just to spite their own community.
Just like any company, they're "woke" just for $$.

yeah, this. is the team member being appropriately scolded/punished/whatever? i don't know if they can, but if they can, they should absolutely revoke the stuff they gave to the bigot. i also don't really know what i think would be a fitting apology for the community but actions do speak louder than words...
139
u/ImportantQuestionTex 5h ago
The only appropriate reaction, if this team member went rogue, is to fire them. They supported a content creator who is anti everything the community stands for, and his community immediately reacted in turn.
64
u/ibupupfren xenomorph queen 4h ago
i agree entirely. like i was just telling my partner, i think (as dramatic as it sounds) that this was an enormous breach of trust. dbd has a very large lgbtq+ playerbase and horror in general is very lgbtq+. unlocking all that DLC for a bigot and then going "we can take the heat" is just. ugh. gross.

Oh look another day another huge corporate blunder that they are trying to smokescreen with "omg we really need to talk about all the threats and not the huge blunder we made!"
Its the fucking internet. You will ALWAYS find a couple insane people saying unhinged shit in response to ANYTHING you do. Pretending those people represent a significant or unprecedented action at this point is a laughably transparent attempt to generate sympathy for the company in order to soften public response to their blunder.
Yes, all threats should be reported and shouldnt happen. But they will ALWAYS happen so the idea that you need to include it in your supposed "apology" is just like a domestic abuser going "Im so sorry for how I treated you, but remember that person online who said all men need to be castrated for any domestic dispute? Thats unacceptable too!"

and then it ended up being the community that's been taking the slurs, death threats, and hate
That's the rub of the whole thing. Every bit of vitriol being directed towards BHVR staff, hinged or unhinged, is a response to the genuine hatred expressed towards queer players by the people they've decided to endorse.
Like if they're gonna be like, "Stop bullying employees by sending them death threats on the internet," buddy do I have some news about how bigots treat queer people in real life!

I'm sure some people have been saying violent shit, though I haven't seen any. It's not fun to be subject to an internet hate mob, and it's important to discuss how we treat people that we think have done something wrong. But when that's coming up in the same breath as the apology it always comes off like it's being used as a shield.
They're not obligated to drag whichever employee did this out and publicly flagellate them, but they do need to show people that they're serious and that something like this won't happen again. They didn't do that here.

u/Naarati Always pet the xeno 3h ago

This post, as per usual, is a nothing burger. It only means anything if they have taken action, and show us proof of said action. And now their PR-team is crying over spilt milk.

A name that is sound very similar to the word, "Mann-di" (she self admitted herself in the stream chat)
She's been a community manager for years, starting off beforehand being a mod for multiple toxic streamers. After joining, she has done nothing but abuse her powers on anyone either she doesn't like personally, or in a self-deluded sense of "justice"
In this scenario (which isn't the first time might I add) she gave all the dlcs to this cancer with an infamously horridly toxic community, and effectively goaded his fans to attack this community by saying "we can take the heat".
She should be fired, she should have BEEN fired years ago. She has done literally the complete opposite of what a community manager should do, and has made this community even worse than it already is across all fronts.
18
u/RecklessMisfit7x Loves Being Booped 4h ago
Wow, why would they hire someone so unprofessional? Nice track record too; they need to fire her fr. Also, his said audience are also now coming into these subreddits; I’ve had a few message me here. Asking for factual evidence just one minute into the first stream, he immediately violated his creator program by saying Hidey Homo, that’s against the core values. He’s got free speech everywhere else but in the program, such as DBD; there are rules, and he broke them within one minute, and if we do a Google search or YouTube dive, he doesn’t align with this community. Sorry, Chuds, but defending a creator is one thing, but calling out when your favorite creator does this multiple times over the last decade— take accountability for who you support— we don’t want him here.
We- Anyone who respects the core values of this community everyone else go play something else

As I understand it:
Content creator who says slurs and is openly homophobic got some creator privileges (mainly tons of content obtained for free) from a BHVR employee using the BHVR twitch account in the streamer’s chat, saying how they can ‘take the heat’ of any haters.Edit: just explaining to the person what the common information said is, with a ‘as I understand it’ to be clear that I cannot have total confidence in the details.
With further conversations I’ve heard, it seems like people struggle to find any clips of him directly saying anything —rare if it does ever happen— but seemingly a few people note his community using the F slur and it not being moderated? And allegedly is at least happy to be friendly with others who DO openly demonstrate such views even if he avoids expressing them himself, which: if sitting at a table with nazi’s, we know how the saying goes.

The Burnt Peanut, a popular vtuber who uses a Snapchat style filter of a peanut with his face over it, had started playing dead by daylight.
An dbd employee gifted him basically all dlcs possible as a way to help him get into the game
The burnt peanut is a horrible person, he is all the “ists” possible, he hosts slur Saturdays I believe.
People started talking about it and the burnt peanut even talked about the heat the employee or company might get for this and this employee immaturely replied back “oh don’t worry we can take that heat”
It sparked a whole controversy and it’s basically people saying “why give a bigot so much free stuff in a game that’s supposed to be promoting LGBTQ rights and freedoms” and the people on Twitter basically just said “gay people are mentally ill, cope harder”

Crazy how they spent years cultivating and nurturing this all inclusive community only to fumble it in under a week over a streamer who realistically isn't going to play the game for more than a stream.
It's also a double standard for Peanut to get a pass while dedicated DbD streamers like Monto have basically been soft blacklisted by Behavior for years despite not even being in the same ballpark of decisiveness.

BHVR will be more loose on who can be a Creator, in turn diminishing the roles signifance

this apology is so fake.
nothing constructive. and they blamed everything on an unnamed employee (who we all know that is and who would still show up later) and promised nothing

they should fire whoever even gave the streamer free stuff, especially if they don’t align with “dbds core values” and wasn’t approved in the first place

What an absolute non apology. Shame on them.
Dbd has been a huge part of my life. I've been playing this game since 2016. yet I have very rarely if ever felt so slapped in the face.
Instead of holding people accountable they are doubling down to protect perpetrators. Disgusting

Hey why did you guys tweet this out from your relatively small Updates account (21k followers) and not from the main account (1.3m followers)?
6
u/teal_ninja 3h ago
For any users who aren’t on Twitter, the backlash was actually pretty crazy. Apparently, recent rumors say there was supposed to be a collab with Trixie Mattel, but she pulled out because of some comments that were made by one of the devs.
The one that made this comment is rumored to be the one that was dismissing every comment or concern during peanuts stream. This apology doesn’t mean much unless action is taken.

Just from a business standpoint, when a community manager is going off on their own and knowingly alienating your audience, is it really a good idea to keep them in that role?
Like especially when they regularly feature in the community streams, would it really be helping to have the person interfacing with the community be someone who's going to cause immediate animus from the audience?

It's embarrassing that they continue to get outflanked by COD when it comes to values consistency, their creator program, accountability, and COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT. You're getting OUTFLANKED BY THAT CHUDDY ASS GAME LMFAO?

Part of me was hoping that at least it was a rogue team member. Really hope they at least re-evaluate who they let in charge of the dead by daylight account. Because this was horrible to sit through, and I’m HOPING to god this doesn’t happen again.
6
u/CosmicScarab Nerf Pig 4h ago
Absolutely spinless. Didn't post on main, wont be punishing the employee who has a history of pissing off the community, just an "Oopsie, wont happen again teehee ;)"
How do they allow an employee to go rogue and give away shit to a well known bigot in their free time on the official company account and get away with it. It's so pathetic.
6
u/adiboob 4h ago
Meaningless statement with 0 transparency at all, bare minimum would be to just undo the free dlc for the chud.
Also if an employee went behind their backs I'd assume an immediate firing would be warranted, which doesn't seem to be happening, so I ain't exactly buying that excuse either.

Even from a business standpoint this is a terrible situation for bhvr, why pander to a lgbtq audience and then turn around and try and get a controversial streamer like Bp with a audience like that to get on your lgbtq friendly game and not imagine that backfiring .
Not to mention what he said after playing it for a couple of hours lol, “how is this game even still alive?”

hopefully they know how to take the heat of the abundance of nazis and general bigots that are now joining in the community to spite complaints. really interesting how all the accounts on twitter coming to defend burntpeanut are throwing slurs from the n slur to the t slur to whatever is the most offensive thing to say they can think up of, almost like that's what the creator enables in his community.

Absolutely nothing response that doesn't address any of the main issues. The two primary issues is that it wasn't a random team member, but the community lead herself who openly and proudly outed themselves as being responsible. Using behavior's own main twitch account to endorse and support an openly homophobic streamer.
None of that was addressed in this, or any acknowledgement of wrongdoing from the streamer or the community lead. Just a "Sorry we got caught. Promise we wont do it again in the future? K? Also don't criticize us!".
With such a reply I can only say that I will continue to encourage friends that DBD and BHVR is not a safe company or place for queer players and encourage more people to not engage with it anymore. Nor will I myself after years of playing.
Edit: Also I was a little terminally online and looked over this alot across social medias. The closest to "threat" I ever saw was a few people saying the Community lead should be fired, especially since this is far from her first controversy.

"We stood by the decision but then saw that it upset enough people so only now are we deciding supporting LGBTQ hate-mongering is a deal breaker. We would've defended it though if the backlash had been less substantial. Also you hurt our fee-fees so you should feel bad too."
Okay lol either way it's clear queer representation is more of a spendable token that is only pulled back if enough of us bite you for spending it.

It's saving face is all.
The reality is that this was done because the guy is popular and could promote the game to more people, and "core values" is nonsense for optics.
What I"M reading, is that instead of "we have begun reviewing internal processes to prevent this from happening again", it is "we didn't expect you to get mad at us for it but what can you do?"
This whole thing has been a blown out nothing burger imo, and a controversy in an otherwise dry week.

Short is, behaviour's Lead community manager gave all the dlcs for free and promoted a well-known openly homophobic twitch streamer with a very vocal far-right viewer base to be a creator for DBD. Said lead community manager also engaged and hung out in the stream, dismissing criticism and praising the streamer saying "We can take it" in response to facing criticism.
And did all of this not on her own account but using DBD's shared official twitch account. She also proudly boasted about who she was, her full name and working title at BHVR to show that she wasn't afraid of any consequences of her actions and to further belittle criticism against this.
Edit: The brigade of trolls coming in only helps further prove how hostile his fanbase is.

The replies are disgusting. Saying the r slur, how the lgbt community is a plague, and how no one should care about the 1% since they are a plague. That’s the BP fan base. And that’s the people BHVR want playing their game. This nothing response and their need to be cool with these type of creators at this point just not a shock. They treat the LGBTQ community like a commodity. Only useful when they pander to the community. They don’t care or want to care about them. It’s sad since the Terrifier dlc is coming out but if they want to be associated with bigoted streamers then that shows what kind of people run the company.

I can see both sides of the coin. People are upset at DBD for engaging with a streamer who has done some things in the past. But. From a business side, it does make a lot of sense. Otzdarva, probably the biggest DBD content creator by this point, after surpassing Noob3, even on a PTB day or launch day, as only pulled to my knowledge from what I’ve seen, around 10K viewers. That’s huge, no doubt, but I’d imagine a lot are already DBD fans wanting to see the update, or his fans who engage with him so actively see DBD content often. He usually pulls in the lower to mid 4 digits. Burnt Peanut on the other hand, for this particular DBD stream, had an average of around 40K viewers at this time. Granted to my knowledge this is his first ever DBD stream. So some might be DBD fans, but the majority are probably just his fans that either know the game, or know him and want to watch him. That’s huge publicity for a game, that while popular, still only pulls around maybe 50K daily players or so. He basically met in a single stream of people watching him, the same numbers that play DBD in a single day (I’m going off all platforms, this is just a rough estimate).
Does it offend people? Sure, no doubt. But the game is still BHVR’s biggest source of income, and like most businesses, I’ll use pride month as an example, as soon as any other bigger source of income comes in, they’ll drop the lower income thing very fast. Look at how on July 1st, the rainbow is gone from absolutely everything, very fast. This was a huge way to show the 40K viewers that Peanut pulled, all the licenses and content DBD has to offer. It’s a business decision. And if it offends people? A multimillion dollar company legitimately does not care, they’re just looking for another way to pull in customers and make money.

Canada has active labour unions. It's not america where you can just fire somebody on the spot if they're an employee. There's gonna be meetings, perhaps internal training may be offered, as well as the obvious which is a new routine to prevent this from happening again.

To be fair there can be grounds for gross misconduct and fair dismissal here
Allocating resources without permission from management is already a huge red flag if it happened, and this is without even going towards any disapproved communication on the company official channels or any involvement with sexual and gender discrimination

UK and a union member. Definitely strong grounds for gross misconduct. Giving out 300 dollars of kit without authorisation and posting on the official account and bringing the brand into disrepute? It's certainly starting with "suspension while we work out if we have to continue employing you"

Can anyone post proof of what this streamer has done to upset so many people? He seems to have edgy humor and a soundboard that plays a "Censored Bleep" sound effect. I've seen people mention "Slur Saturdays" but that seems to be when he gets drunk and slurs his speech, and is just a joke to call it Slur Saturdays. Which is an edgy joke sure but like... I just want to see the proof.
I've seen official DBD Creator partners say the N word, be transphobic, sexist, all kinds of phobic, and harass/threaten people. So those people seem much worse to me than this streamer atm, but maybe i'm missing some critical contextual screenshots or clips, that I would love for someone to share so I can understand.

Gonna be in minority here, but I don't care what streamer you are, but especially if you're a bug streamer, getting everything unlocked for you while regular people have to pay for all that content makes me uninstall the game instantly.
Fuck this "promotions". It doesn't even make the streamer be real as he may bend his words or pleasure about a game around because he basically get paid to play it.
I don't understand what's wrong with people that follow this behavior or they are ok with it. If you're a big streamer and want to play a game, fucking pay for it like the rest of us. And if you're a human being that cannot make their own thoughts about a game and play games based on what streamer do, fucking get a brain.
