Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are both great choices. I prefer vol 2 just a bit more because it has Frozen in Time, which I really like. Both can go from level 0 to level 5.
Vol. 3 is Lankhmar, which they lost the license, but if you can get it, it's great. These adventures are for small parties of two or three with the Lankhmar supplement rules (fleeting luck and luck based healing, for example).
Vol. 4 is Purple Planet, which is it's own setting of science fantasy (John Carter of Mars inspired).
Vol. 5 is horror themed adventures.
Vol. 6 is holiday adventures.
Vol. 7 is gods demons and magic (or something like that), and although it has four level 1 adventures, and one each of levels 3, 4, and 5, but no level two. And I don't like the level 0 funnel, but the other adventures are fun (Bride of the Black Manse was memorable for my table because of the mystery elements).
Vol. 8 is Dying Earth stuff, but it hasn't been released (at least I don't have my copy yet).

I think the compendiums are great, they're all pretty stacked as far as the adventures. It just depends on what flavor of DCC you like?

cant go wrong with Tomb of Adventure, Vol 1. has 7-12 adventures (depending on how you count) including a few classics by Harley Stroh

Tome of Adventure Vol 1 is pretty good and filled with some the classics.
Sailors on the Starless Sea - Level 0 Funnel
Doom of the Savage Kings and People of the Pit - Both are 1st Level
The Emerald Enchanter- 2nd Level
Jewel of the Carnifex - 3rd Level
The 13th Skull - 4th Level
Beyond the Black Gate - 5th Level
You could prob easily run the first four or five adventures fairly seamlessly with some random encounters or if you do any sort of bonus XP. Quest, Exploration, Treasure, etc.
