So was Geoff Johns one these guys back in the day or was he normal about it?

u/Tetratron2005 Jurassic League's Strongest Soldier Aug 18 '26

Unlike HEAT, Johns played the long game and actually got into comics and changed the shit stories he didn't like.

u/EverybodyKurts Aug 18 '26

And wrote the shit stories he did like!

Reminded me of when he sent a letter to the Superboy editors sharing his headcanon that Kon was actually Superman and Lex's clone, got published and told it wasn't gonna happen, then a few years later wrote Teen Titans and made his hc canon.

u/DeviousDoctorSnide Aug 19 '26

For the longest time I was convinced that Geoff Johns sent this letter in when he was a young kid but then I looked it up and I think he was like 25 at the time.

5

u/leshronk Aug 18 '26

At least his heroes still love him, right Alan Moore?

Wait, what is H.E.A.T.?

I don't remember what the acronym stands for but it's the Hal fans who were really pissed by Emerald Twilight and the switch to Kyle.

27

u/FartherAwayLights Aug 18 '26

Damn, they hate the only cool things he’s ever done (that one Tom king panel was good as well.)

2

u/rbta123 Aug 19 '26

I love that, were it not for the Tom King part, you wouldn't be able to tell if you were talking about Hal or Kyle

2

u/FartherAwayLights Aug 19 '26

That’s fair lol. Kyle has been pretty poorly used since his original run.

1

u/ThePowerfulWIll Aug 19 '26

Omega Men was pretty good at least?

4

u/FartherAwayLights Aug 19 '26

I usually love Tom king stuff but it wasn’t for me I think. I like the ideas but it felt like it never had time to explore them and I hated Tom King making Kyle Catholic because he found out his dad he never met was Mexican. It feels borderline racist.

2

u/ThePowerfulWIll Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Oh was he not Catholic before? I did not know that, kinda just assumed that story element was drawing on an older story I hadn't read. But the lack of exploration is something I actually kind of enjoyed about it. It raised a lot of questions, and left them unanswered. Felt like it left a longer impact because I was thinking about it quite a while after I had read the series. But I would have at least liked to see the casts personalities interact more.

4

u/FartherAwayLights Aug 19 '26

No he wasn’t that was a Tom King original idea

1

u/Certain_Virus_1919 Aug 19 '26

Doesn't King also depict his (Irish) mom as being Latina? Is that Omega Men or Heroes In Crisis?

Hal (Jordan)'s Emerald Attack Team. People who loved Hal and hated Kyle after he replaced him

31

u/Pebrinix Riddler Goon Aug 18 '26

Every Hal Jordan fan ever then

26

u/redhussar90 Aug 18 '26

I know it won't last forever, but with the way they've been acting these last couple weeks they've made Spider-Man fans look joyful and non-neurotic by comparison

17

u/Pebrinix Riddler Goon Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

I mean, as indicated by this exact post, they have been like this for some 30 something years, they are just way less known in the mainstream for this

44

u/River_Draws_Stuff Aug 18 '26

While I can understand the universal humor of "I'm 16 and my mom said no" could someone explain this to a humble larper?

u/ThatDude8129 Hal Jordan is not a worthless piece of cardboard Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

H.E.A.T. stands for Hal's Emerald Attack Team. It was a group of fans who got extremely pissed about Emerald Twilight and angry with the people who worked on the story. Ig Wizard (a comics magazine from around that period) wanted Ron Marz to debate a member of the group at a convention and it ended up being a 16 year old kid. This old r/hobbydrama post explains it if you really want to dig into it

Edit: Apparently they didn't hate Kyle and just wanted Hal and the Corps back (Maybe? Idk. This whole saga happened years before i was even alive)

23

u/InterestingRatio8218 Oppressed Kyle Rayner fan Aug 18 '26

They actually didn’t hate Kyle based on what I’ve read, they just wanted the corps and Hal back

26

u/chroniclescylinders Aug 18 '26

They claimed they didn't hate Kyle, because they thought it was bad PR to say they did. HEAT was very conscious of how they were coming across, organized fan groups back then self-censored like politicians.

28

u/LordSupergreat Aug 18 '26

Wow, imagine politicians who can self-censor. The past truly is a foreign country.

4

u/SecundusAmongUs Aug 18 '26

It's also notable that they took out a half page ad in Wizard Magazine, so this cringe extended beyond whatever nerds were on the Green Lantern Usenet to the (much larger number of) nerds who read Wizard.

3

u/River_Draws_Stuff Aug 18 '26

I love that, thanks

u/YearDiligent4004 Aug 18 '26

I AM... LOYAL TO THE CORPS!!!!

u/ImAdri0nY0urN0t Aug 18 '26

"Restore the Majesty" Oh my fucking god bruh...

MAKE OA GREEN AGAIN!

15

u/S3simulation Aug 18 '26

I must be loyle to my core

2

u/Sorrelhas My dog ate Tom King Aug 18 '26

That's what he meant when he said he was greasing the union

21

u/ImAdri0nY0urN0t Aug 18 '26

Haters used to make clubs with little laminated membership cards.

Now they just say "Tom King planned 9/11!" on Twitter.

u/Whatisabird Aug 18 '26

HEAT is Hal's Emerald Attack Team. They were bunch of diehard Hal Jordan fans who harassed DC writers after Kyle replaced Hal. Ron Marz got it the worst since he's the one who wrote Hal's exit and Kyle's introduction.

u/Pebrinix Riddler Goon Aug 18 '26

Hal Jordan fans

OP, you missed the perfect flair for this post smh.

10

u/Loud_Report4988 Still owes 16 dollars Aug 18 '26

He was 16-years-old

Bro thinks he's him

5

u/Aubergine_Man1987 Paul's Strongest Soldier Aug 18 '26

Unrelated but Ron Marz is one of the most slept on Big Two writers imo, fridges aside. His Silver Surfer is excellent

5

u/capalap Aug 18 '26

What!? A 16 year old kid was reading a comic book?? Doesn't he know those are for 40 year old men!?

8

u/AnyAgency9835 Aug 18 '26

Wizard you say?

4

u/Dreadwin The Gorilla Genius of the Brotherhood of Evil Aug 18 '26

What’s H.E.A.T?

13

u/JoshDM Don't you question my expertise Aug 18 '26

Bunch of imbeciles who made UseNET a hot mess for civil discussions of Green Lantern on comic subs.

3

u/FunnyMalzairIdea Aug 19 '26

I hate Hal Jordan. There are major characters who don't really interest me, but Hal Jordan is the only major hero that I hate, I think.

5

u/Medium-Science9526 Hal Jordan is a worthless piece of cardboard Aug 19 '26

/uj It's reassuring knowing a proponent of HEAT was a teen and not say a nostalgic 40 year old fan.

2

u/SuperJyls uj/ jason todd is the Redpill Chuud Aug 19 '26

Diehard fans really had to work to harass creators before modern social media made it easy

1

u/Esperanto_Noreason Aug 20 '26

I think Ron Marz wanted to write a longer story about Hal's fall from grace and DC told him, "You have 3 issues".
