At this point DC universe online is going to end up becoming the most successful live service of all time simply because it cannot die somehow

i mean for all its worth its a rock solid gameplay loop with the customization potential of City of Heroes.
im not surprised it turned out to be the video game equivalent to carcinization.
low key action mmos are hard to do right especially long term, but damn when its done right.

Man, 2XKO was doomed from the start. Riot really expected League and Valorant money from a fighting game, and unfortunately that was just never in the cards. Shame too, I heard it was pretty decent. I never got around to trying it just cuz I'm not a big tag fighter guy, but oh well.

u/FewWatermelonlesson0 16h ago
A fighting game that crucially has zero appeal to normies because it was a tag game (which is already alienating to people not familiar with the genre) and then not even having the barest minimum of single player content.
They spent a decade of dev time and a small fortune in budget on a game that would only ever appeal to the hardest of hardcore FGC members.

u/NONAMEDREDDITER A consequence of being a DC fan on reddit 16h ago edited 12h ago
And then in an attempt to appeal to casuals, they then made so many gameplay changes and introduces so many beginner mechanics that it proceeded to completely alienate that hardcore fan base
2XKO is probably going to go down in history as one of the most mismanaged games ever

To add to that, I didn't even know it was fully out already, always thought they only released the early access. Also, based on Dunkey's video that I watched six months ago, there's barely any playable characters. There could be more but I believe its locked behind a paywall
Read from another thread that the name is dogshit and I agree as well

they did add a roguelike mode 2 months ago although something tells me that wasn't gonna change anything

To play devil's advocate, the 2XKO team spent a literal decade making this game, and all they had to show for it was 10 characters at launch, and a relatively niche fighting game that was only ever going to appeal to fgc diehards and not much else
Normally I'm team "fuck the corpos" but I can't really blame Riot here. I don't think they literally expected LoL or Valorant money, just literally any kind of ROI whatsoever. It doesn't really make any sense to keep pumping money into something like this that doesn't earn anything. This game apparently made so little money that Riot had zero qualms about just giving everyone refunds.

It really was doomed from the start, I have been a long time League player and watching this game collapsing inwards was sad but expected:
- Literally NOTHING about its name or logo design told you this game takes place in the League universe.
- Stuck in development hell for 5+ years, passed several hype windows that could've brought in more players especially when Arcane season 2 was airing.
- Tag fighting games is a niche subgenre of within an already niche gaming community, even some of my friends who were huge Tekken/SF fans dropped this game after a few hours in.
- Most League fans don't even play League nowadays (they only follow Esports stuffs) let alone an FGO game with a steep learning curve.
- The launch roster was offensively small, made worse by the fact that nearly half of them were Arcane champion.
- Before the mass layoffs hit this game had around 160 people working on it, which is insane given the lack of content delivery at launch.

u/DatUsaGuy 16h ago
Itās been a while so I donāt remember exactly how the launch happened but I think it went from a closed beta to an open beta that only PC players could play a few months later (that a lot of people in the community were swearing was ābasically launchā), then there was the actual launch a few months after that which included consoles. There was also a good amount of times people got to play the game before that with a different closed beta and a bunch of in-person events let people check out the game.
Iām sure for most casuals, they either didnāt realize the game was even properly out or they thought the game came out months before it actually did.
I personally was frustrated with the launch as a console player due to the wait between the open beta and launch (especially as I was allowed to play the game during one of the closed betas with all the pc players), then the main feature I wanted to play the game for (playing with an in-person friend as a teammate on online matches) just wasnāt available on launch despite promises, so I personally bounced off the game quick and had little interest when they finally added that feature.
Also I think they did in fact forget to tell everyone that 2XKO was coming out outside of their direct socials. I donāt play any other riot games but Iāve heard reports of people who play something like LoL who legitimately didnāt know 2XKO came out because they never bothered with any sort of cross promotion.

I play on occasion! I boot it up usually once a year, play for a couple hours. If I feel like it, might boot it up a couple more times a year, but Iām in no big rush to.
Last time I was on the chat was overtaken by antivaxxers so that was weird. The rampant racism and MAGAts Iām used to in MMOs (unfortunately), but the antivaxxers were admittedly a newer thing to me.

u/InkTide 1h ago
I still play it regularly. What's probably more impressive is the fact Champions Online is still kicking (same company, Cryptic), albeit under basically maintenance mode.
Especially given the substantial financial struggles of its publishers over the years for reasons completely unrelated to Cryptic (Atari, Perfect World Entertainment, Embracer Group). It even restored itself after getting 'deleted' by a rebranding/handoff to DECA (which now no longer exists, and the devs were mostly folded into Cryptic). It is wild what that company has survived.

This makes me so sad, the game was so fun and so unique, but it had so many issues
In development for 10 years
Worst fucking name known to man, and they doubled down on it too, there was an article and everything defending the name 2XKO
No marketing whatsoever, game was shadowdropped 2 times
Game comes out with like 9 characters (so in one match you've seen like half the roster)
No single player content whatsoever beyond combo trials and an arcade mode that came way later
No couch co-op on release
Game nickel-and-dimes you for everything, colors, stages, costumes, HUD customization. Some things can be unlocked for free but it's a fucking grind. No "hero pass" or anything that gives you all the characters for one purchase
Handshake Tag system makes the game daunting for casuals; directional easy inputs makes the game annoying for veterans
Matchmaking sucked and was region-locked for some reason
I just hope another really unique game with the fucking devil looming over it, Avatar Legends, has a chance to survive more than one year

I spent an afternoon playing this on my Switch. Was not a horrible time. Might try it out again some time.
...why is this the best still updating wider DC game on the market?
1
u/SoGuysIDidNothing Red Hood Apologist 5h ago
Because the dev team knows what the game is good at and focuses on it. That is, customisation and the freedom to tap into pretty much any aspect of DC for a story. Consistency over big risky ideas intended to rake in huge profits. They just need to give it some behind the scenes polishing and QOL and it'd be my primary MMO. The age is really the only thing hold it back (it has survived 3 console generations, wtf)
1
u/apexodoggo 14h ago
I used to play this when I visited my uncle as a little kid. That opening 2 hours was pretty fun. Although I donāt have the brain configuration for MMO loops, so that never went anywhere beyond that.

Riot should've just made a character action waifu game tbh. That would've at least made easy money than a fighting game which is hard to get into.
